If they remake it, they should pull an ooe with it in where the entire castle ressurects once you get to the ritual room. Where you'd have to travel through 4 more areas before facing dracula himself. And also not make him a pushover who's weak to either the sacred fire or golden knife.

Instead of the hard time limit of 7 in-game days, make it so that there's an optional challenge with the good ending locked behind it, sort of like all the metroidvania titles. Maybe they could keep the 7 day thing just for an extra post-credits scene or something.

@Dekomata a fan remake did this already and just personally I feel like it totally misses the point just to repeat something we've already done before. The castle being destroyed and empty with the eerie music playing as it builds up to you reviving dracula is a much better fit for the game and much more interesting imo than "yet another run through the castle". I don't even like it in OoE tbh, though at least there it's not out of place like it would he in Castlevania 2.

Sadly she was made non-canon or alternatively, stuck in an alternate universe as Lament of Innocence became the actual first Belmont in the main timeline IGA wrote. So we don't have a quarter-vampire growing up to be a vampire hunter. While the game isn't on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, Castlevania Legends IS on NSO.

I'm really pleased Revisited keeps the reworked jump from Adventure Rebirth where you can alter the arc until you commit to an attack. I've said it's the best change to Castlevania's formula for years and I'm glad it's back.

@@Yoni123 It was a badass remake of another not so great CV game, Castlevania The Adventure for Gameboy, that was released as WiiWare on the Wii. However, it was delisted and nowadays the Wii shop has been long closed.

The fact that the collection which got both of those games came out exclusively for PS4 around the time Simon, Richter and so much Castlevania content was announced for Smash including Alucard assist is one of the biggest missed opportunities to capitalize on a perfect chance to bring those classics to other consoles. What was Konami thinking? I mean even Square Enix made history by putting FF7 on a cartridge for the Switch.

The fact that Konami published first 2D Castlevania in 15 years just blows my mind. And they choose to remake the worst one and make it actually good... Also, yes it's made by M2, but I don't think "the same team" can be applied here. It was so long ago that probably almost none of the staff who did Wii games still working in this company.

Haunted Castle Revisited is a VAST improvement over the original version in so many ways: -The ridiculously cheap difficulty of the original is thrown out in favor of a more reasonable difficulty that is challenging, but mostly fair. -There are generous checkpoints at the beginning of each section of a level, and losing a life or using a continue has you restarting at those checkpoints. -You have unlimited continues, as opposed to only having a handful of continues in the original version. -(Spoiler warning) If you die during the second phase of the final battle, you restart at the second phase-even if you use a continue-rather than having to fight through the first phase of the battle. Overall, M2 really knocked it out of the park with Haunted Castle Revisited: it offers a tough, but reasonable, challenge; it respects the player's time, and it's everything the original Haunted Castle should have been. Here's to hoping that M2 will someday get the chance to make a completely new Castlevania game in this style...they clearly have what it takes to develop such a game! I really enjoyed my time with Haunted Castle Revisited, and I plan on checking out the rest of the games in the Castlevania Dominus Collection right after I finish Emio the Smiling Man!

Also, those skeleton's walk cycles are hilarious... I can imagine them holding a boom box over their shoulders as they're jamming in the streets to their funky beats.

I would say that Haunted Castle's existence was mostly redeemed by that sublime symphonic choir remix of "Cross Your Heart" in Smash. That said, I'm glad they took the time to make it a better title with this remake... although Simon's new staircase animation is weeeird.

Lament of Innocence was pretty good, and I wish I had gotten to playing Curse of Darkness beyond a demo disc; it's too pricey to get a physical copy off eBay so hopefully they bring it back as a digital release. I figure if they continue the Castlevania collections, we'll end up with maybe 3 more. I could see them bundling Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness as a two-pack, like the Requiem collection that had Rondo and Symphony... And doing the same with 64 and Legacy of Darkness. And then the final pack can be a sort of "Lost Stories" collection, with Vampire Killer, Legends, Adventure ReBirth, and Judgement. And then if you enter the Konami code forward, backward, and upside-down, you can unlock the light-whip arcade game, that you can't actually play because the motion control inputs would be too janky to function.

So the main games missing at this point are Vampire Killer, Castlevania Chronicles, Castlevania Legends, and Kid Dracula for Gameboy. These could be collected alongside the N64 games, then the PS2 games could be their own collection maybe with Judgment just to be weird about it? I'd also like to see a re-release of Dracula X Chronicles, but that probably won't leave Sony systems for the foreseeable future. Either include Rebirth in that first collection, or maybe do a dedicated Rebirth collection with the other WiiWare titles.

25 bucks (or 20 pounds here in UK) is pretty good for legally playing the three DS games on non-Nintendo hardware and on big screens. Haunted Castle by itself wouldn't be much of a bonus as it's bad, but it's inclusion justifying it's own brand new remake be included too? Good value package all round.

The Christian coffins that the mummies are in come directly from OG Haunted Castle. One of my favorite KZbinrs (who's unfortunately no longer active), The Fragnostic, did a LP of Haunted Castle and had a hilarious bit about those coffins. His theory was that the mummies got wind that Lara Croft was coming to raid their pyramid, and Dracula agreed to let them crash at his place until it blew over, but he only had coffins with crosses for them and not proper sarcophagi. So that is now my headcanon for that weird incongruity.

