When a patient asks me why I'm wearing a mask I tell them it's because people literally cough right in my face for 8 hours straight. Patients take off their masks to cough. I've used all my sick leave and I can't afford to lose my job. Most of my coworkers are in the same boat. We are working with a skeleton crew. If you want better care in the ER please have some manners and use some common sense. And please stop bringing all 4 of your kids with you for a back ache you've had for 13 years.

@isabelladabrowska68046 жыл бұрын
Ari W go work in an ER for a month and see the idiots that come in. There will be 4 or 5 cardiac patients, you know, true emergencies. Then one frequent flyer or something minor that did not require the ER like the typical Friday night STD the pt has had for a few years. Those are the people demanding a turkey sandwich and pudding while they wait....from the RN that has to stop everything else to track down the sandwich or the pt will complain and get the nurse in trouble for being rude. Multiply this scenario x 12 hours. Screw bedside manner. The ER is for emergencies. It is not a place to hang out and be treated like royalty.
@MTknitter226 жыл бұрын
sam gonzalez Then I am gonna mention this too. In my TX area, we have health inspections list in local paper once monthly. In black n white, ya get to see how FILTHY your local restaurants are, folks. Altho its the LAW that employees have been checked out at local health dept BEFORE employment, many restaurants are cited and still stay open. My point? The parking lots still full with dumb people eating there - knowing the danger does not seem to matter. So - common sense is at record lows in many health issues not just flu. BTW, flu shots do not prevent the flu.
@MTknitter226 жыл бұрын
Ari W Family full of ER reg nurses here. You should not be shamed for bringing this up. Nursing ain’t what it used to be. For those healthcare workers where caring for people is a calling and the patient comes first, there is no excuse for being rude or condescending. Sick people and their scared relatives are often not exhibiting their best manners - its part of nursing. Now one NEVER has to put up with abuse - NEVER but I see rudeness to patients that would never have been tolerated ten years ago. FACT.

I thought the information was great. The hospital you work at is lucky to have someone who cares as much as you. I wash my hands a minimum 20-30 times a day. I’m a kidney transplant recipient, and have to be very careful due to the meds I take. I flew down here from Detroit to Ft Myers, and I wore a mask, safety glasses to avoid anything airborne. Don’t understand why people don’t wash their hands. I wash my hands after handling my own cell phone. You are a great asset to the hospital you work at, and they should be proud to have you as a nurse. I admire the hard work you and all nurses do. I pray that you weren’t penalized, after seeing your story on news, wasn’t sure what happened. Thanks again, I think you’re great. Pray you stay healthy.

Its our fault that the flu and other viruses, bacteria, get stronger each year. We take so much medicine for things the body can already handle naturally, that they become resistant and more deadly. I rarely take medication for any sickness, and my body takes care of it just fine. People are getting medicine for simple coughs, the only way you need medicine is if your in a life threatening condition or have a condition that requires constant medication. Now we have flu strains killing people within days, though the news makes it seem much larger than it is.

this is me That certainly *can* be true about Good, Intelligent, truly Caring nurses. They have way more hands-on time spent with patients. However in my personal extensive experience being in the hospital, there are a lot of nurses with nasty attitudes that obviously dislike their job and the patients get the brunt of it. Very rarely have I had nurses that were truly caring and professional. Some were but only if they thought supervisors/coworkers were watching. This is especially true during night shift. I know they're working long hours but that is not the patient's fault.

While normally I would agree, she did make quite a big mistake. While it is essential to stay hydrated, one should NOT drink Gatorade while sick, as sugar suppresses the immune system. I'm sure she had good intentions, but that misinformation may cause some people to become more sick

12 hour shift with no breaks and only 1 doctor at night?? That should be illegal!!!
@kirkboswell25756 жыл бұрын
Risa - it is a violation of the federal wage and labor laws - UNLESS they pay you for that time. Problem is most nurses are going to take care of the patients first, breaks become few and far between. And, although nurses can make their employer pay for lost break time, the hospitals put enough hurdles in the way that most nurses don't try. The real answer is to make the hospitals automatically pay for lost break time in areas with a track record of frequently lost time - such as all ERs. Regarding the one doctor, that's actually pretty normal. In larger hospitals he will have backup in the form of residents and the hospitalist. In the smaller ones, his backup will be the Doctors who are "on call".

