Yeah, the Clone Wars cartoon -- while it had some good points -- in general made all the separatists look like incompetent idiots. There should have been far more arcs where the seperatists were winning and the republic had to work just to gain back lost ground, never mind press the advantage. That would have really added a lot of context to the movies and shown how the republic and seperatists were being used and that the whole thing was a big, manipulative waste of life... not an entire series that basically showed the Republic pwning the Seperatists.

It looked like he knew the art of war, but he clearly overestimated his attempts by going through the asteroid field which he though would give him protection, but actually made his ships less mobile and sitting right where a battalion of tanks (normally ground units but on large enough asteroids to support them) can be undetected to the point where they've flanked his Banking Clan ships. This is why I think Grievous, even for a very experienced warlord, can sometimes forget the principles that the Art of War has in calculating one's victory and simply do things based only through his assumptions.

Ryeguy123a There are a few episodes where the clones do lose to the droid army. And many more where the clones take heavy casualties. I think the point that they showed the clones winning most of the time was to show that the clones are superior than to droids. Plus they were made to combat this type of thing, the war was merely a test for the emperor's army that he had built and to get rid of some Jedi along the way.

For anti-starship action the clones should have been using the "Self-Propelled Heavy Artillery Turbolaser", rather than the AT-TEs. Park a few of them inside the asteroids instead of on the asteroids, then when commanded poke their gun barrels out and open fire.

That line had me shouting for joy watching this at ten years old at the time. I was worried for all of them at first thinking “omg they have twice as many cruisers” and then I got to see how brilliant Anakin was while the clones took care of business. During this moment I was able to completely forget about everything that would later happen with order 66 when I saw how it was meant to be. Anakin, Ahsoka, Rex, and the other clones all united to be my heroes.

Right? Not just that, but the story also got a lot better. In later parts you actually care about clones, cis, and see the problem from both side. Everything just clips together and see that Jedis have personality, and not all of them are okay with what the Order does. I also liked how the battles became much more better and realistic. Some was just beautiful, but dark. I don't really like these starter edition battles. It feels like a joke and they are not well thought out. Oh yes!, and even Grievous got a lot better. I still think he is a bit weakly painted as the "Jedi killer" and etz, but he looks like a real threat.

That's something that only someone who doesn't know anything about Star Wars says. This series is for kids, of course they won't show the bad guys win. Grievous is known to have conquered nearly ALL planets in the outer rim and has fought and defeated 7 Jedi (including Shaak Ti and Ki-Adi-Mundi) with two sabers only.

Chuck Norris They actually show the bad guys winning a lot in this series. Grevious is only really powerful when he is in control of a situation. Since he had just lost his fleet and wasn't prepared for personal combat, his only choice was to flee. In the 2003 Clone Wars when he fought the Jedi, they were already trapped, so he was able to toy with them as much as he wanted.

I think what happened is the first season of this show was targeted towards kids but after it was viewed by more adults and teens so they started to get a bit more darker with the story (one episode in season 3 goes into slave trade at its pretty brutal) by season 3 the writing is alot more mature and the characters and events get a bit darker so for those who dont watch because its childish it gets way better so stay with it, im sure Rebels will do the same thing.

+Ki-Adi Sandwich I have to agree, he had a sound strategy. With the forward shields reinforced, he had the advantages he needed to win a Cruiser to Cruiser battle. But the hard part was that although a Asteroid belt could protect his flank, he wouldn't haven't any primary defences to prevent a assault from behind besides the asteroid belt and a asteroid belt is a neutral Advantage that could have been used by either side if played right. I would have analyzed the situation more carefully, spy intelligence being accurate? that's not often so I would have been more weary, normally its inaccurate with only small accuracy because of the nature of war so that would have made me suspicious. The fact the cruisers arnt spread out would have made me even more suspicious because normally Id expect a planetary defence system to have the cruisers spread out abit further to provide 360 planetary protection. Not only that but because the Jedi are there and theirs so many abnormalities I would have halted my advance. The Jedi had time to set up effective defences and the knowledge that their vehicles on the planet could have the ability traverse many planes would have made me weary about potential defences on the asteroids to outflank me once I made the advance. Not only that but because the fleet is under the command of Anakin, who is fairly known for not following typical battle strategy or Republic protocols. I would have expected him to do something abnormal and unheard of to win the advantage. With all that my ultimate plan would have been to hold back 2 cruisers for defence and then order the 3rd into for the advance. If nothing occurred I would hold position. Anakin isn't known for typical warfare and considering that Intellegence was actually bang on would make me highly suspicious that the intelligence was very likely fed to the CIS spys in order to set up a trap. all of these together would have shown a trap in disguise. Grievous is one of the best generals they have, I would expect him to be more cautious when it comes to open engagement and any commander would be able to see these red flags and put together that it was likely a trap and should hold off on engagement until a better understanding of the battle situation was possible. Even a simple scout sent out to look for signs of life on the asteroid belt would make me more confident for a open engagement but without that knowledge and knowing the enemy. I wouldn't engage without better information to rely on unless I was ordered to by a superior.

actully the droids where unnumbering the clones from beging to end of the clone wars. they even had bigger battleships such as the lucrehulk and big versions of the recusants and providences. they had even superweaponds like the Defoliator tank, the super tank, Malevolence and the Devestation! “If we attack from above they’ll have the advantage” You’re in SPACE Grievous! How does being above or below matter here? Also let’s analyze Anakin’s plan. He had to assume that Grievous would go THROUGH the asteroid field to get to their ship and use the asteroids as cover. If Grievous came at them in any other way then he’d out gun the Republic fleet while Rex would be out of range. So Anakin relied on Grievous making a specific play... which is either extremely perceptive or stupidly lucky.