I do feel like castlevania would do super well with a soulsborne style of gameplay. methodical study of enemy and boss patterns, good enemy drops, an inter connected map like DS1 or maybe Bloodborne like Quicker reactional combat.

The Whip Power Ups function the following: You start of with the Typical Leather Whip, that was the Form the Whip took back in its Day of Creation. The First Power Up permamently upgrades it into the Morningstar-Chain Whip and Doubles your damage all the way until you go game over - basically its version of the Super Mushroom that makes Mario Twice as Big The Second Upgrade gives it the longer chain and the Platin Tip. It temporarly Doubles the damage AGAIN until it ran out or until you get hit. So better go Rampage for as long as you have that second Upgrade The game is also very forgiving with game overs, it lets you restart at ths last Checkpoint, but your score gets deleted.

I want a castlevania where the castle is like this giant living ecosystem with its own peoples that live inside it, kind of like Labyrinth, where not every creature inside it is evil and following Dracula 100%. Essentially like a complex and complicated world inside the castle, with odd fantasy villages and settlements, lots of factions and creatures that might be on your side, might just be trying to get by, etc. rather than just an endless horde of baddies

25:44 Whipping Dr. Frankenstein's skeleton to stop Big Frank from charging is an entirely new mechanic (and a much-appreciated bit of Old School problem-solving, if I say so myself)! As a veteran of the original Haunted Castle, I can tell you matter-of-factly that Frankenstein's Monster didn't have that charging attack in the original; he just had the "thump a bunch of falling blocks out of the ceiling" attack and the chain-thrashing attack. The table and Dr. Frankenstein's skeleton were in the original, but they were just background dressing; they didn't really do anything, unlike now. Isn't this Revisited remake *_gorgeous?_* 😄

This team really has a knack for taking shitty, forgotten Castlevania games and remaking them into absolute gems. They really do need to re-release Adventure Rebirth. It doesn't even need to be part of a fancy collection or anything. They could just plop it on the digital stores for like 5 bucks and call it a day.

I played the original 1987 arcade game its was just as BRUTAL as the Ghouls and Ghosts arcade game ie nearly impossible I never made it to Medusa the 2nd stage boss of the Haunted Castle arcade game without a game over.

I hate how the old Castlevania health bar outright LIES. They give you 16 bars but almost *every* attack takes off 2 bars of health. You have 7 hits worth of mistakes on a single life which *seems* generous but when you're as slow and immobile as Simon is being locked to stairs and jumping angles you cannot avoid hits easily or at all.

This is the 3rd dedicated Castlevania Collection, but BEFORE the 1st collection came out, Konami released one based on some of their Arcade Games... and Haunted Castle was one of the games included, yeah... Haunted Castle Revisited is (sorta speaking) The "Castlevania Rebirth 2", as yup, M2 did the job for Adventure Rebirth on Wii... as well as the other two games of the Rebirth "Trilogy?" (Contra and Gradius)... by the way, Haunted Castle by default in the Arcade Collection is the Hardocre USA release, while in Dominus Collection is the not so hardcore JPN version, both of them have the option to give the middle finger to the limited continues setting that the original version had without being able to change that. Edit: The Frankenstein gimmick on Revisited doesn't exists in the original Arcade version, also, 2nd Phase Dracula is more menacing in Revisited vs the lame fight you get in the original Arcade, by the way... due to how the checkpoint system works in Revisited... Dracula is much easier as you get a checkpoint for Phase 2, and the checkpoints aren't lost when you use a continue (assuming you have the option enabled of course), meaning that ALSO stages are somewhat easier despite having just barely enough time to beat them when you play flawlessly for a 1-live run for each stage.

I would put haunted castle remake in the upper echelons of the classicvanias. I still think Rondo is the best classicvania but this is very up there. I haven't played rebirth.

For the collection you forgot Requiem which is the Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the night collection and for the 3d you can find a demo playable of Resurrection online, that was the Sonia Belmont game for Dreamcast that never got released. I could see a 3d collection with: 64, Legacy of Darkness, Lament of innocence, curse of darkness and releasing officially the demo of Resurrection as the bonus.

I would love to have Castlevania Requiem on Steam. Which has Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood, but I am uncertain considering it was exclusive on PS4 in collaboration with Sony. Maybe they can release them but with Castlevania Adventure Rebirth as a plus too.

Idea for spooky season maybe - ranking all the Castlevania characters (or games?), as someone who has never really played any of them - could be a neat overview of the franchise. Especially given as you've posited - a new game entry isn't entirely inconceivable anymore. Seems like komani are attempting a redemption arc, and as much reason we have to give them shit - it would be nice to see their old IP back in action with real actual games.

I continue to be forced to respect Konami (in this one instance) for doing what I'm constantly saying game companies should do: remake their bad games instead of their good ones. Because of this, I still think that if any Castlevania game should get a big remake next, it should be 64. I know its gotten a revamp in the public eye recently, and it definitely isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, but its still undeniable that it could be done better and could really benefit from a remake
