When does she NOT get a standing ovation?? That young lady has a powerful voice AND she is an incredible song writer! And yes, I know this is an adaptation of an older song, but it is not a cover. It’s a reimagining of it and it’s completely awesome!

It is NOT a cover, it is a re-adaptation of the song. The lyrics were written by Grace. It was authoriced by Nash. And it is fantastic. Grace development is incredible. Outstanding.

Thanks I did listen very carefully. I know it's not the same but why did they stick this old hook into her new song? I think she has much better songs and to me who is a fan of the original "I can see clearly now" this feels weird. I wish they would push "Clay" or one of her other great songs. I hope the best for her, she is great.

Yeah absolutely she is amazing she's been writing what I considered great song since she was like 11? which is awesome. The fact that there were 4 writers working on this song explains a lot to me it feels like a lot of parts mushed together too many cooks in the kitchen in my opinion but again she is amazing

Idk why people are saying it’s not a cover. It’s an adaptation but it is still a cover. “a new performance or recording by someone other than the original artist or composer of a previously recorded, commercially released song.”

Grace is awesome! I'm not saying there is anything wrong with her or that song in any way. She only changed a few words. That song is from 1973 and it is by Johnny Nash. It's a wonderful song and I'm glad it's back. The best video is from a show called the Midnight Special.

I am always dazzled by pretty much everything she does and this is no exception. She still has that incredible mix of being a very young lady and being a wise old soul, with a powerful ability to communicate emotion. Even the band was drawn into it. I wondered if she had been somehow tethered to NBC Universal, but now with an appearance on one of CBS's top shows, that concern is gone. We may see more of her in the near future.

Well for sure the world now knows her name, she is no longer just that shy young girl that won an american talent show, but an amazing artist that does her music with emotion and passion and shares the love of music with all of us! Grace was what the music industry has been needing desperately for so many years. She made me love music again and i think im far from being the only one in this case, and if you needed more proofs of all this, its right here on this video, but in also so many others, id suggest a look at her live concerts videos...trust me it will blow your mind even more.

rhart123 too right, and its just the beginning, she is set to go far and leave her mark in the music industry, she brings a fresh air to the music and makes it become real again, close to the heart and emotions, just as music shall allways be. And you know whats better? She will never be perfect! Thats what makes her special...she is real! She never sings the same song twice the exact same way, she sometimes messes up a phrase...and thats just perfect that shows she is as real as she can be...and she has a huge talent and a unique voice that gets better with each passing day. Gone is the time when she was just the agt season 11 winner...today she is way more than that...and they better get her a nametag, cause we all know her name now...so she better aswell! 😂

I have heard some isolated, non-enhanced tracks of so-called great singers (take that Beyonce) that are very weak. Grace is the real deal whether sitting on her back porch just her and her ukulele or with a full orchestra backing her up. I am 67 years old and she can speak to an old bugger like me as well as to her contemporaries, that folks is a rare talent and gift.

Grace is very original in her own ways and especially at her age. From her voice to her lyrics. She doesn't sound like a 14 year old. Record producers would push her into doing a pop song or songs that well generate popularity. Very glad she has stuck with her guts and don't let anyone tell her otherwise. She is original and has so much to show for. Her own KZbin Subscribers went from 1.6mil in '17 today she's at 2.6mil. Her "Clearly" song video is at 4.2 mil viewers. Thats a big Wow!

Mejeruchst - if you want to go on a journey to discover more of Grace VanderWaal, you have some fun ahead of you. You may end up hooked but that's OK as it's a nice place to be. You could start with listening to her first EP "Perfectly Imperfect" (written aged 12). Try her LP "Just The Beginning" (aged 13) and sample a couple of tracks e.g. "Darkness Keeps Chasing Me" and "Escape My Mind" or "Sick of Being Told" for a mix or serious and fun stuff. Try "MTV Push" cover of "River" - utterly superb. Her songs are used in advertising now too. Try Story of Lucy (Windex), the 3 minute version of the advert. She appeals to everyone (I'm ancient) not just teenagers. Oh and she's supporting Imagine Dragons US stadium tour this summer. 40 venues, 750,000 people. She is awesome.

Thank you for your suggestions! I saw her on America's Got Talent, but if someone else here hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have put two and two together... I didn't recognize her, and I never watched the AGT finale episode (DVR deleted it before I got to it). Besides what I saw on AGT, "Clearly" is the only song I've seen of hers, so I really appreciate your guide and info. I didn't know much (er, any) of what you mentioned. And btw, I'm ancient too... well, relatively speaking (54). Apparently age doesn't ruin good taste in music! ;0)

I love the way she ends her words in the song, with a fade out, but it is so crisp. I first heard it in her song "Clay" on AGT, it made me fully realize her vocal talent and control.

Grace was 14 when this was recorded. 14! Her part in writing this re-imagining of Johnny Nash's wonderful song was the bridge. But if that is all you take away from this performance you are missing the point! She is 14! This is a professional, emotional, from the heart, extraordinary performance on a highly rated national TV show. She's 14! I hope that the public at large, not just he fans, recognize this remarkable young woman's talent. Grace is special!

Worst thing that can happen for Grace, is to have her talent homogenized and fed into the pop singer machine of the recording industry. If she stays herself, art will flourish, her career will thrive organically, and people will eventually come around to what others already recognized. Wish Grace lots of luck navigating that path.

Very tricky path but she trusts her instincts, even when she was pressured as a AGT competitor so she has the tools to do it
@WeylanYutani

Greg Cadman I believe she has great instincts, but it will certainly require more than instinct to withstand the pressures of record companies, producers, and (in some cases) fans steering/lobbying a direction and forcing her hand. It's going to require artistic patience in a very impatient era of music. I think she's doing great, and what she has achieved, and where she is, is both extraordinary, and enough. She's in a good spot. *Lastly, i hope her instincts tell her to say no to fake, overdubbed choirs in the production of her music. There is a lot to be learned from the production and business "success" of this song, and probably more interesting, how Grace reacts to it going forward, and what she perceives as success as she continues. Tricky indeed. :)

OMG. This"controversy" is dumb. They are two completely different songs, connected by a brief melody and four lines. Grace has never claimed its 100% her song, and has always given full props to Nash. Her song makes Nash's lines 10x more relevant to today's listeners. Did Diddy get this much crap when he sang "I'll Be Missing You"? *eyeroll*

I totally agree with you. Some commentators in this thread can't or don't want to wrap their minds around it, though. I guess some music takes getting used to (not in a historic, but personal experience sense). But what do I know - I can listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Miriam Makeba, Roger Hodgson, and Miles Davis and enjoy them all.

This specific version is still *to this day* my most favourite version of this song. I think for me, personally, it's the entire atmosphere. This was the first time I heard Grace sing - and it always takes me back to this very first experience; always hitting me with the entirety of that first impression, like, Grace's incredible voice, meaning and content of the lyrics - and also that reverberant chorus bouncing back from the audience... an absolutely location-specific sound effect at the Ed Sullivan Theater, that added such a dramatic and gripping element to that song. What a very well matured and distinctive voice she already had back then at that young age.
