Thanks so much. I think the flow hive is a great way to go for the small beekeeper. You do not have to buy an extractor, strainers and put so much time in extracting the honey.
@BugFarmerBees4 жыл бұрын
I agree if you are only going to have one or two hives. However, if you plan to have more hives you may want to wove to standard Langstroth. Bees have this habit of expanding their numbers. i started last year with two hives, but the end of my first year I had 4 hives. Now, at the end of my second year I have 10 hives. :-) Thanks for watching.

I agree with you, because I have only one flow bee hive, as they allow me to have, in my back yard because i live in subdivision,. I got 3 1/2 gallons in 1st time i have a Supper flow hive in June last year 2021
@markpannewig24609 ай бұрын
Hey mate. Great Vid. If I can make a suggestion, the extraction gap can be way smaller than flow make it. Just enough to put the extraction tubes in. It should help with keeping box rigidity. I find using it as a view port quite pointless. You should always take the frames out & inspect them prior to extraction. I also place a mat underneath the flow box during extraction, so that any leaking honey doesn’t go into the brood box (specifically the queen). Also, I’ve replaced the peaked flow lid with a standard flat lid.

Thank you for the great flow hive hacks. I was looking at the diagram of the flow hive frames, and they seem to be 51 mm or 2 inches wide. The cell body width seems to be 38 mm or 1 1/2 inches. This is a 12.7 mm or 1/2-inch larger honey cell storage size than a typical super frame honey cell of 25.4 mm or 1 inch. This would leave about 1/2-inch space for the bee space with 1/4 inch on each side of the frame cells. When you put the flow frames together, then you would have two 1/4-inch spaces together for a total of 1/2 inch bee space between the flow cells which is larger than the typical 3/8 total bee space and results in the bees making extra wax comb and cross comb. Although we would want to keep the 3/8-inch bee space in the brood box. The larger 1/2 space seems to work well for the flow frames. What is your experience with the bees using the Flow Frames and do they make any extra wax or cross comb? Thank you
@BugFarmerBees Жыл бұрын
Hi Barry. I have never experienced an issue with cross comb in the flow box. I have seen them draw out, fill, and cap honey on the flow frames proud of the comb face but never cross comb or burr comb. I think it is similar to placing 7 frames evenly spaced in an 8 frame honey super, the bees just extend the face of the comb to store more honey. All of that said, this system does work as advertised and the above situation almost never happens and is no big deal when it does. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for stopping in and taking time to comment. I hope to see you in future comments. Take care.

Thanks. If you want a flow hive this is the way to go. That said, if you are interested in beekeeping I would highly recommend getting a couple of inexpensive Langstroth hives and make it happen. I own two flow hives and kind of view them as novelty hives. Flowhives for me, as with you, were what engaged me in beekeeping. If I am to be honest I would have to say that I prefer Langstroth over flow hives and I think you will too. You will have to get inside and inspect the hives either way and the Langstroth hives and supers are cheap and interchangeable. I hope to hear from you in the future when you tell me about your hives and beekeeping journey.

The OEM frame prices can be found at honeyflow.com. If you are looking for used frames check ebay. I found a set of 7 on ebay for cheap. It looks like their prices are going up. I can tell you that this solution works. My homemade flow hive has been in service for two years and operated just the same as the 1,000.00 model. I do prefer the OEM frames but you can get the knock-offs on amazon and eBay for about 150.00 for 6. I just want to caution that I have not used these so I cannot vouch for their quality. @BugFarmerBees3 жыл бұрын
I guess it really depends on two things. 1. County ordinances where you live. ost areas allow up to 4 hives if you live in a neighborhood but it would be a good idea to check. Just look up bees on your county website. Secondly, define small :-) Bees don't require more than about a two foot by two foot area for their hive. If you are worried about bees flying around your small yard what you can do is build a little 4 foot by 6 foot by 6 foot high privacy fence around your hive which will give you room to work with your bees but it will make it so that their flight path is up and out. They will pretty much leave your yard the minute they take off. I hope this helps. Take care. Oh... and by the way. I like ART so I will be subbing your page. I paint acrylics and oils. Nice to meet you. :-)

When the flow frames are empty, as far as cleaning for next use, do you rinse them in warm water or let the bees clean them out or you just freeze & store them away till next time. I've heard some do, some don't. Hope this makes sense & doesn't sound redundant. Appreciate your time & info. Thank you.
@BugFarmerBees4 жыл бұрын
@@1ButterflyHunter I don't wash them out. If there is any uncapped honey in the frames at the end of the year and the bees have the frames re-sealed from the previous harvest I just set them out and let the colonies rob out the frames. Then I freeze, store, and wait for the next season. I hope this answers your question.

