I really miss their SD70M-2s when i was little, I was 8 years old when they recived their ES44C4's in 2014. I used to remember when i was little when walking to the store with my dad, I used to see a couple SD70M-2s in one of the Rail america schemes and one of the CITX Locos leading 222 and 101 doing over 50 mph before crossing the tracks. It was fun and loud at the same time but i could never forget the memories i had with them.

Those SD70M-2s were neat engines! It’s great that you got to see them on FEC. Definitely memories to cherish. Thank you for sharing them with us.

The FEC Railway is a very unique railway, serving the East Coast of Florida. This line was the brainchild of Henry M. Flagler, who saw this line built south to Miami and the Key West Extension. I am thankful you captured the action before the new GE locomotives arrived! Its too bad that no passenger trains polish the FEC rails south from Jacksonville anymore. I would like to see a video on the KCS Railway before it gets combined with the Canadian Pacific Railway (DM&E and the SOO Line)!

Newer locomotives are nice, but for me, nothing beats an SD40-2 at speed. Just an iconic locomotive. Plus, those champion painted SD40-2s are sharp.
@CVisionProductions1 Жыл бұрын
We couldn’t agree more. Everything about the SD40-2 is endearing. And the Champion paint scheme is tough to beat!

FEC was definitely at it’s prime before the Gevos. Nowadays with the Gevos the only way you can find an EMD is on the locals. I’m glad they got rid of the SD70s because they were absolutely horrible. Fun fact in Bunnell the milepost jumps from MP 67 to MP 86 because the original line ran to Palatka and the current line continues on via the old line thus adding an extra 19 miles of the 350+ miles of the RR.
@CVisionProductions1 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information, James! The FEC has lots of interesting history. We’ve heard that those SD70M-2s weren’t the greatest. And we also noticed that milepost jump while we were out there. Fascinating stuff! We appreciate you watching and commenting.

The 104-107 have returned home to Florida. They now serve on my railroad: Florida Gulf And Atlantic. I knew the 105 and 107 were on our roster but was shocked to find 106 and 104 later on. So in the end, the quartet has come home to Florida.

The original main line went to Key West but I understood that stormy weather proved too costly for that. They terminated in Miami at Bowden Yard

Thanks for the comment, Jimmy. It was an incredible undertaking, building all the way to Key West. A marvel of engineering at the time. But alas, Mother Nature decided it was a bridge too far (pun intended).

@@CVisionProductions1 indeed. Remarkable to see those GP 40s in service . I first saw the railroad in 1996. The 400 series were GP40s and the 500 series were GP38s. They even had a handful of GP9s mostly in yard duty. There was/is a branch line to Cape Canaveral. NS used a lone C39-8 for that. I was actually born in Florida, Kissimmee to be exact. We lived in Haines City. But then we moved before I was a year old. So this was a treat to see what Florida was like.
@CVisionProductions1 Жыл бұрын
It’s a fascinating area, Jimmy. We would love to see the rail operations of NASA, if any movements were to occur. Also, it appears a few of the FEC GP9s ended up on Seminole Gulf.

Was EMD that bad with the SD70's FEC did not want the units and went to GE because FEC was always EMD
@CVisionProductions1 Жыл бұрын
Well, we’re thinking they wanted something new that would reduce their fuel and maintenance costs. They purchased the C4 GEVO model to eliminate a pair of traction motors per unit. That was most likely a major reason they went with those particular GEs in 2014. They are built for high speed, but aren’t the best for heavy grades or slippery rail.
@brendanmathis9634 Жыл бұрын
Should there be DP used
@CVisionProductions1 Жыл бұрын
That would be beneficial in certain situations, yes. Thankfully for FEC, they got away with running long trains without distributed power due to a gentle grade profile, and generally light trains.
