@MsProvenzo They were a little scared, cause new. After a month though, it is a fun jungle gym of toys and experiences. I don't feel bad for leaving them inside it for a few hours of the day. (if I don't they just follow my poor cockatiel around all day lol) I did have to separate all 4 of the stainless steel bowls though, the smaller cage I had no choice on where to put things, now they can stretch out and enjoy it all! It was well worth the $129 for the cage. I will be buying a second one when I can afford it for my cockatiel. The old budgie cage wasn't bad for 2, but when I got the other 2, I knew they would need the upgrade. Now it is a cage big enough for at least 10. I have some videos on my channel of the old cage. Just been to depressed to make any new videos.

Part of why I keep the middle of the cage sort of open for my parrotlet isn't just for flight, but also because I actually do put my food bowls on the floor. I use the large bowls from one of my pionus' old cage, and put crinkly paper in both of them (really a whole lot). I have multiple of these bowls in there. I tend put different ratios of my parrotlet's food in them, sometimes only one gets food and the other does not. Her pellets and Nutri-Berries anyway. This way, I replicate her natural foraging behavior more as she rummages through big bowls filled with crinkly paper. And it keeps her mind sharp. So... that's a fun way to feed your birds. This is especially useful for me because my parrotlet loses interest in her toys VERY quickly, no matter how much I rotate. She plays, and then loses interest after a few hours.. No matter how much I rotate, adapt, change, etc. And digging through large piles of paper crinkles is a good way to keep her busy in spite of that. And of course, it extends the usable range of her cage the way that lowering perches does.

I just got a HUGE CAGE for a tiny cockatiel, it's about 4 ft. But only has four perches and only four toys... I have one java wood, and a natural perch, and two rope perches. And I was looking forward to getting more perches from online. This really helped a lot.

Where did you get your perches? My parrotlet for the first 4 months of his life was raised on Kaytee seed only and apparently apples and pasta but he hasn't eaten them for me. I bought tops brand seed and pellets and he only wants the seed. I thought maybe the pellets were too big? I'm going to try to grind them up and mix them in with his seed. I am using an avian light on him for the majority of the day to mimic sunlight. I've taught him a few tricks and he seems to really like me but he constantly wants to chew on my nail. Any tips on how to stop that behavior other than trying to ignore it? I tried gently moving my hand to try to have him lose his balance a little bit and it worked but then he goes right back to my nail. He's only five and a half months old and I had read that they can go through biting stage for the first year? Thanks for all your videos!

This is great! As a new bird owner I was so lost when setting up my cockatiel's cage, videos like this are super helpful. Also, my bird doesn't have much problem with throwing food in his water but every day, when I take him out of the cage in the morning, there's poop on his food bowl. Everyday. I obviously clean everything daily but does anyone know why this happens? He doesn't sleep about it or anything, and doesn't matter where I move the bowl there's gonna be poop on it in the next morning
@xStaticSumi4 жыл бұрын
Maybe he's taking some food in his beak/foot and then turning around to eat it so his tail is above the food? I'm not sure of any way to prevent this 100%. Maybe you could add a perch right next to the food bowl to see if he'll stand there to eat rather than on the edge of the bowl (if that's what he's doing)?
@mimthyss4 жыл бұрын
@@xStaticSumi I agree with this! A perch next to the bowl could really help. Also, maybe you could try to watch him and observe, see why he's pooping in his bowl. If he doesn't eat with you around then you could set up your phone as a camera or something maybe, see if you can catch what's going on there. Maybe he just likes to cause trouble hehe. Just make sure you keep checking his bowl regularly so you can clean it quickly, to reduce chance of him eating his own poop on his food... 💀 Oooh also! Maybe if you have a platform perch you could put your food on there, OP? Like, if it's chop you can just put it on there in the corner or something instead. probably much more messy but saves the poop getting on it. Or just feed them outside their cage on a table like a person, he could have his very own breakfast bowl and dinner plate xD or just take out the bowl from in his cage, fill it, and then put it down on a table and let him come eat it over there. Idk tbh!

@mimthyss4 жыл бұрын
@@estefania530 also be aware of bar spacing!!! It's good to get as big a cage as possible but it's no good buying a macaw cage for a cockatiel because the bar spacing is much too big. They'll try to squeeze through the bars and either escape or get stuck 😥 and of course, you don't want the bar spacing to be too tiny either haha. Something to keep in mind!

Thanks for this! I'm upgrading my budgie pair to a flight cage in a few days and this is giving me good inspiration. I do have a question maybe someone can answer... I've bought a few natural wood perches that are very long and have attachment points on either end. They're meant to span across the whole cage but I was wondering if I should maybe saw them in half so I can get two perches for the price of one. Is there any reason why a long/more stable perch would be better than two shorter perches? Right now the long perches I have are about 25" long and the cage I'm getting is 32" long and 21" deep so I'm not sure the long perches will fit in there super well.
@FlockTalk4 жыл бұрын
There’s no major benefit to long perches, if it was a travel cage then the stability would be a benefit but otherwise there’s no major benefits for it. The only thing I’d watch for is that the perch isn’t so heavy that it could bend the bars when only using one connection point.

Not only have you been doing this long before Corona, but you're highly educated in regards to the birds in your care and have ambitions to be a bird veterinarian. A pox on the phonies! At the very least they should come up with original content, don't you think? Love the video of Mia bathing., Watch it at breaktime at work almost every day. 👍❤️👍👍❤️❤️

I didn't know much (about parrots), so I started looking around. Online there is SOOOOOOO much bad / incorrect / un educated / DATED information on parrots it is astounding. I even checked out a book in the local library on budgies, that was full of dated misinformation, it was sad. I stumbled across some avian vet resources, along with this channel, BirdTricks, and Live Laugh Birds. I felt ready to get some budgies (after 3 months of weeding out good from the bad info). I pre ordered everything they would need, then had to go to a petsmart to buy some budgies (no breeders anywhere in my area). I asked for 2 males, and they gave me 2 females. I still love them though. I still made some mistakes as well. Like the cage I got (much to high, I didn't see information about flight cages till after the fact, but am upgrading now). I also had to learn with trial and error on getting them converted over to pellets / veggies, at the time, I didn't see any info on how to do that. It did take me a few months of saving up, and buying things over time. Now they have a ton of toys. Many of them DIY ideas from this channel :D I even made a shallow foraging box for the bottom of my cockatiels cage (it only goes in for a few hours a day), with some of her DIY toys inside to forage around. My cockatiel loves it, when my budgies let him LOL!
