Grace debuted FOUR new songs at Austin City Limits on October 7th, 2017 - City Song, Florets, Better Life, and Talk Good. (expand for lyrics)
[Verse 1]
Wake up
In a dream dream dream
And the air is soft
To breathe breathe breathe
So hold on and don’t let go
If you fall down, then you should know
That we can just be
[Pre-chorus]
Blowing florets
And I want to dance in the air
Blowing florets
And just not care about anyone or anything
But you and me
[Chorus]
So don’t let go of me
Don’t let go of me
Don’t let go
[Verse 2]
And rise up, (like?) the trees trees trees
Let go of all responsibilities
And we can just be
[Pre-chorus]
Blowing florets
I wanna dance in the air
Blowing florets
And just not care about anyone or anything
But you and me.
[Chorus]
So don’t let go of me
Don’t let go of me
Don’t let go of
[Bridge]
Wherever the wind blows
Ever the wind blows
Don’t let go
Oh
Wherever the wind blow
Ever the wind blows
Don’t let gooooooo
[Pre-chorus]
Florets
I wanna dance in the air
Blowing florets
And just not care about anyone or anything
But you and me
[Chorus]
So don’t let go of me
Don’t let go of me
Don’t let go of me
[Bridge]
Wherever the wind blows
Ever the wind blows
Don’t let go
Wherever the wind blows
Ever the wind blows
Don’t let go

What could I say. After read all those beautiful comments I hope that your wishes come true. Florets stunned me since the beginning. It remembers me the songs I liked so much during my young years. As I followed every step Grace made since audition I only realize now why i was so hugged up since the beginning. She has something supernatural, be it talent, wisdom or child innocence, I don't know. Hopefully she may continue on that road long after I'm gone. Regret only that I can't be part of it.

I was impressed at how this song came about. Grace wanted to know what those little fuzzy things were that come off of thistles or dandelions. She wanted to write some lyrics about them. Someone told her they were called florets. So that became the name of the song. I'm in awe at how she can take a simple thing like this and write such great lyrics. And then compose the melody as well.

Just the few songs she's produced so far (and 'few' here is only meant in a relative way, given that she's a prolific song writer) should be enough to put her into a hall of fame. That is, if you use quality to judge by, versus quantity.

This song showcases all the highest potential in Grace VanderWaal---transcends all the early comparisons, and puts her in a more serious category with the likes of Florence Welch. That is some high flying for a 13 year old. I know it's a matter of category, or taste, but did they ramp to it, holding back all her best stuff? Florets and the other songs making their debut at ACL are the prize hidden inside the crackerjack box.

Deliberately or not, the management of all this is being exceptionally well done; and if not deliberate Grace and her team would have had a hard time determining if there was any "best stuff" to hold back, as it is all the best.

My only concern is this: How many music videos do you make from this album? What's normal for albums these days? This, "City Song" and "Better Life" seem like great choices but we still haven't heard two of the tracks, and "Burned" or "Talk Good" would already be other excellent choices for variety sake. Btw, it's bizarre that I talk about "Burned" in such passive ways now, because before I would have sworn it was going to be far and away the best track on the album. Lol, how little foresight I had.
@MarkLalondeIndieFilmmaker
@MarkLalondeIndieFilmmaker 7 жыл бұрын
DynamiteToadie the label keeps releasing songs with videos until the public stops buying them. If Florets performs as it should, then I think following it up with a really touching artsy video for "A Better Life" would be great to showcase Grace's diversity and powerful vocals (powerful for a singervof any age). Once that single runs it's course expand the public's awareness of Grace's ramge even further with the ultrahip "Talk Good". Those three (plus Moonlight) should have the public salivating to hear what else this phenom is going to come out with next. After this album and Florets are released if I hear one more troll try to say that all of Grace's songs sound the same I'm going to frickin' lose it.
@DynamiteToadie

Interesting Mark. I honestly don't know how these companies deal with music videos these days. Most albums don't have that many songs worth making videos on, but well, nearly all of these could have videos. Again, "City Song" is my favorite, and it just SOUNDS like a video. It'd probably be big budget though, so go out on it or something. I've worked in film for awhile. What I'm imaging would be EXPENSIVE. I'm really curious how this albums going to do. I've pre-ordered 5 copies for gifts and stuff, but we're the outliers. I'm sure a ton of her fans are Spotify users as well. I think some us older people that don't use that stuff (or at least I don't lol) miss on just how popular she is. Hopefully she still gets a gold or platinum in the next year. That would be rad, and to bring it back to videos, I think that success largely depends on how many videos they do.

