What I like about this format is that you see every step he's doing. Most of my building techniques probably come from watching Josh build things but there are times I know it would help to see ALL the steps like this.

I really like this video. I think a lot of people don't realize that these videos are extra (being made on top of the existing ones and not replacing them). You can't even call this an episode because it wasn't meant to be one. I would love to see a video like this but with a quadcopter or David's main trycopter! Keep up the great work guys!

Personally, I like the new format. I get more from your detailed explanations. Have always thought of buying one of these and doing an aileron mod. Now I think I will for sure, and include the flaps too.

I really liked this format guys please keep it up. Question/Request.... With all of the people making video's with the help that you have given us, there is one area that I'm sure that most of us could use a few lessons on, and that is doing something with the raw video we get from flying and putting it into something that looks good vs just slapping a not on the back of the video and posting it. My request is a mini series about making a FPV video.

My friend has 3 of these cubs, all modified with ailerons, brushless motors and all painted with yellow rustoleum paint! One has a park480 motor, one has a park10, and the other a park 15. This thing is a trainer on steroids! Sometimes the wing likes to "U" so he put a CF spar in the wing.

Very nice build David. I did the exact same thing with my SC, but didn't have the same results. Although I've rebuilt but I think I'll have to try the carbon in the wing! Nice. Keep it coming!!! Thanks a bunch. Jery

I followed the suggestions from this build with my Supercub LP and I love how they turned out. Now my Cub flies so much better! It's definatly not the trainer that I started with 3 years ago. Now the control response is crisp, not spongy like with the stock floppy wing and rudder control. First off I removed the dihedral from the wing and stiffened it with a carbon fiber spar. Then I did the aileron mod with the hot glue hinges- my first and very easy. I also added a power 10 890kv brushless motor and 40 amp speed controll. The motor is over-kill, but it is a lot of fun to fly. Thanks Flight Test!

Just happened onto this video. Absolutely loved the build with the commentary. I think you've figured out how to do it the right way. Although many people would dislike this suggestion, you could probably have another window for the products you mention... could probably monetize your efforts in that manner. (Just a thought). Anyway, great job!

Totally agree, a swappable Cub will be awesome (with David's accent of course :p). I'll go even further: - "beginner" swappable Cub, elev., rudder and throttle - "intermediate" kit to add ailerons control (+ flaps options)

I put a xt400 on the s cub about 6 yrs ago, could do loops until I got bored ,but on a hot day sit in the shade on a chair and just -- fly. Then just buying parts cost 65 dollars. I have watched people who insisted on teaching themselves were able to fly but was way more expensive for repair parts. I did rout a slot in the bottom for an arrow shaft. And actually have building a 2nd one for two years.

Love the new format with the running commentary, but i miss the collaboration when it comes to the flights if you know what i mean, it's nice to see your reactions when something goes wrong and when something goes right :) it would be nice if you could do a combination of the two styles to change it up and keep things interesting :) E.G. the rocket plane wouldn't have been nearly as interesting with a running commentary, it really worked having all of you there watching it. Love all your vids!!!

Hey, guys. I've slowly been getting up to date on the episodes, trying to get into the hobby. The one thing that I did notice is that Josh tried to identify the style of Flap that David modified into the wing as a Fowler Flap. This is indeed a Split flap, and not a Fowler flap. The Fowler is a Split that slides back and down to increase camber on the wing to DRASTICALLY increase the lift of the wing. I loved the build and modification, and I can't wait to see what you're going to post after your European adventures. (Reference : www.skybrary.aero/index.php/Flaps )

There are a lot of people involved in the production of Flite Test in addition to the talent in front of the camera. Chad's company pays these people's wages while they work on the show, and expensive company-owned equipment is utilized in the production, so yes, his company is the sponsor. If you are so upset with Chads 'psyops', 'dirty advertisement tactics' and 'self sponsoring' maybe you should just stop watching.

