Another great job Patrick. Truth be told, most of these cars were beat to death and off the road by the mid to late 70s. I worked in a Chevrolet service dept when the 70 Chevelle was 6 years old. I recall only one coming in for service. A Cortez Silver hardtop. The owner wanted only GM parts used so he came to us. Yes there are survivors and I enjoy seeing them. However, this owner built this car to his taste as you mention. It is a beauty. Please follow up. Maybe the LS6 car missing that engine is still alive.

I'm the kind of guy that would make it my daily driver. That's just me. Cars are built to be driven. Even this beautiful car. My 1st Chevelle was a '70 and I was the second owner. I bought it from a little ol' man who ordered it with a 350, a 3 speed manual transmission on the floor, bench seat and the SS dash, with all the gauges, a 12 bolt rear, non posi. Beautiful maroon paint, black vinyl roof, tan interior, but the dash pad was black. He was from Texas and ordered it there and told me he sure did have the go arounds to get them to put the black stripes on it, because it didn't have an SS hood or a cowel induction hood. He said, "I got them put on otherwise he wouldn't take the car." Ha! The car was 7 years old when I bought it for a whopping $800 dollars. 27,000 miles on her too. I loved that car, but being broke and a 2nd baby on the way, I had to let her go. Sad, sad day. That's my story and I'm sticking to it ! Thanks everyone, bye for now.

The paint looks amazing, it's not an original #'s matching LS6, but it is built to perfection by someone that thought it was how it should be. We're always talking about cars sitting and wasting away that may never get restored, at least someone saved one and built a very nice car.

The funny part of these beautiful restorations is the car, when new, wasn't anywhere near that nice. Check out a real survivor, or one of the very rare, "taken off the transport and never driven" examples. Slapdash assembly line work, misaligned panels, overspray paint, you name it.

This car reminds me of a story my dad has told me that is true. Back in the late 80’s early 90’s when he was building his 57 Chevy for street racing he stumbled upon a 396 Big Block from a 1970 Chevelle SS396 Cranberry Red with black stripes car and the owner was selling the engine because he was cloning the car to be an LS6. The owner of the car had acquired a real LS6 for his car. This was back in I believe around 1992 in Southern California. Would be crazy if this was that car. (Edit: My dad does still have the 396 and it now sits in my uncles 65 Chevelle pro street car as my dad upgraded to a 468 Big Block for his car)

Once upon a time..long long ago...I had a friend who had a brother who had an old Chevelle sitting in their garage with 4 flat tires. When I saw that old '69 Chevy sitting there, I asked if he would sell it to me. He did. for $600... I towed it home, cleaned it up, and started to Enjoy my '69 SS396 with the Rockcrusher 4spd.. After a while of owning and restoring it, I called a friend who managed the local Chevy dealer to look up some parts for me...come to find out, I was the owner of a 425 horsepower factory race Chevelle that came from a Dealer, not supposed to be sold... I raced that car up and down California for about a year...just kid street racing stuff...and finally got around to getting it prepped for getting the Original Blue paint...that weekend it was supposed to go to a body shop? A Drunk Driver in a Mazda hit me Head On and Totaled it....but at least it didn't die...it wasn't streetable after that, but guy bought it and Track Raced it for years...oh well...my little story...I loved that car...that car would pull the front wheels in second and third....damn it was FAST...
@tylerbonser7686
@tylerbonser7686 3 жыл бұрын
Your story makes as much sense as a empty piggy bank. So the car was totaled and wasn't steerable but was able to be raced? I'm assuming it was drag raced and drag cars have to be far safer than Street cars so don't get how it couldn't have been made to drive on the road again. Also you say the car could pull the front tires in second and third gear, do you mean it could actually lift the front tires off the ground on the street?

