Жыл бұрын

We recently traveled to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens because they are often sought out for advice on building bog habitats. Given that we have an inundated area of land at Flock that we'd like to restore to bog habitat, we decided to check their build out, plantings and maintenance.

Watching two people nerd out about bog plants and birds makes me think there is still good in the world ❤ love the chance to learn through the interaction as a fly on the pitcher plant as it were

Summer, it will be interesting to see which way you go with the bog on your property. I’m thinking u may not need or want a liner. Given the need for a botanic garden to have a constant show they may have to have the liner, sand etc. in order to control conditions. In your case the desire all of you seem to have to maintain a more natural area it’s hard to think about adding the liner especially after watching all the work everyone put in to removing the landscape fabric etc.

This is a great idea! I don't know what species would be native to our Iowa prairie bog but when we built our driveway we inadvertently created a bog. This spring it is holding water, which it does around 90% of the time so you have inspired me, once again! ;-) Great content as always and I look forward to seeing where you go with yours!

One of my fantasy home purchases is a lampshade made of sarracenia pitchers. They're spendy but look so cool. I visited Volo Bog in Illinois as a kid and still remember being able to bounce on the peat layer.

That is so beautiful! Pitcher plants are so interesting. The collection of plants are so striking together, like a meadow. I tried growing a pitcher plant as a houseplant. It did fine, you have to have humidity (kept in in a closure with moisture and moss) and I even got a few pitchers. I had to find another home for it, but made sure it went to someone who was familiar with those plants. A bog would be so lovely on your property. You have so many possiblities there. Another very interesting video...thank you!

Very interesting and educational video. I live within the blue line with wetland areas that I battle invasives! Trying to create woodland gardens has been challenging and a lot of constant work. I would enjoy if you did a video of the invasive species on your property and what you do to try to combat them. Especially in your wetland areas.

I loved this video. Ahhh, my childhood memories again.. maybe he went to my WI swamp too. I liked it, that he was freaking out, because you spoke his language. 😂 Pow! Pow! Pow! He couldn't believe it! I can't wait for your bog project to start. Too bad mosquito repelling plants, can't live in a bog..or can they? . maybe on an island.. but then the ducks would probably come... but maybe you'd enjoy that. 😅 Is the pond stocked with fish? Looking forward to everything. I've recommended your channel to a lady who also speaks your language. She will love this and the visuals.

#1 is definitely habitat loss ......millions of carnivorous plants are being bulldozed for residential and business buildings, roads, etc,!!!! Acres upon acres for new subdivisions, are drained by digging ditches. Then, bulldozers come in and tear up and flatten every living tree and plant practically......😢

Don't quote me on it, I'm not an expert, but from what I know there's not really any alternative to peat for this specific type of garden. A lot of these plants just won't grow in anything else.

A brilliant video which was great to watch, I live in the UK and will never have the chance of visiting the garden. Im a member of the UK carnivorous plant society and have a few Sarracenias in my garden which after i repotted this year are doing so much better. I think the leucophylla is my favourite and will try to get one when i can afford it, if not ill try to buy some seed, keep up the good work preserving the bog lands, cheers
