Your videos are so peaceful and thank you for making them. I watch or rewatch one of your videos right before I go to bed because I love how you take us along and explain the shells/area but you also just let the sounds of nature in. So many vloggers won't let there be quiet times in a video and fill it with loud music. I feel like I am right there on the beach with you instead of cold Ohio ! :)

I'm so glad you like them! I prefer to hear some of the ocean in the background and to cut down on the wind by making a recording once I'm home instead of trying to do it on the beach. It’s actually totally therapeutic to watch your videos, you do a great job and even though you’re walking we don’t get dizzy watching 😉. I am in the centra FL area and I can’t not find a conch shell for the life of me! I did find a live one, but of course I put him back! Thanks for the great videos!!

Wow, what a great shell haul for this walk on the beach. Congratulations on finding a scotch bonnet. Loads of lightning whelks. Liked the crab critter. Really nice true tulip. Loved the blonde Florida fighting conch. Fort Myers beach really had a whole lot of shells this time. Gorgeous lace murex. It was a really successful shell day. Thanks for taking us along on your walk. It was lots of fun.

Good haul again! Great yellow scallop which is always a treat & awesome lace murex! Congrats on your scotch bonnet, even if broken and bleached still a great find. They are pretty elusive but you can find them after storms (I've found 5 in SWFL all after storms). All those live shells are so cool but when you find those truly spectacular shells and you can't keep them it's really sad LOL. I usually forget about those but there's still a scotch bonnet that haunts me to this day. Not exactly sure what the shell at 18:27 is, but I feel like it would have been more concave if it was the other side of a flat. The shell at 24:03 is a White Atlantic Semele. Cool to find it hinged! I am surprised you didn't get any of the giant shells on that day. I've found many many large shells after winter storms like this and I find it kind of bizarre that you didn't get any. Maybe they were there earlier? Different beach perhaps? Not sure but shelling can be very unpredictable.
@SWFBeachLife3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think someone might have gotten to the beach before me and gotten all the big shells. I'm just glad they left a little something for me to find - LOL! A White Atlantic Semele - very cool. I never in a million years would have figured that one out. You're funny you mention a shell haunting you - someone dropped a baby's ear in Captiva in the water and lost it last week. I think all us shellers have at least one of those! I found the spikiest crown conch I've ever found at Bunch and I'll be sharing that next Sunday. Also stopped back over at Lover's Key, so I may combine them into one video - I'll have to see what footage I got. Thanks so much for watching!! Can't wait to see your next shelling adventure too!
@shellstories3 жыл бұрын
@@SWFBeachLife Yeah, it may be the big ones were out earlier. In a situation like that when it's a winter post-storm day I'd say get out there as early as possible, even at night can be really good even if it's not timed with tides well but still after a storm. Bunche beach always has the BEST crown conchs. I found some real nice spiky ones there too and even one that appears to have a double row of spines which is super cool up in the high tide line! Haven't cleaned those up yet but I'm sure they will be spectacular. (They'll make into videos too I just fell behind with making them LOL.)

That light purplish shell is a semele. I’ve never found a double! I’ve found them more often in the 10,000 island area. Oh, and that was a tulip egg casing, not a horse conch. They look similar though. Nice lace murex too! I love it when they’re so intricate and defined that the edges are sharp!! You scored on that beach walk!

Thank YOU again, for taking us along! I look forward to seeing your posts! Yes, you are right, I'm one that is buried under 2 feet of snow. Hubby had to dig a path just to get to our bird feeders! We enjoy watching them in the snow. I do have a question. Could you tell us what kind of critters do the drilling? They must have some sharp teeth!
@SWFBeachLife3 жыл бұрын
Oh dear frozen beach friend - I sure hope Spring comes early! There are a few critters that will drill holes: Apple murex, Shark Eye, Atlantic oyster drill to name a few. They have what is called a radula, which is kind of like a tentacle with a bunch of teeth on the end. The snail will secret an acid to weaken the shell and then using this radula it will drill a hole in it's prey. Then, once the hole is drilled they will use that radula to kind of chop up it's mean and then slurp it out! I'm not an expert but that's basically the gist of how it work. Gross and cool right?

I felt the need to share this personal information with you... I suffered a serious spinal injury about 15+ years ago and am disabled. Now I have a hard time walking any moderate distance. Your channel reminds me of my pre-injury days when I took oh-so many Florida vacations as a child and an adult. I love it every time you bend down and pick up a shell and share the beauty the shoreline has to offer. With every video I can almost feel the sun and ocean breezes on my face, hear the waves crashing, and the warm water and sand on my feet and hands. I love seeing the little details like the powdery wet sand on your fingers and how after you've been shelling for a while your finger tips get prune-y. Lol! It really brings me back to the ocean and I love it. Thank you so much for sharing! Your videos really brighten my day!

Thank you so much for sharing this with me. A lot of people tell me they feel like they are on the beach with me, which is EXACTLY what I would like people to feel. The beach. My mother was also mobility challenged so I am rather sensitive to this and try to include info about stairs or access when it makes sense. I recently went to Lover's Key (that video is week after this Sunday) and they rent beach wheelchairs for free! I'll show you and provide the number, just in case people who have that need would be interested. Thank you for taking the time to write this comment and thank you for coming along with me on my beach walks!

