Florence calls the deeper vocal fry voice the "monster voice". It's the voice of her ego/talent/drive to perform, and it's all over this album. A lot of the songs are about the pandemic, the isolation, and the introspection that happened when Florence was left alone with nobody to perform for.

It's weird, I love every song (apart from My Love), and Cassandra is nearly great but I just think the chorus is quite weak, and kinda pulls the song down which is a shame because the rest is amazing.

You're definitely right about florence being the type of person that takes partying too far - her alcoholism + addiction issues were really intense. She's spoken about how if she continued it would have killed her because it was just all or nothing. I remember reading an article where she talked about her parents crying scared she was going to join the 27 club. She's been sober for years now, I'm really glad we didn't lose her, but it did make me realize just how young a lot of the artists that have died from it really were. Elvis died on the toilet from his drug addiction when he was still relatively young.

Florence was actually the way I discovered you and I’m so glad you took the journey to discover more of her music. I feel a huge connection with her because I feel like I’m understood listening to her songs. She has a way with lyrics that really strikes me on a personal level and then when I read and hear what she has to say about the songs, I’m like “wow, I feel that, I’ve been there before” so it’s very cathartic. Themes of anxiety and how she references relationships with substance abuse really hit home. I could go on all day. It’s strangely beautiful when songs make you feel understood. And I honestly love your energy. Florence brought me here but it’s your spirit that’s kept me here. Thank you 🙏🏻 sending lots of well wishes

Fantastic review Fern! I 100% agree with every point, thought, process that went into the making of this stunning record that you highlighted. It's funny for me cause I found your channel through F+TM music and i've watched all your reaction videos for each of their previous albums. Through each of your reviews you've given me a new perspective on certain songs that in a way, brought new life into the songs for me. Clearly your musical background is doing wonders for the likes of us that haven't a clue haha. I remember your review for Ceremonials where you described Florences' sudden high and low register for Never Let Me Go as waves crashing and slowing and that imagery blew me away cause it made total sense to me as to why Florence made those choices because she obviously was trying to illustrate the sound of the ocean through her voice (beautifully so.) You were right on the money with that one. Amazing work, can't wait to see more. And I too, need a Florence poster for my wall asap!

Oh this is brilliant, Fern! Listening with you made me connect with the album even more. I just was able to get tickets to see Florence + The Machine this September and I'm so excited! It'll be the first show I've been to in 5 years and I'm going with one of my closest friends! (Btw, Flo said in her interview with Zane Lowe that this album might be her last before she gives herself an actual break so if you want and it works for you to get tickets, I'd highly recommend buying them ASAP). My city already has more than half of the stadium seats sold. Also, I hope you continue to be supported to share what you truly think and feel about the music you experience. It's always okay to not like or connect with music, too, and while I hope that people love music I love--hearing different perspectives can be just as fun and even educational. So sorry about how some people have made you feel pressured about your singing or what artists you cover or make a video for. I watch your channel (even though I don't always comment--I'm sorry I'll work on that!) because I respect you and your thoughts and also love to jam out with you (you have a captivating voice!). 46:24 my favorite example of this is her writing the first few tracks of the album right before covid. "back in town" before she had to go home because of lockdown and the direct "SOMETHING'S COMING" in choreomania. she's talked about this before in her book useless magic. she says the song knows what's going to happen and she only knows what it was saying when it happens, it's very interesting

Would you ever consider reacting to some of Florence's old b-sides? :) She has some amazing ones like " Ye Old Hope " and " Throwing Bricks " and honestly I'm so disappointed to hear that about Aurora's fanbase. I used to be a fan of hers, though a mixture of me falling out of love with her music and just finding her . . . insincere has kind of put me off. Ironically one of the things being how AVIDLY she likes to push herself away from the Florence comparisons. She has kind of done so in a way that is kind of insulting to Florence, but also it's not even true because she replied to me YEARS ago - On Facebook ( wow long time ago ) back before Katy Perry had even shared her video for " Running With the Wolves " ( which was her fame launcher ) where I said something like.... " You probably won't see this, but it's nice to send a message in a bottle. I've been obsessed with your music. You, ( someone else I forget ) and Florence Welch have been ALL that has been on my playlist lately. " To which she responded something like " Oh wow that is beautiful and so flattering ( the message in a bottle bit ) , that's such a compliment. Florence is such an inspiration. " now I guess that could mean IN GENERAL like just in music and maybe not TO HER but she is so avid to be that pretentious girl who is like " I only enjoy obscure artists. They're the only ones who influence me. " now and it really turned me off from watching her lives.
