Memphis and the suburbs have always been bad as I've lived in Memphis for 40+ yrs. But the worst neighborhoods are Frayser, Hickory Hill ( Hickory Hood), New Chicago, North Memphis, South Memphis, West Wood, Whitehaven,Binghampton Berclair, Cordova near Cordoba high school and Berryhill as well as Orange Mound. Orange Mound was the 1st all black founded neighborhood after desegregation.But after the suburbs (county) were annexed around the year 2000 the crime increased and people left the city and moved to the country like Cordova, Lakeland, Germantown, Bartlett and Collierville. But Cordova, Germantown and Bartlett have sceen a rise in crimes since the early 2000's.
@swinde Жыл бұрын
Orange Mound is an original Black Neighborhood and was founded in 1890 and was built for black people. Most of the other neighborhoods of the black community are are former all white communities that were abandoned during the period of "white flight" beginning in the mid 1960s and the white people moved to the county to the southeast, east and also to Southaven, MS, Germantown, and Bartlett and Cordova. Other small black enclaves from the days of sharecroppers and slavery exist at White Station near the Clark Tower, Whitehaven Lane, and other places around the city. I lived there until late 1990, and there were area where you had to be alert but in general that city wasn't that frightful. Last time I was there was in 1998 and it had deteriorated some more, but it is not a war zone like the media portrays it.

Memphis is interesting that despite it being a major city in the sun belt it is declining in population (not sure if Birmingham would be considered a major city). Even the Memphis Metro area barely grew in 2020 with the Detroit Metro Area out growing it.
@jKLa2 жыл бұрын
Birmingham is certainly a major metro and yes the city itself is considered fairly major as well. Both cities are really part of a Southern rust belt of sorts that correlates very roughly but highly imperfectly with the Southern Black Belt, but extending into the northern and western Appalachian rust belt which in turn extends to the classic Midwest and inner northeast rust belt. The Deep South rust belt starts in deep east Texas and extends as all the way into South Carolina. It's just that most of the cities and metro areas in that region are relitively small.

what's wrong with having $600 rent ... why does it matter that rents are cheaper here than many other places that think their supposed to rip off the locals with $ 1000 plus dollars rent per month
