My favorite trait of Florence is that her lyrics are the most poetic and biblical pieces of prose, and in interviews she'll just chuckle and be all, "Yeah that one's about a real nasty hangover." Even in writing songs about writer's block while in quarantine, she remains the same grandoise artist she always was.

LOVE this. She's singing about her struggling with writer's block (an issue LOTS of artists, known and unknown, deal or have dealt with). I also notice she's referring how the world (and hers, in a way) changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit: 1. "All my friends are getting ill"-a likely reference to folks closest to her contracting the virus. 2 "My arms/skies/billboards/buildings emptied"-probably referring to her not being able to hug/touch anyone due to social distancing; airports shut down; artists/performers/entertainers not being able to perform on stage (hence her singing to a room of lifelike but inanimate mannequins. The mannequins standing in the back look more somber and...expired. Could they represent the folks who lost their lives to the virus or other personal struggles as the pandemic serving as the catalyst...?); buildings not in use or even closed due to folks working remote (or even lost their jobs) as a result of the pandemic. This may also just be my overthinking the video: but I also think the room she is singing in refers to her being "stuck in the house" (it's the only setting in the video). Because she is in a place where she can't necessarily "move", all of the vices she struggled with (alcohol and/or drugs, loneliness, perhaps depression, uncertainties, etc) seem to be also conflicting with her "love", which could be a reference to her passion for music/art/poetry, and perhaps even her determination to stay sober. I do believe the women dancing around her in the video could represent two things: 1. Personal conflicts and struggles she was constantly juggling during the pandemic to the point that it drove her a bit "insane" (cabin fever, or possibly making her a bit out of touch with interacting with folks. The temptation to relapse may have also been more difficult for her to manage during lockdown). 2. Her ideas that she couldn't seem to organize in her head (either music lyrics, or other creative ideas). I honestly do believe writer's block just isn't "not writing anything". You could have a plethora of things written down, but you just can't seem to organize them or have them make sense. It's completely understandable and relatable (another reason why I think folks are beguiled by her-including myself.) I also noticed the way she's breathing during the video. At the beginning, it's pretty labored (possibly because she's anxious, frustrated or upset about something); at the end, her breathing is a bit more steady and calm-like she found her "center" of some sort, or perhaps even an idea has occurred to her (the lamps in the background in the dark ("empty pages"-ayyyyyyy 😉) could possibly represent ideas/song lyrics coming to her. Maybe it was this song. 😊). The fact that she wrote a song about struggling with writers' block WHILE struggling with writers' block goes to show me how much she has honed her craft. She's simply magnificent.

the heavy breath at the end, all the people immovilized with open mouths, are covid references. All friends gone, mouths open trying to survive the intubation. At the end, everyone is gone, her dancers fading away. She lives, heavily breathing, blackened out and giving out this song.

@@aynosekeponer Isn't it interesting how the most tragic or disheartening occurrences can be an influence to such an awesome record? I can't seem to find the exact word to describe how much I eerily enjoyed watching this tragically intriguing video and pulling it apart. Despite the glitz and glamor of the video (which I believe, in itself, is portrayed as "artificial". Behind all the fancy clothes and being done up, EVERYONE is a mannequin (something else is layered there I think, hehehe...probably in regards to EVERYONE having to be on lockdown, despite their social status...🤔🧐)), there is an absolute heaviness and darkness to it. Despite the upbeat tempo of the record, the lyrics are frustrating and sorrowful. Even with Florence saying she "hopes" the trees get leaves soon, she could possibly be referring to her clearing her writers' block or even the hopes of being able to witness a change in the weather (lockdown-March 13th from my own experience-occurred 1 week JUST before Spring Solstice (March 21). This lyric could possibly have also been a tongue-in-cheek retort as she is probably irate at the fact of being in lockdown and not being able to "see the daylight" or watch the weather change-another thing LOTS of folks can relate to, imho). In the midst of tragedy, grief, personal struggles, any sort of ordeal...I do believe Ms. Welch is advising us to dance...wherever the hell we may be at 😊 This could very well be the "Shake It Out" of 2022, imho.

“My Love” is the third single from Florence + the Machine’s fifth studio album, Dance Fever. According to a press release, “My Love” was originally written and recorded as an acoustic track described by Florence as a “sad little poem,” that recounts Welch experiencing writer’s block and having a hard time adjusting to a world shifted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The song was later transformed by producer Dave Bayley into the energetic track that it is. Announced on March 9, only a day prior to its debut, “My Love” was released just three days after “Heaven Is Here,” the album’s previous single, accompanied by its music video and Dance Fever’s pre-sale. The song simultaneously premiered on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast with Greg James.

Florence and The Machine: "Sometimes the biggest dance songs, I think, have a really sad core to them." "I wrote it I think in one of the first lockdowns, one of the really long ones. The poem I wrote was like ‘tell me where to put my love’, tell me where to put this feeling that I’ve had my whole life and if the stage and performance doesn’t come back I don’t know what I will do with this feeling, this sadness, the alchemy of dance music is turned into something so euphoric, and the release was exactly what I needed. I remember the first demo we had going home and dancing to it alone in my kitchen, it just gave me a moment of release. It’s been a really nice bridge between a lot of old work, because I felt like a part of myself I actually hadn’t touched on maybe since Ceremonials, so it’s been really nice to then go back and look at older work and bring those back into the set. That song has been just an amazing bridge throughout all the songs in the last 11 years."

Listening to the acoustic version after hearing this one first is a weird experience though. Seems like this should be “original”.

@@juyla100 Thanks for sharing that interview. I've not heard that one. Love the image of Florence dancing to this song alone in her kitchen. I feel I could listen to her talk all day. She always seems so genuine while waxing existential or delving into the far corners of her very unique mind. It never seems pretentious or condescending to me.

3:12 that exclamation sounds so much like Lungs and Ceremonials. So glad she's going back towards the bombastic sounds again. HBHBHB was the best combination between bombastic and intimate she's had while High As Hope was too consistently soft for my tastes. It was pretty but there was none of the explosive high energy songs like Drumming Song, Spectrum, or Queen of Peace. June was probably the closest that album got but it was more atmospheric than bombastic. Glad she seems to be going back towards that HBHBHB balance!

I feel her music and presence touches us to our most deep and primal levels. This song made me cry once more, moved me so much, because we all felt that stillness she is singing about.

❤️ I was always able to write my way out Song always made sense to me Now I find that when I look down Every page is empty There is nothing to describe Except the moon still bright against the worrying sky I pray the trees will get their leaves soon So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does? I don't know where to put my love And when it came, it was stranger than I had ever imagined No cracking open of heaven But quiet and still (all my friends are getting ill) So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does? I don't know where to put my love So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does? I don't know where to put my love My arms emptied, the skies emptied The billboards emptied My arms emptied, the skies emptied The buildings emptied So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does? I don't know where to put my love So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does?
