“King” lyrics
We argue in the kitchen about whether to have children
About the world ending and the scale of my ambition
And how much is art really worth
The very thing you’re best at
Is the thing that hurts the most
But you need your rotten heart
Your dazzling pain like diamond rings
You need to go to war to find material to sing
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I need my golden crown of sorrow
My bloody sword to swing
My empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
But a woman is a changeling
Always shifting shape
Just when you think you have it figured out
Something new begins to take
What strange claws are these
Scratching at my skin
I never knew my killer would be coming from within
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I need my golden crown of sorrow
My bloody sword to swing
I need my empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
Cos I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
And I was never as good
as I always thought I was
But I knew how to dress it up
I was never satisfied, it never let me go
Just dragged me by my hair
and back on with the show

“I am no mother, I am no bride, I am king” the scream of every woman who is tired of being tied to a role but has something inside of her, telling her, “ this isn’t for you, this isn’t you, you will always crave something powerful, you are meant for bigger skies”.

This song is like the perfect culmination of all of their previous work... The dark lyrics from Lungs. The harps and "Breaking down" drum pattern from Ceremonials. The horns from HBHBHB. The controlled, subdued vocals and matured delivery from High As Hope. An instant favorite for me 👏🏽

I'm now in Kyiv, Ukraine. I stopped listening to music, so I could hear sirens and identify explosions nearby. But... On the fourth day of that I suddenly bumped in this video. I decided to spend some time on it. I don't know, if I will be alive tomorrow, so I want to write those words here for you, Florence. I want you to know, that your songs and your voice helped me to stay strong with all demons inside me, when I was teen. And now I am adult, I have to protect my country from real demons, from those, who kill peaceful people, my brothers and sisters. I'm all in this situation. Thank you for these minutes of calmness. I appreciate that.

You deserve to be loved, you deserve to be treated well and respected, to be listened to; you deserve to have good things in your life, and to know happiness. Don't let anybody tell you or treat you differently. Only you know what goes on behind closed doors, and it is your responsibility to treat yourself well and choose what you think is best for you, because only you, deep down, really know the answers to what really is best for you. Others might want to make the choices for you, but only you will have to bear the weight of consequence, so choose wisely for yourself and choose with love and care. You are very brave for stepping up and standing up for yourself. I am proud of you. It's time to be free. To "shake it out", drop the chains and fly. I am so proud, and so happy that you are on your way to ending this dark chapter of your life, and opening up room for new and exciting things! You are amazing! Look for people and things that make you feel this way, because it's true! You've survived so much, you deserve to be surrounded by goodness. The dog days are over, baby!:) It's time to shine, and let yourself be free!^^ All the love and all the best

This song could not have come at the most perfect time for me. I can relate so much to this. I’m 37 and coming to the realization the society and biological expectations are decisions echoeing in my head on a regular basis and I have no desire at this moment to pursue them. I have great ambitions of traveling and freedom but a small part of me will always wonder if I will be giving up something that I will never have. Should I settle down or should I continue to roam free? My desire and my ambition says to roam free... I am no mother, I am no bride, I am KING.

When she sings "But you need your rotten heart, Your dazzling pain like diamond rings, You need to go to war to find material to sing" it reminds me how us artists often lean on pain to create meaningful art. Reading the interpretations that some have given of this song, I'm surprised to find that I've been interpreting it the exact opposite way. I didn't see it as someone devoting herself to her craft over starting a family- I saw it as someone who's always devoted herself to her craft, but now she wants to start a family and she's trying to reconcile that desire with the same desire to be free and keep creating. Florence said about the song: "As an artist, I never actually thought about my gender that much, I just got on with it. I was as good as the men and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my 30s and the future, I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires. That to be a performer, but also to want a family might not be as simple for me as it is for my male counterparts. I had modelled myself almost exclusively on male performers, and for the first time I felt a wall come down between me and my idols as I have to make decisions they did not." In this context, it seemed like "I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King" was a sort of mantra, something she kept telling herself as she tried to fit this masculine mold. Wanting to be recognized as a woman but also seen as equivalent to the men in her field, to the point where she models herself after them and tries to be "one of the boys." But wanting a family alongside a career sets her apart from the men around her, because many men can't bear children themselves and don't have to worry about whether they'll be able to have children in the future, from a biological standpoint. Not to mention the social stigma- for women, it's almost always framed as a choice between being tied down and stuck in a traditional role (ie starting a family), fulfilling the mother archetype, or to be free and answer to no one (ie pursuing your art), fulfilling the "strong, independent woman" archetype. But what if you want both of these things? There's nothing inherently shameful about either one. You can have a family and still devote time to your art. I think most men don't get to make this choice as often, or at any rate it doesn't carry as much weight for them. So, I dunno- I think it could be empowering towards those independent women who pursue a career above all else, and as such a woman myself, I'm very grateful to have a song that can be interpreted this way. But I also think it could be about wanting both paths, about how there's nothing wrong with embracing marriage and motherhood, even as a confident performer who makes music for a living. Either way, it's such a radical song and I really love it. This album is going to be great.