Where can I buy the pieces for build this?
@BugFarmerBees4 жыл бұрын
Yu can get the bee boxes, medium deeps, from any bee supply company. You can get the flowhive frames from honeyflow.com or look for used flowhive frames on eBay. You may also consider using the third party flow frames on Amazon for considerably less money. The feet, recap jar lids, and half gallon Ball jars can all be found on amazon.com. And that's it. Good luck on your build and thank you for watching. :-).

Hey Bug Farmer where did you get the metal strip from. I made a box with the all the cut now im at the end of it but need that metal strip? Did you get it from home depot, Lowe’s?? Any tips are helpful Thanks
@BugFarmerBees3 жыл бұрын
I actually yanked mine out of an old filing cabinet. I am sure home depot will have something that will work. It just need to be rigid enough to hold the bottom of the box in place. I looked at Home Depot and found two things that should work. www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-x-36-in-Aluminum-Flat-Bar-800217/204604762 or www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-in-x-36-in-Plain-Steel-Flat-Bar-with-1-4-in-Thick-801857/204225720 I hope this helps.

@@mfilipe77 You may try some of the knock off flow frames available on eBay and amazon. I have seen them for 140.00 on Amazon for 7 frames. I haven't use them so I can't speak to the quality but if you are building a honey empire then this may be work a try. Worst case scenario you lose 140.00, bets case you become a gazillionaire because you saved so much money in operating costs. www.amazon.com/TFCFL-Beehive-Beekeeping-Harvesting-Upgraded/dp/B078TDWB1D/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=flow+hive+frames&qid=1603818830&sr=8-3 :-)

@@BugFarmerBees I’ve done some research and I would not recommend, they are not food grade and some people tend to have some issues with them. Just saying, I rather use the company that created them over something that’s cheap without any warranties... 🤷🏽♂️

1k is a tad steep think I have about 300 into my 3 hives I always get red wasps building nests on the back of the bottom boards guess the dead larva that get carried out are free meals
@BugFarmerBees3 жыл бұрын
I agree 1k is steep. That is why I built my own on the cheap. That said, they are novelty hives and I wouldn't recommend an apiary full of them unless you live in a magical place with a year round nectar flow. I use a pop bottle with meat and sugar syrup in the bottom with the top cut off and inverted to catch the wasps. They are carnivores and can't resist the stinky meat. They fly in and can't get out. The bees seep to ignore the trap. Take care John and thanks for stopping in to have a look.

Thank you for your vids. When I went to their site I nearly sht myself when I saw the REDICULOUS prices on their hives, they have to be smoking some government grade sht. Lol as well as those who pay it, it'd take a year or 3 to break even on it.

It's not bad if you want it for the novelty of it, or maybe as a Garden hive. If you plan on running a bunch of hives I would suggest Langstroth. Much cheaper.

Why My message gone away ? I am waiting for your answers please
@BugFarmerBees3 жыл бұрын
I don't know why your comment isn't listed here. I can see it in the notification though. Anyway, one of my hives is an official Flow Hive 2 from Australia, and the other I built myself. The one I built myself is using real OEM flow frames from Australia that I purchased from a seller on eBay. As far as the legality of selling flow hives... I am not a lawyer but I suspect it is OK to sell them if you get an agreement with the folks at honeyflow.com and a good wholesale contract. That would really be a question for them though. Anyway, thanks for stopping in to have a look and I hope that I have satisfactorily answered your question. I hope to see you in future comments and maybe KZbin comments will work next time :-).

I don't use the shelves. I think they are superfluous and unusable. I empty my flowhive into half gallon jars. The shelf is far too close to the flow outlet to be usable with anything larher than a small glass jar. :-)
