Florida Highway Patrol truck light and reflector inspection at Sneads weigh station on Interstate 10

FHP Trooper Bobby Simmons and Trooper John Sewell examine tractor-trailer lights and reflectors during a recent Level 1 inspection ahead of the June 4-6 Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance International Roadcheck blitz. Lighting violations accounted for 12 percent of out-of-service violations during last year’s blitz. The truck at the end of this video has malfunctioning marker lights which Trooper Sewell notes in his report.

That reflector on the back of the tractor is NOT a violation since he is hooked to a trailer. And before people start refer to 393.11 footnote 3. The reflectors need be at the end of the VEHICLE and in this case the trailer doors are the end of the vehicle

393.11 footnote 3 only refers to "identification lamps" not needing to be lit when they're obstructed by another unit in a combination. It doesn't reference reflective tape. If you tried to push back, I guarantee the DOT would respond with something along the lines of, "what would happen if you had a major trailer issue and had to drop it and bobtail back? Do you have spare white reflective tape and a ladder to fix that issue before bobtailing? Doubtful. Therefore, it's a violation. The tractor needs to be ready to bobtail at any time."

@aaronlehman1916 violations are written on what's there not "what if" the only reason I even wrote the reply was because I had this very thing happen and the judge threw it out based on what I just said.

Very useful information,people that do not like inspections have to realize that they are required because of the small minority that do not maintain a safe truck,having said that the majority of truckers are safe and follow the rules.

I can assure you, even the safe carriers that have really nice equipment get caught with out-of-service vehicle maintenance violations routinely. Inspections aren't just for bad carriers. Truckers miss things on their pre-trip, things happen mid-trip, even good carriers hire bad drivers that don't inspect well, anything can happen.

A long time ago i went to California and I set up my truck very organized with every small detail’s and the Officers put me inbound for inspection and he didn’t find anything wrong so he definitely needs to find something and at last he find a license plate light went out, so that’s a violation to my FMCSA score, and I definitely don’t come back to California again,

Still have to have signal lights but unless the trailer has a gross weight capacity of like 10,000+ pounds I don’t think it requires reflective tape but check your state laws

I was pulled over for the first time in 34 years, the DOT officer was very cool and professional! My truck was and always safe. I had the a hazmat sticker off and some other small stuff. I had a small light that fell out of the socket etc. No haz endorsement. I didn't Renew. Wasn't goinh to DMV during Covid! Low warning brake alarm wasn't working, etc. I received a fine for under $100.00, 1000% way more than fair, and like I said really good guy!! But here's my problem, and you can ask any driver the travels through Connecticut. Sorry drivers but, These guys are always in the third lane, Cutting people off, tailgating, I saw a tractor right on a propane trucks tail. Etc. Etc. Etc. It is lawless here in Connecticut!!! I never see the Troopers here pulling one truck over, and the drivers coming through here know that! But, they'll inspect a truck and get the driver for a light being out! I just don't get it. Is it going to take someone or a family to get killed before start enforcing the law? I hope not! Some drivers that are reading this might not like what I'm saying. But guys, thus is constant. all day and night, numerous trucks. And not in the third lane for only a few seconds. It's really bad, it's only a matter of time before people get really hurt or killed! Also, I'm not a complainer at all, this isn't a complaint, it's serious and the truth! I've been driving before many of you were an itch in your daddy's pants👖🩳 I know that I know!! Oh, 57 years to be exact!! Take care all drivers and law enforcement. Please make it home safe!!!

Yes, it's an issue everywhere but don't point the fingers at commercial drivers only. From where we sit and you can ask any trucker they'll probably agree with the statement that 6 out of 10 drivers in there 4 wheelers have the cell phone in their hand when passing a semi-truck.

xDDD the officer signaled him to flash the high beams, (the inner circles), but he didnt know how to, so switched the low beam on off. wtf??? Ive heard and seen multiple times where people instead of flashing to each other (let them in), someone said she honks (how should the other know where did it come from, what does she want to signal? stupid idea) the other one said he switches the low beam on and off... this is just peak american stupidity
