I used the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet paper to wind my yarn around. I tried to hand cake up the yarn and I ended up with the result you did. It still knitted up just fine right from the tube. You could use the cardboard from paper towel, and you get a few bonus tubes when you cut it up. Welcome little Lily😊

That is nice colorway for your beanie WIP. Because you don't have a yarn swift and ball winder, you could see if you have a chair where the top backing is the width of the skein. Otherwise you can enlist your husband to hold the yarn loop in his hands like when you play Cat's Cradle. When you wind the ball, wind it so many times horizontally and then switch to winding the yarn vertically. Then switch again, etc. Yay for another knitta into the fold. Knittaz unite! You can ask me questions too. I've been knitting since 2008.

I love your new puppy! Thank you for rescuing her and showering her with love and kisses! Your stitching is beautiful! When I make a ball of yarn I do start out with what looks like a Hank of yarn. I fold in the sides and as I wind the yarn I make it into a ball. It may not be pretty but it serves the purpose. Good luck with your knitting! Your hat will turn out just fine. Take your time and do not put too much pressure on yourself. Everyone has to start somewhere! Right?

All you do to wind yarn on a ball is lay the yarn on a table start with one end of loose yarn. Wind the yarn into a figure 8 around three fingers of your non dominate hand and then begin winding around the figure 8, turning the "wad" of yarn as you go to form a ball shape. It will be misshapen in the beginning but just keep turning as you wind and a ball will form. I have found a bowl most handy to keep your yarn in as you knit if you don't want to chase your yarn from under your chair etc, The other thing that is very helpful is a knitters friend which will help you recover and weave in any stitches you may drop. Hope you find some of this helpful. My grandmother taught me to begin to knit but I did not have anyone around me to help with my questions and goofs. I picked it back up about 40 years later by joining a knitting group in a local yarn store. This was before KZbin so I also utilized a knitters dictionary and a few other reference books with pictures. I have made sweaters, socks. Housesocks for my husband that I added leather bottoms to and t-shirts since I live in FL. Have fun with your new hobby. Love your new fur baby!❤

A word of caution, you did mention your yarn was from an alpaca company but didn’t say what the content of your yarn is…alpaca unlike wool has no memory and depending on the percentage of it within the yarn is not suitable for a hat. I would say no more than 25% alpaca would still work but more than that it will stretch and fall over ur eyes, ears, etc. I want you to be successful in your first endeavor into knitting!❤ Good luck!🧶

That’s awesome that Lily is in such a lucky new member of your family. We rescued (actually my daughter thought we needed a new dog). She had 1 more day. She ended up being a great dog. I often wonder if our little furry friends ever realize when they go to such a great home. You have a great start on your goal. When you said the word quarter I immediately thought of school teacher. There are a couple great yarn stores in the Cincinnati area that have ball winders. Just a regular ball is also a good option. However, I would keep it in the bag as you’re knitting to keep the ball from traveling around.

You wrap the yarn around your fingers about 30 or forty times until the wrap you’ve made is thick enough to grasp in your hand. Then you slip the yarn off your fingers and grab it in your fist with half of the yarn concealed in your fist and half of the yarn sticking out. Make sure that the END of the yarn that you started with is part of the yarn that’s hidden in your fist. Then you start wrapping the yarn tightly around the half of the yarn that’s sticking out from your fist, and it will start to form a ball. It is definitely helpful to have someone hold the skein while you do this so your yarn doesn’t get tangled.

Your new fur baby is adorable! Don’t know if you solved your yarn problem but anytime I get a mess of yarn because I had to rip out a bunch I use a paper towel tube. Cut a slit in it to hold the yarn and just start wrapping it around. It’s easy to maneuver the yarn through when you have to untangle. The you would just work from that.

Place the yarn over/around the back of a chair to hold the hank while you ball it (that’s what the yarn comes in) a skein of yarn you can knit from (think red heart acrylic) and then a ball/cake.

Try winding the yarn around an empty toilet roll tube or something similar, then you can rotate it as you are winding, carrying the yarn one diagonally from left to right (lots of videos out there if you search!) Good luck!

I do recommend slipping your yarn over a chair back before it gets too tangled. Then when you wind it in your cake or ball, it will feed off the chair back fairly easily. I hope you get as much fun out of knitting as I do. Right now I am knitting a Three Wishes baby blanket for a family member. You are suppose to think of 3 wishes you have for the new baby while knitting. Your wishes will be woven into the blanket. I think it is a sweet sentiment. Happy stitching!

Well with the yarn. You do wrap around your fingers. After it gets a big take off your fingers and just start wrapping the yarn around the yarn your took off your fingers. Just keep wrapping around by turn the yarn around and around

So happy you adopted Lily. Now Daisy has a gal pal. Love your progress on My Blue Heaven. I’m so happy you’re joining in on the Beanie Along - me too. I have some experience with crochet but I’ve never knitted. I try to learn one new thing a year - keeps the brain sparking. I don’t have a yarn twirly thingy (swift) either so I laid out my skein on a table in a perfect circle, then my husband held the circle between his arms while I wound it into a ball. Took a few minutes - He was a good sport about it. Think of it as husband/wife bonding time 😆

Sarah, What sweet babies. I am confident that Lily will be much loved as you love Daisy. As far as your yarn “hank”, when it is first unwound, drape the loops around the backs of 2 chairs placed back to back and spaced apart from each other to keep the loops tight. Then wind the free end around your fingers 5x and gently take off your fingers and wind opposite of the loops 3x so it looks like a mini skein of floss. Fold over the long loops in half and wind 3 more times to secure those loops into a small little “nugget” then just start winding the rest of the yarn rotating the “nugget” with each wrap of the yarn while your ball gets larger and larger. You will be using the yarn for your beanie from the outside instead of from the inside of the ball. In the future, if you buy hand dyed yarn at a specialty yarn shop, they will often wind it into a cake for you. Sometimes if you take your previously purchased yarn (like what you bought off of Amazon), they will wind it for you for a small fee or as a gratuity if you have purchased other items from them (such as stitch markers or needles).
