Sorry for the hiatus, we'll still be slow for a while but we are aiming to get back to videos a little more frequently here!
edit: I notice I managed to forget the text for step 4, it was intended to just say "making mistakes" but that's alright, just irony at it's finest

If any of you are wandering, you could also cut a wooden food skewer or chop stick to the size that you need and then use that as the “birch stick” that is what I have seen a couple of other people do so, I thought I’d share the information!

So, I've had this green cheek conure for a few months now and he's a rescue bird my mom and her co-workers found at work after he flew into a window. He was barley conscious but they managed to save him from further injury. My mom decided to bring him home since we had this old cage from our previous birds, and, currently, I've had him since the summer. I got him used to my presence and trained him to take food from my hand. I let him out of the cage now and then and he's a lot calmer outside the cage than he is on the inside. He even responds to my voice. You'd think he'd be hand trained at this point, however, I can't for the life of me make him any less scared of my hands than he already is; which seems rather odd since he'll take food from my hands but will never let me put them near him. When I need to change his food dishes or readjust something in his cage, I'll put my hand inside and he'll be terrified. I feel like I've tried everything but I can't seem to get anything to work. I feel like it may be a result of neglect from whoever his previous owners were. Any tips on how to make him trust me more?

To be honest when I watched this, I almost cried because the one bird that would have learned this with no problem was my bird and sadly he passed away, not recently but not to long ago and I still cannot get over it because he was MY bird and MY best friend. Now we have my moms quaker which is a lot harder to train than mine was so it’s taking a long time.

I’m glad you’re back! I’m planning on getting a bird, and I just want to ask if it’s okay to keep one bird in the same room you sleep in? I heard there is this disease you can get from their poop. I also read that’s if you deal with birds a lot or have multiple. I don’t have a place or room like your bird room. And anywhere else in my house doesn’t seem to be a good idea for the other people in my house. So is it okay enough to keep one in my room?

YAY! You came back! Also, I have a question. I'm trying to convert my parakeet to Roudybush pellets, and she eats them if I offer them to her individually, but she seems to think that in a pile, they're some sort of foraging toy and she shuffles through them, spraying pellets everywhere. Also, I'm trying to get her to eat fruits and veggies, and she expresses interest when I eat an apple in front of her, but she doesn't try to eat it. Same thing with kale. (apparently, though, she likes waffles) Any tips to get her to eat healthy? Thanks. - a parakeet owner + blue floof who is dominating the keyboard

Hi there! I'm not sure exactly how you can get your bird to be not scared of everything or what you've tried so far, but based on what I've gleaned from this channel, you could always try positive reinforcement techniques, such as giving your tiel a treat whenever he steps toward something voluntarily. That, of course, depends on him being food-motivated, but the point is to get him to start associating whatever the thing is with the food/reward so that it becomes less scary and more "good" (some birds, for example, might prefer being rewarded with attention or play; it depends entirely on what your tiel finds enjoyable). You can try watching a couple of the videos Courtney's done on this channel about things like target training and rewarding your bird. All of her training videos, while covering many types of tricks, use basic positive reinforcement principles throughout, as well as emphasizing the importance of learning to read your bird's body language to gauge how comfortable/interested/stressed he is about a situation. But the most important thing is to go at your bird's pace. Break down whatever you want him to do into small, repeatable steps and be open to adjusting your methods if he's confused/frustrated/scared. What Courtney did here when Zeeby started getting confused after progressing so well is a pretty good example. She focused on the step that was causing Zeeby trouble and treated it almost as a separate trick. She also considered other possible reasons Zeeby might be having trouble with the trick and tried adjusting her hand movements to make them easier for her to follow. (Remember also that for most of these training videos, Courtney is condensing several 20/30-minute training sessions into 10-minute videos, so anyone trying these tricks or tips with their bird may need more or less time teaching them.) I know that your issue is about your bird being fearful of everything, but I still believe that a lot of the principles used in the training videos would help. If I recall correctly, one of her earliest training videos about syringe training might be relevant here. In it, Courtney tried to encourage Zeeby and Mia to touch the syringe with their beaks by putting fruit juice in it, but changed over to puréed yams after realizing Mia was frightened by the bright red colour of the juice and wouldn't go near it. In fact, almost any training video featuring Mia would be good since she's the more fearful of the two. The target training video would be a good one to view simply because training your bird to target is useful as a basis for learning other tricks. I think the video about rewarding your bird includes a part about distinguishing rewards from "big rewards" for when your bird does something exceptional well / catches on to a trick very quickly. And I'd recommend watching her longer video (about 30 minutes) about bird behaviour and flock dynamics if you haven't already (I checked, it's in her Topics playlist). The harness training videos might also help since part of that is literally enticing your bird to approach an unfamiliar thing on a step-by-step basis until they're practically sticking their head through the harness itself to get to the reward. All in all though, any training (or in your case acclimating) requires time, patience, and an understanding of how your bird communicates / reading his body language. Good luck to you two ^_^ !
