Guide to visiting Flores & Tikal Guatemala (2019) Mayan Ruins

In this episode we stay on in the picturesque town of Flores in Guatemala and share with you our experience of visiting the Mayan site of Tikal.
Flores is a small and beautiful town located on and island in a lake. The island is easily accessible as it is connected to .the mainland by a bridge. We show you all the island. Flores is a meca for tourist arriving in Guatemala from Belize or as a final stop before heading to Belize and is the main place that tourists stay to visit the Mayan Ruins of Tikal.
We took a day tour to the Mayan Ruins of Tikal, which are located approximate one and a half hours drive from Flores. A site filled with mystery - make sure you have a guided tour as the guides are very knowledgable and without them you would be walking around the ruins and tikal without learning anything about the Mayan history or way of life - they're also great for spotting and pointing our wildlife on the way.
We recommend visiting Tikal early in the morning as by 11am the weather is very hot and nearly 40 degrees celsius. We left at 4.30am and there is a tour that leaves around 3am if you want to watch the sun rise over the ruins.

In case you don't know us - let us introduce ourselves - we are Chris (48) & Marianne (51). We are a married travel couple. We recently quit our jobs and sold our belongings to travel full time.
After more than 22 years of marriage we are still best friends
The aim is we are going to step foot in every country in the world before we die - or die trying !. We are currently also planning an epic around the world road trip. So stayed tuned for more clips as we TREAD the Globe in either Trudy the TREAD camper van or armed with our backpacks!

I went to Tikal and Carmalita (10days trekking) in April. I stayed in Flories before we went trekking and after. When we got back from trekking we went to the beach and it was beautiful. Some days there the temperature reached over 110°F. Loved it and me and my kids want to go back.

Hi - yes you can - we got a ride in (about 40 mins / 1 hour) and then after we were offered to walk around and get a bus 2 hours or 4 hours later .... tbh we nearly died from the heat ... and got the first bus home !! It seems very expensive to pre-book tours online so we're wondering if you went with a local company you booked in Flores or something similar?

Hi Raven - when we arrived on Flores - we had a good walk around and checked out the tour companies and asked the hostel if they could recommend any particular tours / things to see and do - and we ended up using on of the tour operators - check that they get you there super early as it get very hot very early !! 😅😅Enjoy and have a fabulous time !!

Hi Ed - you can use credit cards in the supermarkets and stores / restaurants in Flores - and at Tikal, they have a port-a-cabin reception area that looks like a space station and took credit cards - but we always have a bit of cash handy just in case the line goes down !! You have piqued my interest in Apocalypto with your visit to Tikal. It might be a good self-isolation watch. Well I just watched Apocalypto and came back here to edit my comment. It was instructive to see how Mel Gibson imagined the Mayan culture, the body decorations and hair styles depicted the class system. However, the bloody capture and enslavement was hard to watch so I covered my eyes. I continued to do so throughout the bloody parts of the movie. Lots of good jungle shots and a fairly heavy handed depiction of the decline of an amazing culture. Worth it over all.