What an amazing finds! That Lace Murex is stunning!😍 What on earth happened with all the "left facing" Angel wings? It became quite hilarious that you only found the "right facing" ones. 😂 The wind and sea makes it almost feel like you're on a Dutch beach. Only the high sand dunes are missing. It's almost impossible, but when you were at the beach, it was even colder than here in the Netherlands. Last week it was freezing(5°F), snowy and people were ice skating. Now it is spring and 63°F and people walking around without a coat on. It's even the warmest 21th of February ever. But I won't complain at all. Bring on the sunshine and warmth, I desperately need it. 😎 By the way, no complaints about this beach, I'm quite happy if you went only looking for sea shells on this beach. 😉 Thank you for taking me out to the beach. Wishing you a wonderful week. Stay safe and healthy. 😘

I have soooooooo many shells from Florida and Texas. Even have about two handfuls of that beautiful White Sand. I am so glad I found your channel. My family and myself use to go to Florida EVERY summer. We would always come back with shell jewelry. Pooca (???) Shell necklaces. Can you give me a few names of places/stores that sell that kind of stuff that I could order from online?? Please, it would be so much appreciated. Even t-shirts. Hopefully here in the near future, I will be moving to Florida. I don't care where, but somewhere. There's just nothing left for me here in Arkansas. Anywho. I will be so thankful to you for a couple/few names that sell that jewelry and t-shirts. Again thank you for sharing. Beautiful stuff.

Hellooo from Florida! I am so sorry I can't help you! I honestly have no idea where to tell you to find those necklaces. I know exactly the ones you're talking about but I am not sure where the best place to buy them would be! I normally spend my time on the beach and not so much in shops. I bet there are tons of those stores on both Sanibel as well as Fort Myers Beach but not sure if any of them have online stores. I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help!

I enjoy your beach outings. I am sorry you didn't have good luck when you visited Coral Cove. It is hit or miss dependent on the weather. My point is, I have found approx 30 scotch bonnets on that beach after a storm with high waves. I hope you will give it another chance. 😊

Shelling for those on vacation and those who live near a beach with shells is so different! I'll be at the beach and come across someone with an over stuffed ziplock bag with tons of broken everything in it---> person on vacation LOL! But I get it. Congrats on your first yellow scallop! I won't tell you how common they are up here...whoops! Funny, I found 3 beautiful pearlized Atlantic winged oysters yesterday! Have you ever found one with the periostracum on it? Last time at Lido, I saw several pairs wash up. Looks like you had a great lightning whelk day like we did after the wind!☺️ Yep, that's a shark eye sand collar. Weird pen shell with a ffc attached! I had the same experience with 1-sided cockles one day when I was trying to find a pair. Yay!!! You found a Scotch bonnet! Yippee!! Don't you just love it when there's a ton of stuff to look at on the beach? The white scallop you found very well could be part of a zig zag; however I have found that almost all the white or "Siamese" white ones I find are domed as well (I have a whole bag of them for crafts). Speaking of crafts, those big dosinia pairs make great night lights with a little hot glue.☺️ Beautiful true tulip! That big yellowish pear whelk is awesome! I believe you found a purple semele! Or the other semele. I have a cat on my lap so I'm not going to get up to get my book... Gorgeous lace murex!!! So was this the video I've been waiting for??? It was an awesome day for you. I'm so happy for you! XXOO

This must be the one since the other days I went to the beach were "after." Ok, so when I finally do come up by you, I'll be looking for chestnut turbans and yellow scallops. AWESOME! I have never found an Atlantic winger oyster other than the one in this video. I sometimes will pick up shells that I have no idea what they are and feel like it's going to be something cool. Maybe next time it will have its periostracum on it :) YOU HAVE A CAT ON YOUR LAP is the best! I use that excuse all the time to not get up and find things. Oh what these creatures do to us - LOL!! I found another KILLER shell recently. I'll share that next Sunday. Have a great week beach friend!

I’m planning a trip to FL next month. Are the hotels in Ft. Myers alright to stay at? And if you had to pick just one beach for shelling, which would it be?
@SWFBeachLife3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hotels in FMB are fine but of course you need to read reviews to make sure you get an idea of what you're getting into :) I would pick Fort Myers Beach if I had to choose just one beach to go to. That being said, it's a Long Beach (7-8 miles) and I would go shelling on the south end of the island. There are lots of condos and hotels on the South end (look into The Outrigger area) and you can go shelling right from your hotel/condo. And of course watching the sunset from the beach each evening is pretty spectacular too :)
@emdee77443 жыл бұрын
Question: what type of bag do you use to collect your shells in? I would love to beachcomb, but other than a plastic shopping bag, I don"t know the best way to collect to carry and transport while at the beach so I don't damage any specimens.

What is your glue mix for sealing the sands. Really enjoying your videos.
@SWFBeachLife2 жыл бұрын
I seal sand dollars with a 1:1 mixture of white glue (like Elmers) to an equal part of water. Mix it real good and paint it on! You can do more than one coat - those sand dollars are very porous!
