Six squatters were arrested after drugs were found inside a home in a Holly Hill neighborhood that was supposed to be a vacant home.

@@frankmacleod2565 Yes I did, The issue is the Sheriff sees these people as squatting, When in fact its burglary and you do not need an owner to press changes the county can bring charges. Squatting is when you try to take adverse possession of land. Even though the owner passed away the estate owns until it passes to next of kin. If the next of kin dose not take ownership then you can squat.

I had lived next to a problem property that had gone vacant. I was very close to suddenly have the structure mysteriously burn down. Unfortunately, it did not happen. More problem tenants moved in because a slumlord purchased it. I learned a life lesson. Regret is the worst.

@gndg5351, unfortunately, that's what some old people want; to live alone and die alone. Good example is my 92 year old mom, a big-time hoarder. She is furious that we, her three daughters, have taken over her care and well-being. For years, she forbade us from visiting her and see how she lived. It's a good thing that mom had prepared a POA years ago, and I, the oldest daughter was able to put it into effect after she suffered a cerebral stroke. I am certain that squatters would have taken over her house had we not taken any action and done an intervention. The youngest daughter relocated and moved in with mom. Her place has been cleaned up, we all cook her favorite meals, bake for her, take her to her medical appts, make sure she gets her meds, etc . . . , and she is still unhappy and miserable. No, she is not depressed just very angry she cannot go back to her old lifestyle. So, yes, some old folks want to live and die alone. Go figure.

When squatters lose their cases in a court of law , there should be an immediate walk thru of that property. If they decided to trash said house before leaving should earn you an immediate trip to jail where they will be incarcerated for a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in prison not camp cupcake!

IF the city wanted that piece of property for a drainage pond, a road widening, or even public parking they'd already own it. What should be done is the property itself should be offered to adjoining neighbors who would pay for demolition and cleanup as their cost to absorb the property into their own. Or the County should demolish and clean up the property and auction off the lot to the highest bidder.

There needs to a ONE federal law for "Squatters" with serious penalties, like they have for " hate crimes " or "domestic terrorism" etc. Too many states have too many different laws and it just makes this issue near impossible to combat.
