G'Day, Great follow up video to your earlier How to one. Your rig is much the same as what I do with the garage sale line that I told you about. It is polypropylene. I sometimes add a short 6 inch length of red fluoro mono to the tip of the line for visibility although if I couldn't see the tip of the main line it would be time for a new pair of spectacles! I still haven't tried that nylon masons twine out on the water. I've been out fishing a few times lately but that's been on tiny local creeks for trout using a dry fly with a nymph on a dropper. I'll let you know how it performs, when I eventually get it wet. Thanks again for your videos. Cheers and tight lines, Steve.

OZAngler I'll look forward to the update! I would suspect the nylon would really cast well since it is heavier. I found a place that sells pink Polypropylene line locally. I hope to pick some up to try out soon! I like the yellow in moderate too low light and can see it easily. It is a little hard to see at times when there is a strong glare from the sun on the water without sunglasses. I think the pink would show better in those situations.

I enjoy your vids.....I like your common sense approach(priceless)......my Dad used to call this "good solid down-home cornfield logic"....... good stuff..... I just wanted to mention that my favorite leader material is the cords off of old 1" mini-blinds (yes, the ones in windows) ..... this seems to be the perfect thickness for me to cast a 25 ft line(and I do that with my 9 ft uxcell).....I do use a floatant (Loon I think)...... and BTW, if you pull the inner core out of the cord the remaining hollow cord makes good Lillian....... LOL .... fun stuff ...... on some of the larger blinds the cords are much thicker but they all seem to be made up of 3 layers.....an outer braided, an inner braided, and the core which is strand......It seems that the inner hollow cord is same size as the cords used on the 1" mini-blinds....... I am presently working on an idea to make me some leader material out of 8 or 10 or 12 lb. test cheap monofilament line....I used 10 lb. test and braided a 3 strand leader that works good but I want to plait with 4 strands and maybe get some different colors of lines and plait a 6 strand(I'll let you know how that works... but before you try it I will mention it is very time consuming.....something to do though.... good for the concentration.....LOL)...... and BTW I have 3 Tenkara rods(all different flexes and lengths) and when ready to put in my backpack they weigh 11.4 ounces (total all together).....every "survivalist" or hiker should have at least 1 in their pack(more cornfield logic)...... total weight of my "tackle box" is 15 ounces

Jay Thomas Reset thanks for the compliments and ideas! I have not braided mono for Tenkara lines but I have furled them together to make tenkara lines. Cajun Line is a nice red color and Mr. Crappie makes a few different colors and they even have a multi colored line that you may find useful. They make for a nice stiff line with a little less memory than just a single strand mono. I like the info on miniblind cord!

Well, I rigged up an 8ft $8 rod today and caught a trout. This rig worked great and if the fish had been like they were yesterday, I'd have caught plenty more. Thanks for this tutorial

Nice video! Bought some mason line, tested a section of it in the sink - and it did not float🤔 It’a three stranded twisted line… Any ideas?
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 5 ай бұрын
You may have gotten nylon (which is more common to find) and not polypropylene. Nylon is more dense than water so it sinks. Polypropylene is less dense than water so it floats. There are different polypropylene formulations that are more dense than others but all are less dense than water. Polypropylene will float for quite some time before it becomes waterlogged. Once it gets waterlogged, you need to do a false cast to get the water out of it so it will float again. If the packaging says polypropylene and it doesn’t float at all, you more than likely got a mislabeled product (it is pretty common for items made in China to be mislabeled).

What size polypropylene line line did you use?

It is hard to say exactly because it compresses so easily. I'd say around 1mm to 1.5mm in diameter or so.

I know this is an older video but I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried or had luck with thicker Spectra/Dyneema line? I have some that I believe is 1.2mm that I was planning on trying as soon as my $2.46 rod gets here just for the heck of it. This isn't 30lbs more like 350lbs but it should float, but water proof, is stiff, slick, no memory issues. Only downside I can see is that it's not dense at all.
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 6 жыл бұрын
I have not tried any that size. I recently purchased some heavier braid (I believe it was 100lb test) to try but haven't had a chance to yet. If you try it, please let everyone know how it does!

