Sea Fishing for Flounder on the Tidal River Usk in Newport, South Wales. This river flows into the Severn Estuary/Bristol Channel. Join me as I attempt to catch an early Winter Flounder at 'The Old Faithful', next to Newport Transporter Bridge, one of my favourite fishing spots. Very mixed weather on this occasion but enjoyable all the same.
Thank you for watching, it is much appreciated.

Great session, very enjoyable to watch. About the flounder fishing. I don't know if this applies regional or not, but up here in Scotland 80% of the time I catch them on the top hook and also you catch them here 90% on mackeral in the winter and 90% on worms in the summer. Yes, the flounder is a flat fish and lives mostly hiding in the sand or pebbles, but it also is a predator and will pursue pray. The reason for the mackeral is I believe as the worms are going very deep in the winter, it's not a reliable food source for the flounder in the winter. Anyway, looking forward to your next session.
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Nice to hear from you again and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. That's very interesting what you've just said aboiut the Flounder and it makes perfect sense, with the worms going deeper in winter etc, thanks for sharing. Years ago we used to get many big Flounder in the River but these days, they are not so common unfortunately. Earth worm tipped with Squid used to be bait of choice, usually did the trick. I bet the fishing in great in your part of the world, probably better than down here. Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍👍

Fantastic Video Gareth. My son and I always watch all of your videos. We can’t wait for the next one. I hope you don’t mind but we have a very brief question. We are planning on fishing the transporter bridge ‘old faithful’ location on Monday. The tide is 12 metres and high tide is 08:18 am. Would you have a recommend time to be there? And is a 12 metre tide safe? Thanks Gareth. Please keep the videos coming!!!
@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme Жыл бұрын
Thank you mate, glad to hear that you and your son enjoy the videos, great stuff. In my opinion, the tide is a bit big for the old faithful on Monday, the current will be strong on both the flood and the ebb and holding bottom could be an issue. High water will be ok but either side of that will be tricky. It's a nice size tide for St Brides (lighthouse) though, that could be a better option for Monday and I'd probably opt for three instead. Cheers 👍👍

@riversidewithme
@riversidewithme 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed. I was using 6oz weights as the current can be strong, especially as the tide is coming in. A 4oz gripper would be ok on high water when slack but you may struggle either side of high to be honest. Like yourself I also enjoy fishing light when I can but at this mark, sea tactics are required in my opinion. If you are going to use a 4oz, then very short casts close to the bank and you might be ok 👍👍

At the moment this spot is closed off as the flood defence embankment is being upgraded. It will be closed until next Summer unfortunately.

@@GFrecovery-repair No problem Florin. When fishing around Newport, you want to be there two hours before high water. So for example, high tide tomorrow is 17:07pm and so you want to arrive no later than 3:07pm. The tide height tomorrow/Thursday is ok for Goldcliff and from Friday and all weekend the tide height is good for St Brides 👍
