Food and water stop being an issue as soon as you get to a greenhouse, which is the third POI the quests direct you to. It will give you the blueprints and resources to farm plants for food and other purposes, which is a major gameplay mechanic. I think the game could do a somewhat better job of encouraging rapid progression through the first few POIs to help get the player to a self-sufficient state earlier; once you know how the game starts, you can get food growing in your first hour or so, but newer players don't know what to focus on, and tend to get distracted by shipbuilding and other stuff and run into starvation problems. (PS: You can cook rotten food to make it safe to eat, but it isn't very nutritious and you also need it for crafting.)

He should spent some time gathering much more stuff and making what he needs for his engines and for food and drink especially fuel to power his engines he will need to make enough food and drink and find a way to preserve it