The Fishing Hobby I won't have anything to compare it to unfortunately outside of regular fly line. I put some on my baitcaster since the reel was off and it was able to cast it just fine even though it didn't load the rod at all. When my cheapo "Tenkara" rod comes I'll set it up on there. It's light, zero stretch, no memory, floats, and darn near bullet proof. I actually originally picked it up for Bear Bag line.
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like it will cast really well then. A good place to start experimenting with line length would be to use the braid about the same length as the rod and then use half that length of mono or flourocarbon for your leader. If the braid hits the water too soon (way before the leader) then you may want to go longer with the braid because the line is heavy and casts too quickly. Those are just some things I have figured out that work well for me personally. Usually the inexpensive rods are a little stiffer than real Tenkara rods from my experience so they will probably work pretty well with the braid you have 👍
@MJGEGB
@MJGEGB 6 жыл бұрын
Update on this comment. I picked up some 90lbs test Dyneema line in Orange. Finally got my cheapo rod in and got around to using it. Being a novice I can't say how well it worked, but it worked well for me. I ended up landing two Bluegill first time out on my setup. This was with a 270cm fiberglass rod, 90lbs Dyneema level line equal length, 4lbs mono tippet, and a Tenkara fly with reverse hackle. The line floats, is easy enough to hold off the water, and seems to cast fairly well. A thicker line would probably let you cast a long line, but too thick and I'd imagine you'd overload the rod.

Sounds like that works well! I have some 100lb PE braid that I still haven't tried yet (Dyneema is a type of PE). Sounds like I better give it a go 👍

@@TheSshadow7 this works really well for warm water species like bass and sunfish. I haven't tried it for trout fishing yet. If the fish are easily spooked, the water droplets that fall off the line on a cast may be a problem. I don't really trout fish a whole lot, so I'm not really sure about that. Good luck on your fishing trip!

Hello, can you please tell me about the polypropylene, like it's diameter, and what it's usually labeled as (cord, twine, line)? And does what size flies you use matter and affect things? I've been stocking up for the next spring when I take up fly fishing, so I've got from #1/0 Alaskan/Russian River flies to #4-6 wooly worms to #10-12 natural ants & March blacks, besides a bunch of other bulk-sale bags like white millers and bumble bees, etc... so I have a bunch to work with. Also, any experience using tippet rings and fast-snaps with tenkara setups? Been looking into those since I will also be doing standard fly fishing as well with the 6.5' 3/4wt Eagle Claw Featherlight I just bought, and my uxcell 6'10" just came in yesterday too so I've been looking around at Yosankara videos like yours (Yosan means budget and it seems appropriate to call the frugal side of tenkara that! Would make budget tenkara more searchable if it caught on.). Also also, ever use micro/finesse plastics and lures with it, such as with 2-3" trout worms and 1/32oz spinners like how conventional fly fishers sometimes do?
@TheFishingHobby
@TheFishingHobby 7 жыл бұрын
Here are a couple of my videos using my Tenkara setup. What I do may not be exactly what you are looking for. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGm2modqaZKDe7M kzbin.info/www/bejne/Znytpapqq7J0rsk The polypropylene line is much larger than what Tenkara users are usually looking for. The line I use is called Polypropylene Mason's Line found in hardware stores and it is approximately 1.25mm in diameter but it is hard to get an exact measurement because the line compresses very easily. It is a 3 strand twisted line. This will seem odd I'm sure because Tenkara rods are made for fly fishing but I don't really use flies with it so I'm not going to be able to help you with fly selection unfortunately. I subscribe to another channel called "Robbie's Fly Tying Channel" that you may want to check out. He ties a lot of his own flies and does a lot of fly fishing videos using his Tenkara rod. He will have some good info on flies for you. If you stop by his channel, let him know I sent you. I also don't use tippet snaps or rings, just knots and loops. I do use micro/finesse soft plastics and have had very good luck with Creme trout worms and various soft plastic nymphs and crickets as well. I use live crickets a lot and they produce a lot of fish in the Tenkara setup. There isn't anything quite like fishing weightless live crickets on a Tenkara setup. We have caught fairly large bass with this technique and tons of sunfish. Hopefully this info is helpful and best of luck to you with your Tenkara fishing. It is a really fun way to fish no matter how you go about it!
