This is a great tutorial. It will take much longer than a week at my pace but Harry is making steady progress. He can follow my hand around and he lands back on the perch so far. The tricky part will be getting my large self out of Harry's way LOL.

Trying to decide if I should get a Parrotlet or Love Bird. I eventually want more than one bird for an outdoor aviary. I'm told that Parrotlets do not get along with other birds. I just think the Parrotlets are soooo cute. Is the Parrotlet a one person Bird? If yes, are Love Birds just as "trainable"?

@HermioneGranger-ev3lj
@HermioneGranger-ev3lj 7 жыл бұрын
Sarah Bourn if your bird bites you it's usually for attention. My best advice is if your bird bites you then you put the bird down and walk away because they'll know you don't like it. If you tell your bird not to they'll keep on doing it because your giving them the attention they want. If your bird has been doing it for a long time it might take longer for them to understand that they shouldn't bite you. That's my advice. Good Luck (P.S if it works write another comment😄)

Hermione Granger Their bird is not biting them. Read again. Their bird is climbing up on their finger using their beak and it hurts a bit.
@jessica6967

If you still have this problem - give them perches with a rough surface (not sandpaper which is too abrasive for the feet) and wooden toys that they can destroy. Filing down the beak should keep it trim and not as sharp. Alternatively, re-teach step-up into a perch or your sleeve. Or always offer your hand lower than the bird, so they're stepping downwards - not upwards

Mine does that too but they don't hurt.. My budgie bite me in a way such that it never hurts, not a little also. When yours bites u, put them down on their perch and DO NOT GIVE THEM THEIR TREAT. Giving them the treat will be as a reward...

Some birds may find moving your hand away mid-flight too scary. Something that can really help is instead of you turning, using a pole or cone or other object and moving around that. You are stationary, you just shift farther and farther around the cone, shaping them to fly around the cone/pole/whatever. Then you can fade out the pole, lowering it more and more until there is nothing left. You can even step in front of their "landing perch" and offer your hand as the new landing perch- getting a "A-to-A" flight. Trained greys, non-hand tame crows, and bumbly hyacinth macaw babies that way :)

Love watching your videos!! So informative. I just adopted a beautiful little 9 week old pacific parrotlet and named her Molly. I was wondering if you cover your birds at night and if you do what type of material do you use? Molly loves to nibble on anything and everything and likes to sleep butted right up to the edge of the cage and I'm concerned she might eat at whatever I cover her cage with and may get caught in threads or try to eat the material and choke. Over protective new birdie mom here, just want the best and keep her happy and healthy.

@@hayley706 spray millet works like a charm on my birdies. I don't give it to them other than during training. ( I remove it from the stems you buy it on, then sieve out the chaff with some net fabric so I have nice tidy little tupperware bins full of it to train them with.. sounds like a lot more work than it actually is. i only have to do it once ever three months or so.. but they love spray millet like nothing else so.. /// am curious to try sunflower seeds.. or crushed walnut.. as i gave some walnut a while back and my one budgie lost her mind over it.. Had to take it away becuase she got so ravenous over it before she stuffed herself full as it's pretty fatty and she's already prone to being a fatty little budgie to begin with.. LOL That's def when you know you have a training treat on your hands!! LOL

Hi, Love your videos! I have learned so much about being a good bird mom. I have a sort of lame question. I would like to do some trick training with my birds but I am super intimidated and not quite sure where to begin. I have two very tame female cockatiels between 1 and 2 years old. They know how to step up and are target trained( with a clicker and a target stick). They sort of know how to turn around on a perch following a target, but I haven't been able to fade out the target successfully. You have so many training videos I think would help me, but I literally can not decide where to begin. Can you recommend a relatively easy next trick? Maybe a training sequence? I also recently adopted an older male cockatiel. He is still just settling in and learning to trust me. Right now I am just working on getting him to take treats from my hand. Thanks in advance!
@ShadowTheRat
@ShadowTheRat 7 жыл бұрын
Jana Shaver Not a bird owner/trainer but I do train my rats, and I can tell you that spin, shake, and later wave are the simplest tricks out there. If your having trouble fading out the target, try simply luring your bird in a circle (hold the treats in your hand and guide your bird in a circle). Overtime, make your circles faster and higher above the birds head. Eventually, you'll be able to simply raise your hand and make a tight "circle" above their head, and they'll spin. Then, you can begin saying spin before you do the hand signal. Finally, you can just say spin, and if you've practiced enough, the bird will spin on cue.

Hello, I have a problem: Every time I train my birds to fly to me, if they are obedient, I will greatly praise them and give them a snack. However, the current situation is that they will only be willing to fly to me when they are hungry, if not they are not hungry, they often ignore me... I don't want this. I hope they can respond to my instructions at any time. How do I do this, please?
