Florida Amendment 1: Partisan School Board Elections
ORIGIN: State Legislature
SUMMARY: Currently all candidates for school board run as nonpartisan (NOP) candidates. This amendment would change that system by requiring all candidates to run with a party affiliation in closed party primaries.
Proponents maintain this amendment will inform voters of party identity and potentially the political ideologies of candidates, thus exposing liberal political ideologues in red school districts. Some opponents maintain that partisan politics should have no place in school board races, while others maintain that the amendment would eliminate conservative candidates from contention in blue school districts, adding that liberal candidates in red counties could simply change party affiliation and bring their liberal policies to the school districts regardless.
A YES vote on this amendment would require all candidates to run on a party ticket, with only partisan voters allowed to participate in school board primaries. A NO vote on this
amendment would leave the nonpartisan status in place for school board races.
