Update: Colonel Gene S. Spaulding, director of the Florida Highway Patrol, released the following statement: “The Florida Highway Patrol is committed to public safety and troopers must balance the need to quickly intercept unsafe drivers while using due care to conduct traffic enforcement activities. In this instance, FHP immediately reviewed the incident and assigned additional training to the responding trooper [Bryan Zegers] on May 1, 2018, to improve overall public safety.”

So let me get this straight. The RAV4 driver is going 20 mph over the speed limit. This is considered dangerous and therefore he is to be pulled over and given a ticket. The officer that catches him goes 72mph over the speed limit along with cutting across a highway median and passing other cars on the shoulder at well over 100 mph in the name of public safety. Seems about as ass-backwards as something can get to me.

While I agree that the Trooper shouldn't have gone THAT fast (he was just trying to catch up to the car), I don't have an issue with HOW he drove. He was running lights and sirens, and on top of that, LEOs have EVOC training. That is a part of the academy where you pass or fail. Officer Zegers, your training today will include: (a) When hot exhaust sets tall dry grass on fire, backing up 3 feet into more tall dry grass is not the solution and (b) Proper operation of a fire extinguisher doesn't include a step where you look at it and say "What the hell is this"? 2:54 But first we'll start with how passing on a shoulder with a transition lip doing over 100 MPH can cause loss of control.

@@itzscop3 there isn't a plain answer to your hypothetical question. Speed is only one factor in a crash. The car going 20 over, probably swerving in and out of traffic is more of a risk than a trained high speed driver any day of the week. This is not an uncommon practice. Speeds may vary, but any officer enforcing speed limit laws usually has to speed to catch up to the offending vehicle to conduct a traffic stop. The faster the offender is going, the faster the officer must go to be able to get within range to signal the driver to stop. Once motorists decide to stop going 20 over, you will no longer have to worry about a police officer speeding to catch up to them.