Long ago in a Republic far far away... Hospitals were run by cities, counties, and churches. Federal legislation mandated a specific number of hospital beds per 1,000 population per the census. This guaranteed that all parts of the country were prepared for a natural disaster or an epidemic. Thank goodness we have been spared the burden of such a system... Thanks to Saint Reagan. Y'all better learn to administer to your own, because hospitals are full of sick people, and are under staffed, with too few beds. If you are sick, stay home. If you are infirm, stay home during flu season. Keep your infants at home like your grandparents did. Infants don't have immune systems. There is no benefit in breaking a fever unless it is excessive. The immune system induces a fever in an effort to kill the virus. A moderate fever is a good thing in this instance.

At the same time, acting like you're bearing the biggest cross to carry is a little insulting when the patients are the ones in agony not the nurses. No one should have to act like they're high and mighty for dealing with abuse all the time, a properly functioning healthcare system would deal with these illnesses with clinics long before the patients have to sit in a miserable room to be miserable. (I suspect this is the biggest issue for you Americans out there) A properly functioning education system would help people figure out how to know when they are dealing with something treatable outside of a hospital and a bit of support from some friends/family. A properly functioning employment and work system would enable patients and workers in all fields to have paid sick leave so as to prevent the spread of flu and related illnesses and get their flu shots. And live healthier lifestyles that reduce the chances of getting ill at all. A functioning hospital administration would have extra staff on hand and have more happy staff and less miserable ones pretending to be happy. A better designed city would spread out the patients going to each hospital, proper design of car parks, public transport etc all make a difference. No one needs to act like an angel if your system does the heavy lifting for you. We need less heroes and more intelligent people in Administration.
@jackspy57086 жыл бұрын
Mad Hatters in jeans true, but the people that go into a ER with a child with barely a fever, only being a small headache, and bringing along other healthy people into an ER room lack common sense so you can blame the system but you can’t not blame the sick people that go to an ER without staying hydrated, getting rest, and practicing good hygiene in general so that the sickness doesn’t get too bad People like this should learn some common sense because they don’t have any

I'm a mother of 2 toddlers and once Christmas was over and flu started breaking out, I went into quarantine mode. I go grocery shopping without my kids, sometimes. I carry my own wipes around, we wash our hands as soon as we get home. We get company and I Lysol or bleach the crap out of everything once they leave!! I don't know how many times I've seen people sneeze into their hands at the grocery store and go straight to touching groceries, I steer away from their particles. Just stay home people or at very least wear a mask and wash you damn hand!!

You guys, unless you are immunocompromised, very young or elderly, Tamiflu (the flu medication she is talking about) only shortens flu symptoms by ONE DAY according to evidence-based studies. So, if you are a relatively healthy individual, there is no need for the medications. DO the home treatments she is talking about. Good advice there. - FNP
@nattybumppo20816 жыл бұрын
victoriaaak Tamiflu may be the biggest scam big pharma has ever created. I chuckle when I hear about people stockpiling it, thinking it's going to save their life during an outbreak. Goes to show how brainwashed most people are by western medicine and that a pill will make everything better. Studies have shown that Echinacea is just as, or possibly more effective than tamiflu.

If you are sick, please don't take your germs to your local theater or restaurant just because you are bored or you don't feel like cooking for yourself. If you go to your local Walmart to pick up your prescriptions or cold medicine, please don't allow your snotty-nosed kids to meander throughout the toy section, touching every surface of the store. Employees at that facility have to go behind your kids and put things back in the proper place, which means they have been exposed to whatever your kids are spreading around. Keep your sick kids at home. Keep yourself at home unless it's an emergency. You will recover faster and you won't spread the flu all over your community.

