A float switch detects the level of a liquid in a tank or container. It floats on top of the liquid surface and acts as a mechanical switch as the liquid level goes up or down. They control devices like pumps, valves, or alarms to notify users. A common application is a water tank, like in your toilet or rainwater catcher, uses float switches to detect the water level.
A float switch consists of a hollow floating body and an internal switch, also called a sensor. The most common internal sensor is a reed switch. This switch works using a magnet. If the magnet is close to the reed, it creates a closed circuit and the current can flow. If the magnet moves away from the reed, the connection is removed and thus no electricity can flow.
The float switch itself floats on top of a liquid. As the liquid level goes up or down, it moves vertically with the liquid level. The switching point is determined by the length of the cable up to the counterweight. It will eventually be more vertical, causing a magnet to fall to with gravity, to either come into contact with the reed switch or away from it.
There are different types of float switches. They are available with internal counterweights, which float on the liquid. They are also available with an external counterweight. Here the counterweight is mounted at a preset height. Finally, there are also switches without counterweight, these are then fixed with the cable in the tank or basin by means of, for example, ty-reps.
Depending on the counterweight and the length of the cable, the magnet makes contact with the reed switch or the contact is removed so that the switch opens or closes. This allows an electrical current to flow to the connected device or, on the contrary, disconnects the connection.
Typically, the switch is installed in a tank and connected to a pump so that it is used to stop or start the flow of fluid. They are also available with different types of electrical connections. You have normally open and normally closed float switches and switches with a changeover contact. Here you can choose whether the switch switches on or off when a contact is formed with the reed switch. This gives you more freedom on whether your device should switch on or off with a full or empty tank.

Thanks for detail desription...I need changeover float swich which can turn on in Lower possition and turn off on higher possition?where to buy?
@Tameson
@Tameson 6 ай бұрын
Hello, for your application, you could consider a bi-stable float switch, which is designed to turn on at a lower position and off at a higher position. This type of switch is ideal for maintaining a specific liquid level within a tank or sump. You can view and purchase our range of changeover float switches directly from our website. Here is the link to the appropriate section for your convenience: tameson.com/collections/float-switches Feel free to browse through the options, and if you need any further advice or assistance in selecting the right product for your specific needs, do not hesitate to contact us.

Hello, if you use float switch with external weight the distance from the weight to the float switch depends on switch on and switch of level that you have in your tank.

I need something like this to work with a US Solid ball valve. When the float is down I want power to go to the ball valve so it will open. When the float reaches the top of the tank, I want it to cut the power to the ball valve which will leave it closed. Will this work like that?
@Tameson
@Tameson 6 ай бұрын
For your application, you could consider a float switch that is normally closed (NC) when the float is down and opens the circuit (cuts power) when the float rises. This type of switch will allow power to flow to your US Solid ball valve when the water level is low, causing it to open, and will cut the power, leaving the valve closed when the float reaches the top of the tank. Please ensure to verify the electrical specifications of the ball valve and the float switch to ensure they are compatible. You can find more information in our article: tameson.com/pages/float-switch or write on our support email support@tameson.com

Okay did I miss something , does normally on mean when it floating upright the contacts are touching and it's a closed switch?, And the pump goes on? Normally off means it goes on when it goes upside down, that's like the most important info of all.....I need to buy one that makes the pump go on when it's going downward and the water level is low so it turns on and fills the tank back up. Nothing in this helps me know what it's called

Normally open (NO) float switch: The electrical circuit within the switch remains open when the switch is at the bottom and closed in the ‘up’ position. So, the switch is open with gravity pulling it down and closes as the liquid level rises to the pre-set level. Normally closed (NC) float switch: The electrical circuit within the switch remains closed when the switch is at the bottom and open in the ‘up’ position. So, the switch is closed with gravity pulling it down and opens as the liquid level rises to the pre-set level. You can check more details in the article: tameson.com/pages/float-switch

How can I connect float swith to inbuilt submisble sollar pump
@Tameson
@Tameson 7 ай бұрын
To ensure proper installation, you will need to connect the float switch to the control box of your solar pump system. The float switch typically has two wires: one that connects to the power supply and the other to the pump controller. When the water reaches a certain level, the switch will trigger the pump to turn on or off accordingly.

but what does the yellow cylinder do?
@Tameson

Hi. The yellow cylinder is a counterweight that holds the float switch in a certain position. Based on the position of the counterweight and cable length, you can set different control levels in your tank.
