I'm so sorry you are feeling under the weather with Covid. It's a horrible disease that I got last year at 69-70. It took me months to get over it and my energy was totally depleted. Not only that, but it takes forever getting that energy back. I wish you well. Don't worry about getting out to the beach other than possibly "baking" that out of you. Take your time and feel better!! That is the most important thing, Shar. We all love you here, but your well being is more important. We will understand. You take GOOD care of yourself, Shar. Big long distant hugs to you from ALL of us here!! Take care, Beach friend. 🏖🐚❤🙏

I hope you are feeling much better now. Fresh ocean air is a healer ❤️ The crown conch!!!! I was like outloud to the TV, “whaaaaaat!” So excited for you w/that find! A stunner! I want to personally thank you for the tip about crossing that condo building that sticks out in the water-to walk out a little bit to avoid the “dip” near the boulders! I’m envious in how low you crossed it in this video! I was there for the first time a few days after Debby and had to cross it coming back and at the lowest tide it was still a tad above waist deep and rough. I remembered what you said and did that. I walked like I was mounted on a horse as to NOT loose my footing. I made it! Thank you! On the way out there I did chicken out and had the help/permission of a condo manager & a nice couple to guide me around the building. Thank heavens they were there at the right time and “willing” to help me but I had no problem if I had to turn back or wait it out….anyways, I had a lovely walk out there allllll the way to the end. I couldn’t believe how many shells were at the end there! I could have spent all day but knew I had to get back to cross that building. Sorry this comment is so long 🙃. Take care and happy shelling.
@SWFBeachLife3 ай бұрын
I hope they do beach replenishment to get that building further away from the water. It wasn't like that before the hurricane and of course now they have that wall so it makes it even more treacherous. I'm glad my tip helped you get around that! I myself have hopped up and walked the wall to safely navigate that area and I'd do it again if I had to! I'm glad you got to experience one of my more favorite places on Earth!

So sorry you weren’t feeling well. I think if I lived near the beach, I’d be out there too, sitting in a beach chair…better than laying in bed. But, I know COVID is tough, hopefully it didn’t last too long for you. I have been watching your videos for so long now, that I’m seeing things you are passing up! LOL. I saw so many rose petal telons lying there. I think because I only found one when I went down last winter, I was especially in tune to the pinks as you shelled. 😄 Thank you for your wonderful, wonderful videos. This year I had a new appreciation for what was at my closest beach at the Jersey Shore (where shells are few and far between.) I instead enjoyed studying all the beautiful pebbles. I noticed differences in shells and stones that I had overlooked in the past. Thanks for all the lessons! I also can no longer leave a single piece of trash on the beach, which is tough when one forgets to take a bag along! So, really, your beach trash total is higher, because of the trash you have influenced others to get off the beach! 😁
@SWFBeachLife3 ай бұрын
OOOoooooo - my trash total is higher because of the people I encouraged to take trash off the beach. Oh I love this so much 🥰 I never even thought of that. We used to like to go to Seaside Park in early October for my husbands birthday. Some years we froze our tails off - other years we were running around in bathing suits. I hope you had a great time. We have almost no rocks here so I have to concentrate all my hunting for shells 🐚 (and I'm not complaining!!!).

I look forward to your videos each Sunday. Thank you for going out even though you didn't feel good. Have you ever considered looking for fossil shells. On the KZbin videos I've been watching (paleocris is one) they are finding the same shells you find. They are in Florida on creeks mostly but also other places. Some of the shells are so well preserved. They get so excited when they find one. I would love to see your reaction to they same shells you find only in fossil form.
@SWFBeachLife3 ай бұрын
I have not really considered looking for fossilized shells. I have found a few by accident on the beach (likely from someone's parking lot - we don't have rocks here, just old shells) and I've seen Paleo Chris and Wild Kyle look for fossils, but the only fossils I'd really like to find are giant shark teeth. I prefer the pristine shells from the beach I guess 🤷♀️