I used to have a SuperCub when I was younger but I didn't know how to fly RC planes then so my dad was flying it. About halfway through the flight the speed controller burnt up (READ: All the power went through the speed controller to the servos, receiver...etc) and the plane started smoking and because it was the speed controller the plane nosedived from the loss of power and hit the ground so hard the entire thing basically disintegrated D: It got replaced with a Stinson Reliant that I still have today.

You can get the individual parts without servo, motor, and receiver for $75 bux. Why buy the completed model and throw out the ferrite motor, servos, and receiver if you are not going to use them? BTW, the complete RTF is fine just the way it is for beginners. This is one of the very best models out of the box- a genius design.

This format is good, but it lacks the visual details. Obviously it does not eat up that much production time - I mean you guy usually really nail it as far as production quality goes! Two cameras, seperate microphone and audio guy, two hosts and a producer... that's quality that I really enjoy watching! This format is better to handle in production but if possible make it a once in a while format - but it's way better than having no video comming out, though!

I love the sound of the brushed cub! To make your guys life easier just replace the brushed motor with a high KV brushless in the mount, make sure the shaft of the new motor is the same as the brushed so you can just slide on the gear. This means no custom mounts ect, literally screw the brushless into the brushed place.

aileron are Not too overpowered* and the elevator trim slightly upward i mean. just throw it and if its not over throttled and trimed anywere close it should just head up and away from you. either to the right or the left. wait a second for it to begin to fly. one or two seconds. then imput just a bit the way you want or need to go. just bank and yank dont use any rudder until you fly well. dont try and takeoof from the ground and your best bet for landing is tall grass feilds. i started wsith

Hey i feal ya, Try to do a throw take off, about 1/3 to 2/3 rds throttle depending on the power, but not too much or it will torque roll, a bit of up elevator, and throw 30 degree upward with power on and Dont over input. inputs are only bumped like buttons not held. or you will over compensate. make sure your ailerons are too overpowqered or the same will happen you will over correct

Withe the drone 2.0 radio, you will have to change most of the internals, it's much better to buy a 60 beat controller from apple or other leading markets, but if you wanna go with range with a radio system then a video would be a awesome idea on the subject, I am a little upset that parrot have got rid of the tilt mode on the drone, like josh said, it's really hard to fly the drone with the sticks on the pad because you can not fill them, that is why I got the 60 or 50 beat control.

I think the split flaps are a bit of an overkill. it is a trainer and probably that it is why it is 3 channels to start with. Definitely ailerons and maybe a 3 way switch programmed with flaperons . Or even better get a spare wing, learn on the original wing ( 3 channels ) and then swap the new wing in to learn on the next level ( 4/6 channels)

So, more glue repairs result in a better aircraft? Ya know, I think yer right. Or, maybe we become more familiar with the bird. Anyway, I agree because the worst mine look, the better they perform. From an "old school" plastics and fiberglass tech - If the foam is polystyrene (Styrofoam) solvents for it are Acetone, Gasoline, Ketone, Most 2 part epoxies are urethane based: - Ketone will dissolve most urethane based epoxies - how quickly depends on the epoxy's stage of cure. - Gasoline will not dissolve cured urethane epoxy, but it will hasten oxidation so clean the part with a good "grease cutting" soap after the process. - Acetone will not dissolve or oxidize urethane in any state.

As a creative soul I can appreciate the build talk. But actually it's more because I've really become a fan of your show and a member of Flitetest web and forum, that I watched through it. It was stretched a bit long. Like some comments here, I agree on maybe doing some close ups for the details like the splitflaps and glue hinges, cutting down the straight forward build. Simply because you guys allready have a great format on the reviews and build videos. I like that you try new things though

would be nice if u would stop incorrectly using the term "sponsoring." flitetest is FUNDED by the retail sales of the kits and it was always PRODUCED by chad's company. you cannot self sponsor! when hobbyking/horizon "sponsored" flitetest episodes which showcased it's own products. that was NOT sponsorship! that was a paid advertisement. an infomercial. now if hobbyking paid for this episode, then it would be a real sponsorship. chad - please stop trying to MANIPULATE people with ur psy-ops!

