Florida Mango Tastings 2020: Piña Colada, Pineapple Pleasure, Diamond, Little Gem Mangoes

In this video we are tasting Piña Colada, Pineapple Pleasure, Diamond and Little Gem varieties of mangoes. Piña Colada & Pineapple Pleasure were obtained from Walter Zill home fruit stand, and Diamond was from Zill high performance plants nursery in Boynton Beach, FL. Little Gem is from a friend in Coral Springs, FL who goes by the name of 'mangokothiyan' in Tropical fruit forum.
Disclaimer: We all know that different mango varieties have different flavors; some have a classic mango taste, some have citrusy sweetness, some - tones of peach, pineapple, guava; some a cocktail of many tropical fruits and some have floral smell and flavor tones, so they cannot compete or be compared. Nor can they be given points like 1-10, as taste is very personal and subjective, varies from person to person and culture to culture. Also, the same mango variety grown in different parts of Florida will taste different depending on changes in microclimate, annual rainfall, soil health, mineral and salt content, fertigation regimen (irrigation+fertilization), etc. Lastly, mango picked early / not fully mature vs picked at the peak maturity changes how they ripen off of tree; often mangoes picked green, hard & immature eventually change color and look nice but will not get optimal sweetness (brix) or the complexity of flavor that makes mango such a unique and tasty fruit.

Any mango variety grown in its optimal growing condition would be superior in taste to any other best mango in the world. Most newer varieties of mango trees in our garden are still young to produce except a few trees, so we source them from growers around which we disclose in video descriptions. Some of the fruit we consider ready we pick from their trees ourselves. Plus, there are some varieties that just got released this year, or last year, or 2 yrs ago which no home grower has been able to grow yet, so we cannot (and won’t!) grow all the mangoes we taste in our videos; it makes no sense to us to grow a tree first and taste the variety later. And even then, taste from tree to tree of the same mango variety varies; plus year to year, even month to month there is variability. We thought every mango lover would understand that, but seems that some people are hurt and want to attack me personally. This will not be tolerated. Let’s have a healthy discussion instead! Please comment on how you felt tasting these mangoes this year instead, and make your own videos; the more diverse the taste of each mango the better, it is for everyone to learn - let’s avoid personal attacks, let’s be constructive and creative. As I said many times before, we are all different, and different opinions are welcome!

Another great testing video, I loved it. Your dog is very cute. I did tried to order Himsagar and Amrapali manga sion from tropical acres twice,it is not available ! Thanks again for your advice.

Thank you. Availibility of some mango scions is limited as they grow pretty slow. Perhaps try again from tropical acres in spring time next year.

@@growpuravida I don't understand how a fruit can be spicy. When I think spicy, I think pepper. Describe what you mean by spicy.

Some mango varieties, because of turpenes, have same spicy tones as pepper. Different spices, actually: some have undertones of piper nigrum, some of cayenne and chili pepper... same exact sensation on your tongue mixed with classic sweet flavor of mango. It adds complexity to the taste, not just being sweet or sour. you have to try more Indian and Haitian varieties to experience / understand this.
