Thank you Peter! I've been eagerly awaiting this episode as I was on the Neptune trans-Atlantic. Unquestionably the best overall design exterior & interiors of the current newbuilds, of any line. So much intricate attention to detail. I love spotting the slight differences within the fleet beyond just the art. My favorite art aboard Neptune is the striking Mid Century Modern port city lights painting on the side bulkhead, port, mid The Restaurant. Every time I enter the Explorers Lounge I'm immediately reminded of the double decked glass wall & lounge aft aboard the original Pacific/Island Princess - Pacific/Carib Lounge. I could go on & on.

That's so fantastic that you mention that painting. That entire series in the restaurant is so striking. I wish I got more detailed footage of all of them but there was so little time. Thanks so much for enjoying and posting! :)

Great impression of a very tasteful ship. I also like the size and look of her, it's not so massive. Love the Scandinavian design everywhere ❤️

My wife and I recently enjoyed our first Viking ocean cruise and couldn’t be more pleased. I unfortunately got Covid a couple days into the cruise. I was treated well but was confined to my cabin for 5 days. Not only was I able to get the normal complementary room service, they included both specialty restaurant offerings for my wife and I each day as well. Considering that every cabin has a balcony on Viking, and the food was excellent, my Covid quarantine was not a bad experience. I am booked for the 2023/2024 World Cruise and can’t wait.

Overall a good overview of the ships spaces. I do wonder why there is not a hint of any downside. The spa for instance appears relatively small, I can imagine the traffic snarls if even id a small % of passengers attempt to use the facilities. Similar with the common spaces on other decks - hard to believe that the ship does not feel crowded when passengers will inevitably flock to areas of common interest upon departure/arrival, meal times and showtimes. Additionally, food quality is glossed over and hyped without any detail. The overwhelmingly positive spin makes this look like an ad for Viking.

Thank you. These are among my favorite ships. My only issue with them is that I would love for there to be more variety with each ship having its own style of decor but Viking's philosophy is to have all identical, save for individual artworks. In my experience, the spa was no more crowded than the spas on other ships during sea days but perhaps other people have had a different experience? That said, on my last Viking cruise, there were so many ports, we never even had a chance to get to the spa.

Will be on our third Viking cruise soon, this one 14 days in a penthouse veranda again. Trivia: When I visited the museum holding the Bayeux "Tapestry" we were informed that it's not a tapestry but an embroidery. Who knew?

One curious omission aboard the Viking Ocean ships is that there are no actual hanging woven tapestries. Sure there is the Bayeux Tapestry in the stairwells, but that's only a wallpaper reproduction. The lack of any real tapestries might possibly be a SOLAS issue. I remember the Royal Viking Star, Sky, Sea & Pacific/Island Princess had beautiful tapestries.
@midshipcinema
@midshipcinema Жыл бұрын
So true on the tapestries. I remember the top of the forward stairtowers on the RVL trio had impressive ones. And, of course the two VENTURE/PRINCESSES had them in their libraries just off the balconies of the Terrace Lounge and even the RCCL trio had their share of them.

Thank you for this wonderful deck by deck tour of this magnificent ship. However, I cannot help but to feel that as beautiful as this ship is, it still completely lacks the character and majesty of the largely lost and wonderful mid century ships. It is a great pity that size and the ability to generate revenue have become more important than the truly unique and characterful experience the older ships offered.
@midshipcinema
@midshipcinema Жыл бұрын
Well, as you know, I LOVE those midcentury one-off ships more than just about anything in the world. Maybe it is my footage or presentation that makes this ship and her sisters fall short of the mark for you. I think they are about as good as it gets for what can be done today and while they are twice the size of the older ships, they don't feel it in any way. Ships like CANBERRA and the first ORIANA and even ROTTERDAM '59 seemed huge and yet they are smaller than this ship, which is a breeze to navigate. By keeping the capacity under 1000, I think Viking has done a great job in keeping the ships as intimate as possible and still being able to make a profit.

Perhaps you simply don't like the spare Scandinavian ethos of this design? These are beautiful ships, well appointed, gracious and decidedly lacking in ornate decoration. Having traveled on numerous Viking cruises, I can attest to the beauty, and yes, the majesty, of these ships!

I admire Viking for not installing bumper cars and endless waterslides. But, the shortfall is highly bland modern-condo-style interior decor. There's no magic. No Tiki lounges, fine paneling, stylish chairs etc. Nothing, i suspect, that you might be tempted to buy to put in your house ?
@midshipcinema
@midshipcinema Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I agree about the furniture but I understand your comment. It is not overly "designy" or trendy but there are definitely things I would put in my house in, say, 30 years. The goal with Viking is for comfort and not an over-the-top Celebrity style. I think they've achieved that in spades. I find with them that the more closely you look, the more you are rewarded with pleasing details. I actually feel on these ships the same vibes I got from GRIPSHOLM, KUNGSHOLM, SAGAFJORD and VISTAFJORD, minus, of course the genuine wood paneling, which obviously cannot work here.
@TheClive1949
@TheClive1949 Жыл бұрын
Grant, I totally agree with you. It is all very 'nice and tasteful' but there seems to be nothing at all that has that special quality, that moment when you stop and say "Oh... this is lovely". Yes, there is some very nice furniture but with each space it seems to be more and more of the same. And by the end of our tour I was so over those damned room divider things with books and artifacts in or on them. As for the external look, yes, lovely bows, no doubt about that and yes they look better than the two Saga ships that are of a very similar size and yes they are better-looking than any other new ships - but that isn't saying a lot is it?. Do I want to sail on a Viking ocean cruise? No, not particularly. However, thank you Peter for giving us this tour which, despite all that I have said, I enjoyed.

@@TheClive1949 Hah, Clive, I so appreciate your frankness. I do have to say that I sincerely believe you would enjoy a Viking cruise. The detailing is fantastic, as is the food and service and NO KIDS! The Observation Lounge is stunning, the prom fully encircles and the spa is fantastic. The ships never feel crowded and the tea is the best I've had afloat. Real leaves, great treats to go with, etc. Although there is no wood, these ships capture, for me, the essence of the KUNGSHOLM, GRIPSHOLM, SAGA and VISTA in their spaciousness and pure Scandinavian sensibility. Anyway, that's just me gushing. BTW, I think the new Saga ships look pretty smart on the outside and would love to try them one day but they really aren't interested in the American markets I report to.

@@midshipcinema Peter, Yes, the detailing of the interior as well as the sense of space did come across in your video. No kids is an essential for me, in fact I have not been a a cruise ship carrying children since Christmas 2000. Given that there aren't too many cruise ships out there that appeal to me I expect that I might have to bite the Viking bullet some day. As for Saga, they have pretty much fallen off my radar, their cruises are mostly not very interesting. As far as itineraries are concern Fred. Olsen has them beat. In a few days I'm off on Borealis and then on Azamara Journey. I'm looking forward to finding out what the Azamara experience is like.

It's a Scandinavian design. They want things to look nice, yet simple. People in Scandinavia don't care how extravagant or bold things look. They care more about simplicity.