Tracy c I’m sure she does educate patients on proper methods to avoid spreading illnesses. I don’t believe she is degrading any patients, she is telling people that are thinking about going into an ER not to unless really needed (as in a true emergency). And believe me she deserves more than just a paycheck, I know, you see I too am an ER nurse 👨⚕️ and not only do we get treated like crap by people we are helping we are exposed to everything that comes in, are on our feet for 12 hrs and often do not get a lunch break. Give it a shot and see how you like it. Bye now

LeeLee IsFree that's BS. These positions do not give an open invitation to be abused by the public. The majority of customers/clients/patients do not know how to treat others. They walk in demanding with a nasty attitude. Customers should be refused service if they are rude and abusive. A nurse and teacher certainly are not there to be screamed at, which happens to both often. The customer is always right attitude is why so many customers have bad manners.

This is employer's faults for being so greedy and self centered in a lot of cases. A nurse (an ER nurse!) in Ohio just got fired for calling out sick even with a doctors note saying she has the flu and is infectious.
@InfiniteTranscendence6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't blame the employer, because that's just an isolated case. Country wide this is a different strand of flue than usual. It's said to be on the level of the swine flu pandemic now. I've personally been staying indoors except to run errands. It's insane it hasn't died out yet. Some people are even blaming the actual shots (which is debatable).

It disgusts me how nurses don’t get the respect they deserve. My ma works in the ICU and some patients think they deserve special treatment **edit** This comment refers to 5:05 . Like these are tough hardworking people that I’m trying to give credit. Not glorification, I’m not worshipping them. Just giving respect where respect is due. And jeez who said I was going into the health care cause I didn’t. And to those who say for my mother to quit don’t know the first thing about her.
@sjmcgue6 жыл бұрын
Jenric I hope you never work in healthcare and I hope your mother leaves. Its not about respecting and glorifying her. Its about critical and yes, "special" care of critically ill patients. I worked in the medical field for 22 years, incuding level 1 trauma and critical care and I'll tell you, some people are just not built for it. Some bring their personal issues from home into work and into the care of critically ill patients. Get off your high horse. You probably get on your mother's nerves but instead of admitting it, she blames her job.
@Supitsjonnyboy25806 жыл бұрын
Sj McGue lmao my mom is a good person and never blames her job. She loves her job. As you know, without nurses, the hospital cannot function. But what I’m talking about is patients who complain that they don’t get what they want. It doesn’t matter if you want that drink, nurses won’t give you alcohol especially after the fact that you’re in here for intense intoxication. Nurses do what is best for your well-being. It’s not room service at a hotel.
@Supitsjonnyboy25806 жыл бұрын
Echo 9970 please read my other reply. Perhaps my word choice was off. Of course patients need care especially in the ICU. I mean that’s the point of all emergency workers is to save lives. What I’m talking about is somebody who recovers from gastric bypass and, I say this as lightly as possible, will ask the nurses for food as soon as they wake despite advice given by the doctor. Maybe that was a poor example but I hope you understood what I was reaching at. You guys have the thickest skin in the world and work tirelessly for the sake of the patient and it’s that point that I admire. I just wanted everybody else to see that point too.
@Supitsjonnyboy25806 жыл бұрын
Echo 9970 It was an example with nobody in particular being mentioned. If you replace the food part with alcohol or a cigarette and instead a liver surgery or lung treatment. Or to really exaggerate the idea, if any hospital patient has an extended stay and requests a flat screen tv because the other one is slightly small and holds little to no benefit to their health why should they receive treatment as if they are more important than every other patient. Especially if another is in more dire need and attention.

Most cases of flu are contagious for AT LEAST 7 days after you stop showing symptoms.