The most powerful weapons on Grievous' frigates are the massive forward twin cannons, which, as seen in the show, can easily disable a Republic cruiser in a number of shots, but they only point directly forward. The Republic cruisers have their main batteries in turrets arranged on the top and bottom of the hull so that they all can reach a target anywhere around the ship except directly in front or behind, where most of the turrets are obstructed. The upside to this is a very small profile to be shot at. So if Grievous attacked from anywhere else except the direct front or back, he would be running into the full firepower of the Republic fleet without his strongest guns. Republic cruisers are generally better than Separatist frigates in up to a 1v3 brawl, so Grievous going through the asteroids to utilize his best weapons was the logical move. If Anakin hadn't set up the AT-TE trap, his cruisers would have either had to engage with fewer guns or tip their bow down or up to bring more guns to bear at the cost of increasing their profile, both of which would've made them vulnerable to the frigates' deadly forward guns

If you attack from the front, they basically pull up and rip the ship apart in one shot. 😉 But I see where you going, directly up front would probably work, since they would not be fast enough to get the big gun out.

An armor designed to witstand enemy space ship gun fire at least for a while. Not go down instanly like its armor was made of wet paper... The AT-TE guns are good against ground vehicle armor (less thicker), not against space ship armor. Armor difference is huge here.

again, you have to remember that there were at least twenty or thirty on each asteroid. all of that firepower is certainly enough to penetrate the rear armor on those ships, and if enough of them were to hit the propulsion systems, the damage would overload the reactors, causing the ship's shields to fail, as well as some of its other systems. besides, they didn't have enough time in the episode to show the whole battle, so the attack probably lasted a bit longer than that, and was probably a bit larger in scale.

TheVioletLightning 013 Imagine that a battle ship has good amount of armor. That ship is attacked by 20 tanks that can make minor dmg to its hull. The only way those tanks can do something is to shoot all in on place of the hull in order to "dig" deeply into the ships armor. The dmg here was spreaded and not concentrated. You can even see how some single shots do huge dmg to the Munificent like it was made from wet paper. Anyway. Im sure you dont want to talk about this. Lets just leave it here.

I think this is one of the best space battle in Star Wars. The music fits perfectly, cuts are really good, Grievous thinks he has the upper hand(which he does) but gets outsmarted with a genius tactic by Skywalker and dialogue is well written. Animation quality is the only dowside, but that is because this was one the first episodes ever created. But overrall this probably one of the few space battles that have a normal frontal attack between the CIS and the Republic, which I really like

***** First off, Star Wars was originally made for children. Second, it's actually not that childish, because a lot of characters later in the show end up dying. Unlike most kids shows, it also touches on adult subjects such as illegal slavery (present in both the Star Wars universe and ours), discrimination (against species), ethics of cloning (there were multiple episodes that touched on how the clones are treated as expendable, replaceable, not allowed to have their own families, etc.) It evens touches on flaws in the justice system, as Ashoka was framed and not given a proper trial. There also were multiple episodes that sounded like the plots of horror films. Third, you can't judge an entire series by the first few episodes. A lot of series have really badly done first few episodes, and then the writers learn from their mistakes and make the rest of the series better.

1:17 and 3:15 show the previously and subsequently absent Ventral DBY-827 Turbolaser Cannons. This would give the Venator Star Destroyer a wider range of fire and enable the ship to Hit targets below it without wasting power on the SPHA/T Beam Turbolaser Cannon. And would be VERY useful for Targeting Ground units and Obliterating them. Unfortunately they are only seen in this Episode.

Alot of people mock this, but I thought this was a good idea. I mean what general would expect tanks to be used in a space battle? And between that, the tanks being able to destroy the ship due they're shields being so focus on the front, left them up to an ass kicking (Literally) from behind. This fight sucked... seriously? Grevious being out maneuvered by Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka? First off that wouldn't happen, second the AT-TE walkers' weapons are not powerful enough to basically one shot a CIS cruiser. And neither are the weapons on Anakins Starfighter! Jeeze, fights like this is why I despise the Clone Wars... go back to the 2003 Clone Wars if you want to see real villains at work... hell even Episode two and three did a good job of portraying the droid fleet/army as formidable, they just seem like a joke here.

HeartofAiur so you find it hard to believe Grevious was outmaneuvered by Anakin, you do remember that this is Darth Vader right, the guy who fucked everyone up in Empire Strikes Back and enforced the empires military control across the galaxy. Anakin being a capable general is not something new.