I really didn't like this it felt cheap and didn't have that personal feel that I like from your episodes, especially the build type episodes. This format might be fine for a view response platform since you show alot of clips in those any way but I feel that an episode like this needs to be approached the way you used too do it. Your personality and the high quality of your instructional videos is why I started watching in the first place. Time laps is horrible for showing us how to do things

Loved the episode, Dave, your skills both in building and flying are unbelievable, love to watch you at work :). I do feel that this should be in addition to the normal episodes though, need the comedy and personality of the usual material as well. Question on the Super Cub, would you rate this plane as suitable for a trainer for a complete novice (without mods that is) or what would you say is the best trainer out there right now? Thanks a lot and keep up the excellent work :)

Cont. Beyond that, if you MUST do more of these cause Joe has to sleep sometime, and you need to increase content, I think you have to figure out a way to get some closeups. Maybe if your doing gopro, do multi angle shots with specific points to get your sync right, hide a Hero 3 in close for better detail, something!!! It would add some Post efforts, (I know Premier allows multi-camera timelines) but looking at a 26 min static shot is not cutting it. Explore if you must, but don't stray to far.
@matthewelyash6538

I assumed you did this because you were at Joe Nall, but if your considering this as a regular format, I think it is ill advised. The content did hold me thru the whole episode, but I must be honest, it was a struggle not to stop half way, no a third of the way thru. The video looks like everybody else's "I got a go Pro now I am gonna do time laps builds videos. What sets you apart is your production values, editing and such. Do many of these and you will hurt your rep and loose viewers.

Most of the don't like replies are missing the point. This was a video on some modifications to an existing kit for intermediate builders not a hand holding exercise. Any builder considering these mods should have some prior experience. The other reason for this format is simply cost. Yes it would be great if there was a cameraman and sound recordist etc. but unless you have been living in a cave you should know FT is doing it tough these days. A talk to camera is cheap but gets the point across

Good work guys! So many people customize these Cubs, nice to see your take on it. I just did ailerons and a Park480 on mine as well. Swings a 10x7, and its a bit overkill. I dig the idea of changing the format of some of the episodes, but I think a lot of people would have liked some more detail shots on the more important part of this build. I would love to see a series of videos themed on improving or modding some of the more common planes that everyone seems to have.

Narrated format with speedup of repetitive sections or slow applications works great! It comes across like 2 relaxed friends sharing! Only 1 more thing I would have liked, a slow sim-walk around the plane. Perhaps you could build a simple slow turn table & place plane on it. Setup camera height to scale as if doing walkaround of real plane, turn camera & t-table on, & bingo, sim-walk around! It would enhance overall build doing something like that & if it comes out good, do on other builds also?

I had just finished putting a new motor in my cub (its second Park 450 and third motor overall) when I came upstairs, checked KZbin, and saw this video. Thanks to Horizon for producing such a wonderful airplane, (mine is one of the really old NiMh ones and I still love it) though I agree it should come with a brushless. Also, thank you Flite Test for making such a excellent build video. I like the format.

I personally prefer the video-formats that you usually show but I still enjoyed this one. I will try out the hot-glue hinges for sure! :) Besides from that I have a topic suggestion. Could you make a video in which you give tips to build/assemble an EPP-Flying-Wing properly? e.g.: How to tape the wing nicely and how to reinforce it in the best way. I always have problems with air-bubbles under the tape... That would be really cool! :)

Thanks 4 the ideas! Thot i wold keep it simple and start by jst adding FLAPS to my Super Cubby and change out the motor and add ailerons later. The thing is,,,, Iam new at this and judging by how long it took me to get the Spinner off (with help from my brother even) it will probally take 6 months B4 i finish? I pulled and pryed and pushed and jerked and twisted but the Spinner still din't come off? u got it off in 1/4 second in the video:)