I love this live version of the song so much more than the studio. With Grace's vocals front and center, the way she uses her voice throughout the song, it just comes alive, powerful.

I love her for the fact that when she was 12 (my age), she stood out from the rest of the 12 year olds. What I mean is that most 12 year olds of this society don't really make music based off of life as inspiring and meaningful as she did. In fact, most of them don't truly understand the true meaning of life unlike her. I can use a series of words to describe her right now. She is a very humble, gorgeous, intelligent, legendary, beautiful sounding and musically inclined person. Not only did she have interest in music, music had interest in her too by giving her fame and a career. I will forever ❤️ you Grace. You were such an inspiration to me.

100% real from all accounts. Some people says she is getting a lot of help because they are jealous but from all that has come out grace writes most of the words herself and some songs all by herself then gets help from producers to fill in the blanks. I think what is telling is she has 3 grown adults in her band and all of them look happy as can be to be there.

It's 1964, I'm 12 years old again, hearing the Beatles for the first time. If you happened to have experienced it you know what I'm talking about. You hear the music - it's got a totally different feel to it than pop music of that time. You absolutely love it but you can't articulate why. All you know is you want more and can't imagine going a day without hearing it a hundred times. You feel happy when you hear the songs, whether for the first time or the ten thousandth time. It's like rose colored glasses for your ears. I never imagined in my wildest dreams I would have that experience again in my lifetime, but then Grace came along. I saw her AGT audition and froze as the same feelings overwhelmed me. She is pure magic. Her music stands alone as a completely new genre. It's not Pop, it's not Folk, it's not Rock, it is simply Grace. All comparisons to other artists are fundamentally meaningless. I (and millions like me) owe a huge debt of gratitude to Grace's mom for seeing her talent and signing her up for AGT, and to Olivia for being wonderful in her own right, and supporting and encouraging her little sister, and of course to Grace for sharing her talent and making the world a better place. I have to go now and listen to Florets and Escape My Mind for the hundredth time today.

Stewart Johnson, 1st, agree 108 % of course. 2nd, what I noticed is how many of us FanderWaals are so moved by listening that we feel the need to describe our feelings in more than the typical single line comment, to share the experience with others before returning to play the songs again. This is unique by comparison to other artists. And from the abundance of replies it is clear that many fans are actually going through the comments again and again, to _read_ new comments like yours. FanderWaals are not only connected through music but through emotion.

Ernst Müllner and Stewart, thank-you for sharing your feelings about Grace and her music. Ernst, you hit the nail on the head regarding our need to uncork our emotions and thoughts about her music with others. It's like we can't contain our excitement and emotions and need to not only inspire others to discover Grace's music, but to vicariously re-live the joy of first discovery by watching reaction videos or reading the moving first comments of others who share how they became a fan. It's a wonderful thing.

Ernst Müllner and Mark: basically, the entire Grace experience is uncharted territory. Even the Beatles didn't have this level of appeal. 10-30 year-olds were completely blown away, but most people over 30 didn't really like them. Many of the older generation at the time disliked them intensely. Contrast this to Grace: I'm 65, my wife is 58, we have a 17 year old daughter, and we absolutely LOVE Grace. You look out at the tens of thousands of people at her ACL concert and you see all ages. Her appeal is totally universal and transcends age. I do not think there has been anyone, ever, whose music appealed to an 80 year old and a 12 year old equally. Completely new, uncharted waters. The sky is the limit for her, and I feel blessed to be able to watch her get better and better.

I believe with Grace its what you see is what you get and she puts herself out there we as listeners feel it and respond, to much of music today is a show with the real feelings removed. For eg Artists like Beyonce have many writers and people behind the scenes to create her album, yes it sells and her fans love it but they love the name not her true heart as that is not on show.

Perfect Imperfection moment at 2:57. The loss in her voice as she lets loose with "...or anything" is the exact kind of thing that has driven Grace's detractors crazy for a year and a half and counting. What vocal purists and singing "experts" have dismissed and attacked is exactly what makes Grace stand out in (and above) the crowd in a cookie-cutter music industry, and this is the best moment in what may be her best song to date.

ed reyes I consider City Song and Better Life to be anthems. Florets is lyrically the mold of Light the Sky and Beautiful Thing, but as dance music rather than ballad. Escape my Mind hits with the power of Rachel Platten's "Fight Song", and so on. The variety is part of the issue in putting tags on someone's "style". Pop covers too much ground these days, and Rock perhaps not enough.