I agree 100% with your comment above, that was my take on the song as well! It seems to me as a constant struggle between what you have, want and should want; it resonates closely to me for the same reasons. Florence is just a complete masterpice.

I'm in Russia now. I have roots from another country, I am a very young girl who recently got the right to vote. and I never gave a voice to this president, although I was ready to listen to him - just why, maybe he want to be artist too and carry dead artistic body inside? his childhood? just what? but he took off his mask so fast now. none of my friends and acquaintances and their circle knows people who would vote for him. I never feel there like home. people are sooo bright, but terror was right in the ground. at first, the whole world was closed to me because of the virus, but I found a warm wound inside me during the crisis and a hard diamond in my stomach, around which I wrapped my whole body. for a long time I denied the creative fire in humiliation, then I recognized it and began to carry and hide it in a boat from my hands. I just started taking care of it, and it grew like a flower. on cold ground, and my first family - not children and husband, but parents were a difficult barrier. then the illness of my body, the recovery, the virus around. I have always registered how cold the soil of this state is for any creative person. I have met a lot of war in subtle edges, words, in attempts to separate the spirit of people, to take each person apart inside themselves, to kill the imagination. now, in a flood of horror, I cooked dinner for my mom. I don't blame her anymore, it's past, meaningless. I want carry her like a child. I'm not afraid death. only the knowledge that someone is afraid of my death slows me down. and I can't eat myself now, and suddenly I was walking on the edge of the world and found a new Florence's song. and the hours and month before that I thought so much. these were tender, destructive, wild, and childish thoughts, I cried myself and found the answer myself to catch on and climb higher. besides my personality, thinking about every personality in society. and now I'm sitting down and being completely electrified by thoughts, I can clearly hear in this chorus how the president of this state rejoices that he is not a mother with her dead sons, and not a bride, but king kong. I imagine him bald and angry in a veil. and I see Florence, who so beautifully took on the voice of all this. for me, these lines just can't sound any different now. I hope that soon my problems will be creativity and family again, and not that the state is becoming a policeman, wants to become an authoritarian dictatorship, and in their opinion I should not even know about the possibility of wanting to be like Florence or like Tori. but they won't destroy my inner center. their plan has failed

What a fascinating reading of new masterpieces. Congratulations! So, the recipe to combine musical creativity with motherhood and family includes (or consists of) breaking man's neck and dragging lifeless body to the presumed grave? Being a proud energetic woman "pursuing a career above all else" as you are, you should focus on establishing wedding shops and halls chain, playfully combined with funeral business, another highly profitable enterprise. Witchy music is my specialty, probably my main passion, so I’d love to make some band recommendations to you since it seems to make you happy, too. First of all, I absolutely have to tell you about the ‘60s band Coven, fronted by Esther “Jinx” Dawson. Although Ronnie James Dio took the credit, it was actually Coven that introduced the Sign of the Horns 🤘 to the musical world. And now I have to tell you about the 21st century occult rock revival that revived the spirit of Coven. There are many great bands in this movement. I’m just going to name my top six favorite bands of all time (all of which formed within the last sixteen years) for now, though: - *Thundermother* (not a witchy band per se, but a great all-female band that I just had to mention-don’t worry, we’ll get on to the witches again now) - *Jess and the Ancient Ones* - *The Oath* - *The Bridge City Sinners* - *Blood Ceremony* - *Twin Temple* I’d love to hear what you think of these bands :)

Some times I think, motherhood has been taken off the pedestal on purpose and it's almost a crime that some of the most beautiful and talented people who are so self governing will never reproduce. We have created a world in where it could be argued moral not to have children because of the state we have inherited and left things in. Sometimes I think holding onto the flame and seeing the silver lining is the most beautiful thing there is, and all that really matters. I think as we become oldies the decision matters more. We have about twice as many successful female ancestors than male ancestors and that's because they became mothers. You have to establish what the meaning of personal victory is for your self. The law of Nature only has one answer and the final say.

Damn this hurts. Everyone's talking about Florence declaring herself king and how powerful it is... but I can't help but feel the lyrics are actually just a conversation between her and her partner, then her and herself. Her partner wants to have children, but she is trying to figure out what she wants. Maybe she always wanted kids, to be a mother. But she's realizing that her art, music, and career she will have to make a choice male artists don't. She has to make the difficult decision about whether or not to actually have children. Especially in the beginning paragraph they're debating whether it's even good to have kids, with the world as it is. I know these conversations and fears. I've had them with my spouse. The ending lyrics don't really sound empowering either. It feels like she just gave up and goes back on with the show. Even though she feels a bit defeated, like the decision was made for her. Dunno. I'll have to listen to more of the album to piece this together but this doesn't feel empowering to me. This just feels like inner turmoil. :(

