Looks great Bob. The "classic grey" stain was a great choice.
@cemx868 жыл бұрын
At 7:11 Bob mentions that the front (outside) of the opening is a little smaller than the back (inside). This is a VERY common problem with inset dry-walled areas like this. Imbedded under the drywall plaster at the left front corner where the two walls come together is something called a "corner bead" (Google it). This bead is typically metal and helps both protect the corner from bumps and as a guide for the plasterer. The plastering makes this corner slightly higher than ("proud" of) the remainder of the wall. So sliding something into an inset area like this is always tricky! It might have been easier for Bob to leave the front lip off the desk until after it was installed. Good looking project overall!
@mickstephenson8 жыл бұрын
+cemx86 I thought americans did't usually plaster over drywall, how do they hide the corner beading? In the UK it seeems that all drywall gets skimmed
@cemx868 жыл бұрын
+Michael Stephenson - We don't typically plaster entirely over the drywall, only at the joints to provide a nice flat surface. The edges of the drywall sheets are tapered to allow the "mud" to be sanded level. There is also an imbedded paper or fiberglass tape to prevent cracking. However, at the corners (inside and outside) there is a bead/tape of some sort to smooth the transition. Ceilings are nearly identical (without outside corners!) but often the ceiling is sprayed with a textured slurry as it is faster and cheaper which I do not like as it is much more difficult to make invisible repairs.

Nice build, Bob. The grey stain looks really classy! One way you could add extra storage would be to have a hinged lid on the top surface of the desk that opened up into a compartment in the interior of the frame. You could just have a small finger hole to open it and close it and latch it with a magnet. If you position this underneath something like the lamp, it then becomes a secret or hidden compartment.

I built two very similar desks in my old house. There was an odd sized nook next to a closet in one of the small bedrooms, so I created two floating desks: one as a study desk, and the one above it to hold a TV/Dvd player. Worked out great and was very simple to uninstall when I moved. Great project Bob.

Looks good! A thought on your storage idea: Since you can't lift the top, can you make it so you drop the base on either side of the centre support and have a box or drawer slide in? Best idea I have without removing the top and making a pair of doors in it that hinge open to reveal the storage (which would basicly require almost starting again).

A few design thoughts if this area would be used with a computer or light. Drill a large hole into the top and bottom for cable routing (power and for printer cables, etc) and insert a cable hole cover (which comes in lots of colors) to finish it off. The excess cables could then be pushed into the area between the table top and bottom. A printer could be house on a roll around matching cart under the table or a matching shelf (with under counter lighting?) above the table. The printer cables (power and control) could be routed inside the wall.
@necrojoe8 жыл бұрын
+cemx86 I think I actually would have left it about 1" away from the back, I think, for cable management, rather than a hole. That way cables can drop straight back no matter where it is on the desk. Both ways work, and have their benefits and drawbacks. I work with office furniture, and one of our lines uses holes and one uses a "wire gap" and I like the "wire gap" much more...but that's just me.

Fun project, Bob! Two biscuit tips: use better biscuits, as there is not normally a difference in thickness. They normally align quite well. Don't buy your biscuits where you bought your biscuit joiner. ;) Also buy a biscuit glue bottle. The tip is shaped like a biscuit. MUCH easier. I think I paid $3 for mine on eBay. :)

Awesome work! The project is done so this is completely useless, but if the front is narrower than the rear then you could always have it lift up with hinges in the rear. It would complicate the ability to leave stuff 'in place on the surface but it would still be possible to access the 'inner cavity' if that is required.

I'd generally stick to battery-powered tools at first. Corded tools tend to be more powerful and harder to get used to as a beginner. Also, I never use any tools with rotary blades (because I find them much too loud and intimidating) but a scroll saw is something I could easily recommend.

A 50$ drill is going to last you, I don't know, 10 hours of utilisation before it breaks ? A good drill is AT LEAST 150$, same with a miter saw, a not cheap one is around 200$, a sander is around 70$, and we're not talking about the laser, clamps and all that. So yeah, maybe not 5000, but definitely more than just a couple hundred bucks. Of course you can make it with cheap tools, once or twice...And even if they don't break immediately, it's really not pleasant to work with cheap tools.