Shawn Mendes songs have a very similar rythm (especially the use of guitars to really propel the beat). This song should absolutely kill the game on radio if they give Grace a chance.

We have heard all her songs from the new album except for Darkness Keeps Chasing Me and Insane Sometimes. I need to prepare myself for a new favorite! I ask all her fans to pre-order her album. Let's turn it into a Gold or Platinum record. It only takes 500 thousand sales to make it Gold in the US. She has over 2 million followers on Instagram! Gracevanderwaal.com Target offers 2 bonus songs, 14 songs total $9.99.

ed reyes it appears that RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has decided to join the 21st century and will now count streaming and downloads toward artists achiieving gold and platinum certifications. "The breakdown is that 1,500 audio or video song streams equals 10 track sales, which then equals one album sale." This will help tremendously.

Mark Lalonde Yes, that is absolutely true. I just wanted to keep it simple for the readers. But yes, streaming also counts.

ed reyes I just wanted to let people who only use streaming services that their support will count as well.👍 That being said, a purchase of the album itself is the quickest way to demonstrate one's support and to generate headlines for Grace.👍👍

I've a theory - seems to me that choosing a warm field and looking summery in that long dress has a lot to do with Florets, but we'll have to see. I'm going to guess that Florets - if this is what it is -will be the single to support the launch of the album and we'll see the video at the same time as the album and Florets (if it is) will become the single and music video that launches Grace into the mainstream, the place to anchor the social media buzz and so on.... Meantime we have Kristin's McQuaid's great Moonlight dance vid to feed the hungry till 3rd, like it was planned (and indeed it probably has been!)

Hi Hypermarlin! If this video isn't for Florets, then I don't know what the record company is smoking. Like you said, it's the kind of single that seems designed to launch an album and career; it's catchy, it's danceable, it's deep, it's romantic, it's sweet, and Grace will look amazing interacting with nature all done up like she is for this shoot. It's what she and the album need. My theory is that it will launch this Thursday October 26th to give radio stations and talk shows something new to play when referring to the album launch. They need to follow that up with an appearance on the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon where Grace will perform the song and then do an interview and a singing skit with Jimmy like his "Wheel of Musical Impressions" or "#hastags" anything to get her singing for people who aren't familiar with her. Grace has quietly bragged that her go-to Karaoke song is "Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, and we've heard her (when she was only 12) sing a snippet of "Stone Cold" by Demi Levato. I think with a rehearsal before going on air Grace would kill a "Wheel of Musical Impressions". I know it seems weird that I'm harping on it, but it did wonders for Allessia Cara's exposure. We have to remember that Jackie Evancho lost her season despite being immensely popular on the show and went on to become the youngest person in history to go platinum. The same thing happened on Britain's Got Talent when Susan Boyle lost to a dance troupe. Susan Boyle has sold over 25 million records (that's 25 times platinum).

Thank you Mark; Ed I'm not on Facebook (yup someone has to be not on Facebook) so good to see; I'd wondered what she'd do with a small set somewhere down the billing. It must have been tough with a mixed audience, no band, and some issues with whatever happened between Gossip Girl and Florets, but she handles it with a laugh - looks like they had to cut a song, 10 mins only, not enough time. What's great about those supporting shows is of course the exposure it gives her to other audiences, not yet converted!

Hypermarlin Although the small concert was not perfect, probably put together with very little planning, it is what all artist go through on their way to success. They pay their dues. There is a lot of Blood, Sweat and Tears and arguing with Stage managers. This makes you tough and experienced. Besides that, she needs the exposure and battle scars to gain respect from the music industry.

Love how Grace is redefining language here. I can imagine how a generation down the line dandelion seeds will indeed be called florets because of this song (When today it's actually the word for the individual small flowers in the compound inflorescence, before coming to fruition.)"Blowing pappus" (which actually comes from a greek word for "old man" because of the grey head) just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?

I believe she is talking about dandelion florets. You know the fluffy white puff ball that breaks into small seedlings that get blown away in the wind. We used to pick and blow on them when i was a kid all the time to watch them fly away. st.depositphotos.com/1447173/4024/i/950/depositphotos_40242289-stock-photo-florets-of-dandelion.jpg

If there was one song on the JTB album that disappointed me it was this one. Hearing how great it sounded at ACL I thought it would be a huge hit for Grace. It seems that producers don't get it. Grace doesn't need echo and reverb to be dynamic. Just give her a live band and let her go.