This is so damn good. I wonder if she was in any way inspired by Elizabeth I’s speech “I have the heart and stomach of a king.” Elizabeth I was in part able to rule successfully by leaving behind femininity in many ways, as womanhood was (and still is) seen as incompatible with power and ambition. Many of Florence’s lyrics reminded me of her speech and life. I.e., Elizabeth was able to maintain power and pursue ambitions by not marrying and being a virgin in the eyes of the public (“I am no mother, I am no bride”). As Florence said in an interview, it’s a lot harder for a woman to have everything she might want. If she wants a career and to build a family, it’s so much more difficult. One way to be a successful woman as you get older and people assume you’re at the age where you should be married and have children instead of ambition is to adopt a more genderless persona (Florence, in a stereotypically feminine outfit, surrounded by women, declaring herself King, not Queen.” I think many people see this song as a powerful proclamation, and in many ways it is, but I think there’s also a sadness and anger to it. Why should we have to choose between womanhood and power? Just some thoughts. Edit: also, not implying that femininity equates to motherhood in any way, but simply that it's one of the more conventional (but totally valid) pursuits of womanhood, which I think is what Florence is alluding to as well
@nixiemar8995

That's an interesting point. What a lot of people don't understand about that quote is that people back then believed that kingship was kind of a separate entity that inhabited a ruler; that may very well be what she was referring to. Which I really think only strengthens the connection to Florence, because she's always reminded me of the sibyl in the Aeneid, when she's possessed by the god Apollo. Who was of course a god of the arts, among many other things.

This song reminds me of a conversation in the Fleabag series where it says something similar: “Women are born with pain built in, It’s our physical destiny: period pains, sore boobs, childbirth, you know. We carry it within ourselves throughout our lives, men don’t." “They have to seek it out, they invent all these gods and demons and things just so they can feel guilty about things, which is something we do very well on our own. And then they create wars so they can feel things and touch each other and when there aren’t any wars they can play rugby. Florence: I need my golden crown of sorrow... “King” is the first single from Florence + the Machine’s fifth studio album, Dance Fever. The lyrics depict Florence Welch struggling with the desire of going on with her a career and a silent wish of having children, as explained by the artist in an April 2022 interview with Vogue. In her head, those feelings are opposite and don’t go well together, because she can’t see how kids could fit in her lifestyle. "The whole crux of the song is that you’re torn between the two. The thing I’ve always been sure of is my work, but I do start to feel this shifting of priorities, this sense of, like, maybe I want something different." The song was first teased in a letter sent out to some fans on February 21, 2022, that said “CHAPTER 1” and had a card inside. On the following day, billboards throughout London had the same card displayed, and the band’s website was updated with 15 cards, the first one being the “KING”, and an announcement that new music would be coming soon. The single artwork was shot by American director and photographer Autumn de Wilde, who had already previously worked with Florence + The Machine by directing the music video for “Big God”. She also directed the music video for “King”. This is the group’s first release since “Call Me Cruella”, released in 2021 for the movie Cruella starring Emma Stone.

"As an artist, I never actually thought about my gender that much, I just got on with it. I was as good as the men and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my 30s and the future, I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires. That to be a performer, but also to want a family might not be as simple for me as it is for my male counterparts. I had modelled myself almost exclusively on male performers, and for the first time I felt a wall come down between me and my idols as I have to make decisions they did not." "Sometimes songs just arrive fully formed, and it’s always when you think you’ll never write a song again. I felt like my creative abilities were finally at the peak of how I understood myself as an artist and what I wanted to do. But if I wanted to have a family, there was this sense that suddenly I was being irresponsible with my time by choosing this thing that I’ve known my whole life, which is performance, which is making songs, which is striving to be the best performer that I can be. Somehow, it would be your fault if you miss the boat. I think that scream at the end of “King”, it’s just one of frustration, and confusion as well. I was thinking about Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen. I was thinking about how they can commit their body entirely to the stage. I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m not going to be able to do that. I’m going to have to make choices.’ It’s a statement of confidence, but also of humour that the album has, of ‘If I’m going to sacrifice these other things in my life, I have to be the best.’ I was like, ‘Why not me? Why can’t I be king?’"

Heard this song for the first time today and it blew my mind. I think I listened to it 20 times. I am a 53-year-old single mother whose 16-year-old amazing daughter is starting to live her own life and will be going to college in the near future. When she was born, I was a mother and a bride... When she was 4 and a half, I left her father. I felt beat down, controlled, suffocated, he was mentally abusive. We continued to do things as a family, but I could not be married to him, we talk a lot about our daughter and take great pride in the strong, smart, talented woman she is becoming. I don't think I will ever marry again, and I am not at all sad about it. I love that Florence proclaims that she is King. I think this song represents her taking power, power to decide who she wants to be and maybe being a little angry that she has to make a choice like that to be KING. But then mid-song she seems to make peace with it and I love this part in the video where all the girls raise their swords and the Chorus... It's just so amazing like they are joyful in claiming their power... I work in a super male dominant field, and I am a very strong woman... I am intimidating and to some threatening, even though I am hardworking and very good at my job. Something about this song hit me professionally and personally. Bravo Florence for writing a song that speaks to all of us in our own way. I can see women's festivals held around this song!

To me.... this video is a love letter to the fans, a proclamation of her dedication to her art and the bonds forged with it -- no matter the cost. And the cost is high. Absolutely beautiful. Now let's go snap some necks and conjure curses.