Even through the camera lens the difference in condition between the various nutmegs is apparent, not just richness of color but also texture. I can usually see what you are describing with other shells also, and all the color & pattern variations make them endlessly fascinating . Lace murex are stunning, but those chunky colorful apple murex are a long standing favorite of mine. The blend of colors on a moon snail reminds me of the quiet beauty of a salt marsh -- or a female cardinal. BTW, my mom taught us to use the word "hate" very sparingly, and never about people. I can hear her saying, "Hate starts wars." However -- I think it's fine to hate trash, especially on the beach! We were at a beach house in NC during "Debbie week," getting in our beach time between the showers and downpours. I bet there were tons of shells washed up the following week. So it goes. Sure hope you're 100% again soon!
@SWFBeachLife2 ай бұрын
Sometimes I wonder if other people can see what I see, just because I've picked up and examined quite a few shells at this point. I can pretty much evaluate it in seconds - but I try to give the pretty ones ample camera time 😂 I also wish people could hold one of these shells, to feel it's weight and smoothness, or appreciate the spikiness and the different textures. The beach is so fascinating! And yes...the shells do tend to make an appearance after these storms. It's a shame we can't time these things. I do remember talking to a woman over on Sanibel after a storm one year. She had traveled down just to go post-storm shelling. I don't know where the shells were - but they didn't make it to the beach !

I Googled the pink sand, and this is what it said: The almost indescribable pale pink color of the sand comes from microscopic coral insects, known as Foraminifera, which have a bright pink or red shell full of holes through which it extends pseudopodia, footings that it uses to attach itself and feed.

Will be in Orlando for a few days for a conference and then after that, I want to travel down to that area Fort Myers/Sanibel !! I’m wondering if you can tell me the best place to park to get to that spot that you say is the best part of shelling on that beach if you can tell me! I would greatly appreciate it!! The last time I was down there I didn’t really look for shells on Fort Myers. I went to Sanibel, and that was before the hurricane wiped out everything. I’m hoping that everything is being built back up and I know in time it will all be gorgeous again and it is gorgeous always because the beach and the ocean are still there!!

@@SWFBeachLife I’ll def. intro myself if I see you! Crazy Wisconsinite who loves collecting shells…and rocks. 😏 Planning to do an Ally tour again, I think…unless we rent a boat this trip. Weather dependent, of course!

COVID is not our friend! Glad you're better. The top of the LW at 10 min. would make a really pretty pendant. I save them.😊 Ok, that crown beat mine hands down. Beautiful! Nutmegs galore! Angel wings do fine in bleach water. Just make sure they're on top! I see pink sand up here too. I'm guessing it has to do with algae but I'm not sure. Sorry to hear you lost some turtle nests .😢 Looking forward to next week!!👍 Thanks Sharmon! xxoo

Pink sand is from single cell critters that CAN MAKE A SHELL! They're called forams - well, that's short for a long, much more complicated word. I always see pink sand at Bunche - next time I'll dive into the pink sand. Ok, that crown conch might have been nice but I haven't found a seahorse in years!! ❤️

I love the coloring of nutmegs. They look almost plaid. What's the biggest nutmeg you've ever found?

I honestly think that one I found on this trip was one of the biggest I've ever found. I just checked my "Special box" and now I want to know which of my nutmegs is the biggest!

I want soooo badly to fly from Pennsylvania and go shelling in SW Florida. Been wanting to the last couple of years. I'm going to find a way this winter to just make the trip. If I cone myself, I can keep it cheap. When I have gone on vacation, I never need to go to fancy places or spend a lot of money. I could just sit in a shell pile all day and pick through them and look at all the colors and patterns and that is all I would need!
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
I love saving money, so coming here can be done without breaking the bank. Winter is the most expensive time to be here, but the shells are easier to find. Summer shells hide, but the prices on accommodations are much more reasonable.

Well if that’s a poor summer collection, sign me up! also sorry for you being sick and poorly with COVID, pretty horrid but hopefully you’re done with it now. Lovely video as always. Hugs (from behind a surgical mask as I don’t want your diseases!!), stay safe xx

As I was leaving I kind of had the chills, even though it was blooming hot out there. I was relieved to get off the beach, go take a shower and crash on the couch. Man I was tired for a while there but all better now and ready to take on new adventures!! I feel an East Coast trip coming up....

Pink sand maybe comes from shells? They used to dye clothes with shells back in the roman times 🥸🥰 I know sand and clothes are different, but certain fermentation and alchemy can release colours… idk 😊
@SWFBeachLife3 ай бұрын
Yes, the purple color wore by royals came from murex snails! Turns out the pink color is from single celled organisms that can create shells. When they die the color the sand pink. It's an amazing world out there!
