I always say to my students what I've heard from Marcelo Garcia years ago. No matter what position you're in, it could be top, mount , side control, guard or standing up, whatever it is, never accept a grip on the collar. Stop everything you're doing and take it out. Worked great for me since then.

Fight #1 (last one shown). That guy is the definition of class. If you’re not familiar with judo/jj, the way he laid that guy down on the mat was as gentle as could be. He even held on to his opponent’s leg to make sure that he rolled properly to avoid injury. Obviously he knew that his opponent was already out, so he set him down on the mat gently. And after he won, the humble expression on his face was as if he felt bad for defeating the other guy. No showboating or macho BS, Total class.

My 15 yr old grey belt has earned the respect of numerous upper belts because he has become very good with the loop choke. He is 135 lbs and guys were using heavy pressure and strength to torment him at class. He has learned how to do it with a loose collar grip with the guys forehead on his chest. Pretty cool variation. I hear guys tell him all the time before a roll "no loop chokes". Lol. I have seen him lock it in with his foot when someone goes for a double under. Crazy. But it is a great equalizer once he got really good with it.

I retired out of World and International judo tournaments where I was blessed to compete against and attend Judo & BJJ Blackbelt UFC Champion *Marcus "Conan" Silvia's* BJJ Dojo on Miami Beach after fighting him for several months at the regional Miami Dade Community College Judo Tournaments. I know he is a cousin to Royce and the Gracie family but not in the immediate family. The Gracie's often when visiting came to his dojo. Prior to fighting him, I was on the USA National Team in Colorado placing in the top 3 of the country , ranked internationally and in my earlier under 18 years rated in the top 3 in jr. Olympics several times. Mr. Silvia's coach asked me to be a training partner of his for UFC tournaments so I agreed. Being on the national team, I did learn many new advanced techniques that I never seen before nor had it done on me so I was blessed to learn them. When I went to become his training partner, from Day #2, I was learning these loop chokes very well thanks to his coach and him. I later used these in judo tournaments and they proved to be a great asset on a national and state level for sure. It has been years since my last tournament and all I could do is teach children now due to a major life changing injury. A few of my students I aim to take all the way to the top as I have done many times prior with such champions as Christina Vasquez (Former world champion silver medalist) , Ruben Felder ( World Champion Bronze Medalist) and Felix Roder Muiltiple Jr. Olympic Gold & National Gold Medalist. I had many more but these are 3 I brought up from white belts who dominated their divisions.

In #1, itis especially nice because grabbing his leg like that started all kind of veins and vessels slow down and stop what they doing, and as a result, with the leg trapped he could actually stand up with the body, and if there was any life left, imagine the slam, instead he set him down gentally. A very, very elegant process and brilliantly executed. You can tell that other guy was a master, but totally unprepared for the instant he was bent in addition, to the loop collar. I actually saw that match before looking at your video. Very skillfull execution. I want that guy on my team!

I maybe wrong but I believe it's not what you consider choking like cutting off air flow but rather cutting off blood flow to the brain and your brain shuts your body down quick to preserve oxygen whenever that happens.

I remember the first loop choke I got hit with as a white belt...I thought I was being all slick, letting this higher level blue belt's forearm rest against my neck, just WAITING for him to reach under with the other hand for the cross choke, so I could defend it. Then I saw him reach up with the other hand on the same side, felt it go over my head and BAM! I swear I could TASTE my throat, it was so tight! (Is that what she said?? Ah, anyway...) He called it The McNasty, because it was quick and nasty, and quick and nasty it was! (I believe that may ALSO be what she said, just fyi) 😆

Same here, but the choke was slightly different. I was sempai'ing for Sensei Ron Vowel, out of Carbondale, Ks, back in the early '90s. As a Nidan in Shudokan karate, I was teaching the karate side of the curriculum - Ron, a Sandan at the time (I believe) taught the judo side (Ron was a many-time tournament champion). Ron, as a note of interest, was a deacon at the church my wife and I attended. Ron also taught a private, Christian-themed judo class at his home. Ron used judo as a means of furthering his goals in bringing souls to the Lord; and as a component of his judo classes, there was a pre-class, one-half hour round-robin prayer, and another one-half hour warm-up routine; then, we got busy. In one of the classes, I was rolling as the uke that day and Ron was demonstrating a from-behind triangle technique. I was in the sitting position as he placed himself behind me and locked into the triangle position. As he was instructing the class on the proper application of the technique - I'm just sitting there listening - he begins to slap the crap out of me from behind! I'm thinking like . . . dude, wtf! It quickly became apparent that he had choked me out - and was simply, lightly slapping the side of my head to reawaken my passed-out self. :)