I was 20 years old when this car was made and was a total motorhead. I had two friends with 375-396 Chevies, we were into street racing, I had a '66 Caprice 396-TH400 that ran high 14's. I do not remember EVER seeing a Chevy product with Polyglas tires until the 70 1/2 Camaros with F60 Polyglas GT's. Polyglas tires were the hot setup for Pure Stock classes back then, they were much better than the Goodyear Wide Treads that came on Corvettes, the Uniroyals that came on my friend's '68 Camaro RS-SS, the Firestone Sport Car 200's and Wide Tread GT's that came on '68-69 Z-28's. @@onoffroad Actually if it is a '70 it came with a 402 as by that time the actual 396cid had been retired and replaced with the 402cid. I bought a '70 Corvette back in the '90's. It had a 454/4 speed. The engine had the stamp pad crudely ground off and restamped as a '71 LS6. The engine designation on the console was also changed with '71 LS6 specs. I assumed the engine was just a run of the mill 454. It had a GM aluminum intake though. After driving the car all summer, including a couple of runs at the drag strip, it ran 13.20's at 105 with a lot wheel spin, I decided to do some work to the engine. I removed the intake to discover it had rectangular port heads. After checking dates and casting numbers it turned out to be a complete '70 LS6. I sold it to a guy restoring a '70 LS6 Chevelle. He even stated that the intake was an original LS6 intake although he said that Chevelles used a spacer and it was not on the Corvette for hood clearance. I assume he knew what he was talking about. Anyway, I took the money and built an oval port headed 454 that put my Corvette down in the low 12's and it wasn't nearly as high strung.

@@patrickglennnicholsmusclec1674 The last 6 digits (138803) should match the last 6 digits of the VIN. The CRV means LS6 4-speed. The real problem here is who knows if that pad was restamped after having the block decked? If the VIN on this car does have 138803 as the last 6 digits then this may very well be a real LS6 car with a whole lot of owner additions, or, the first step in someone "building" a fake LS6. If the numbers do not match, the issue is moot.

I HAVE A 1978 BIG TEN CHEVY SILVERADO SHORT WB TRUCK I ORDERED NEW WITH THE 454 ENGINE. THE SHORT BLOCK WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT 500 MILES. THE CHEVY REP ALLOWED ME TO PAY THE DIFFERENCE, $75.00, AND GET THE LS6 SHORT BLOCK FOR REPLACEMENT WHICH I LATER FOUND OUT WAS ILLEGAL. THE REP AT THAT TIME WAS A FEMALE AND LOOKING BACK YEARS LATER IN MY OPINION WAS VERY INEXPERIENCED, BECAUSE A REP THAT WAS SAVY WOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED THAT DEAL TO FLY. I TOOK THE SOLID LIFTER LS6 CAMSHAFT OUT AND SOLD IT AND PURCHASED A HYDRAULIC AFTERMARKET CAM. THE TRUCK HAS 80,000 MILES ON IT AND I JUST BUILT A DART BLOCK 577 CI, 4.500 BORE X 4.375 STROKE, WITH EDELBROCK ALUMINUM HEADS, EDELBROCK PERFORMER AIR GAP MANIFOLD, WITH A COMP CAMS .622” SOLID LIFTER PRO STREET ROLLER CAM. THE ORIGINAL HEADS ARE 781 OPEN CHAMBER THAT I PORTED AND INSTALLED 2.19 INT. VALVES AND 1.88 EX. VALVES. THE 11.0 TO 1 LS6 PISTONS COMBINED WITH THE 781 HEADS GAVE RIGHT AT 10.0 TO 1 COMPRESSION. I WENT THROUGH THE MOTOR IN 90’S AND INSTALLED A CRANE .525” LIFT ROLLER CAM AND THE MOTOR MADE 520 HP @5000 RPM AND 530 LB. FT. OF TORQUE. IT RAN 12.90 @ 106 MPH IN THE QUARTER ON STREET TIRES AND PULLED MY 26’ ENCLOSED CAR TRAILER WITH MY 68 CAMARO TO THE TRACK. OH, I INSTALLED A SET OF HOOKER HEADERS ON DAY 2 AS THEY SAY. I ORDERED IT WITH A 3.73 POSI REAR AND BUILT THE T400 TRANS WITH A B&M TRANS KIT AND 13” B&M TRAVELER TORQUE CONVERTER.

We did this on a 71 Chevelle in the late 90"s as we had the powertrain out of a total wreck Chevelle with no powertrain issues. We restored another Chevelle and put in the new powertrain and all the proper badging. We sold it with full facts for a small fortune to a "driver" collector. Value is based on the buyer and we knew all the factory details on the powertrain and was able to just replace the body and knew its history. No where near the value of a perfect numbers matching that has never had a body panel replaced.
