Dear Laurence I am a new beekeeper of July 2021 and bought a Flow beehive before I bought the bees. I don't know if you have seen Fred Dunn who has had flow hives since 2015. He is the expert on them. We got 40 lbs of honey from our first try two weeks ago. You have to be patient and not extract until the frames you extract from are fully capped otherwise the honey backs up & out of the open cells usually at the very bottom of the frames. The reason for that is because the honey does not flow out of the tubes fast enough but if the cells are 100% capped that does not happen. If I had kept to the rules and waited till all the cells were capped we would not have had backing up of the honey and we would have got 49 lbs instead of 40. You can't beat having the hive backing onto a shed or greenhouse = no bees at the rear of the hive or in the honey! You can't beat having half gallon containers for each frame. As the lady said a bit of cling will stop any bees getting at the honey. Or a spare lid with a hole in it and a elbow.... As per Frederick Dunn PA -USA (you tube the way to bee) who does everything right.

I have been using Flow hives since the first Crowd Funded hives and have never caught a single bee in the honey and my honey is typically extracted mid day. I drape cheese cloth over the jar and spigot. I have never seen honey leak out before the frame is opened. Have been keeping bees for about 45 years, last ten or so with Flow. The bees in honey are not dead. Other bees will clean them off. The instruction booklet says the cap does not break when the frame is opened, bees must uncap the comb. I am guessing you didn't read the instruction booklet? Anyway, I suppose the video is a good example of how not to.

We have just got our 1st honey from our Flow hive number one, bought July 21. Absolutely brilliant is the Flow hive BUT I had to smile when you said a Flow hive owner must read the operating instructions. I think as well as that definitely see Fred Dunn =you tube=the way to bee. Flow hive owner and reviewer....since 2015 I made the mistake of not waiting till ALL the cells are capped and so observed three eggcups full of honey on the centre rear of the 'catch sheet' of the open mesh floor. We would have had 49 lbs of honey instead of 40lbs also by waiting till the time was right. That will teach me.

There are commercially available mason jar caps with holes in top to insert tubes. I’ve added a pvc elbow, to connect 2 flow tubes, and the honey is sealed away from the bees. The bees don’t enter the jar.

When you have one or two colonies you will notice less of the bees when harvesting. My first year was really good. When I ended up with 8 colonies. I had to change my strategy for harvesting because we had robber bees come by hundreds to rob the honey we were harvesting.

Trouble is, you're opening all of the cells. Think they meant put the key a quarter of the way in. Not sure why there is honey in the inner tube before you turned the key - all cells should be sealed. As for the bees, just fish them out with the key - the other bees will clean them up.

@@BlackMountainHoney I like the Flow and can't see how it can do any harm. If you want wax, that's a different matter, but you're causing less disruption and saving the bees resources by extracting this way, so how can that be a bad thing. Glad you're comparing the rip off with the original

Hi Laurence mate, thx I’ve enjoyed this series about the flow hives, I’d have to say these hives are perfect for the novice beek, when the honey is pouring into your jar that is a great moment, to be honest though mate the flow hive is not for me, too expensive and too easy i much prefer to have traditional hives and harvest my honey with my extractor, I will be harvesting this weekend as I’ve ran out of equipment and don’t want my colonies getting honey bound. Thx Laurence mate another great vlog.

My present from my son was 7 frame Cedar Flow Hive 2 over THOUSAND DOLLARS that went outside MAY 22 in MILD WEATHER of NEW JERSEY with few days of spring showers on & off. One of the reason paying for Cedar was that it would last longer. However, our brood box has split apart from one end to the other and 2 triangle part of the roof was splitting. ALL this within just few days, less than 2 weeks outside. This company blamed me for causing this by using Eco Wood treatment rather than using a natural wood for Cedar wood, literally calling me stupid. This company does NOT stand behind their product. Leaving me with a overpriced crap. At this point, rather than having a beautiful bee hive in my yard with my beautiful flowers & fruit trees (I planted them for my beautiful honey bees) I have this ugly brood box with shiny water proof caulking from one end to the other side. Also, the brood box has honey and nothing , there are flowers every day from early spring until the late fall here. My house is on the lake with water lilies, golden rods everywhere, flowers in my yard, flowers in my veg garden and flowering frees everywhere. Also, Fred Dunn stated that the Eco Wood does NOT dry Cedar. So at this point, I ended up with a overpriced broken Cedar Flow Hive.

I have had a flow hive for the past 4 years. I don’t extract the honey direct into the jars for the obvious reasons. I find it easier for the honey to go into a funnel and then into a container, that way I can fish out the odd bee before it goes through the funnel. The negative I do have is that every time I have extracted honey I have seen honey leaking out of the bottom of my hive. If anyone know what I am doing wrong I would be pleased to hear. My wife likes the flow hive as she doesn’t have to put up with the mess of uncapping and spinning super frames. Took 23lb off of 4 frames last week, I suspect there was more on those frames but I didn’t have the time to sit and watch the honey dribble out. Thanks for the flow hive series.

I had about three eggcups full of honey right at the rear cells only and I feel confident it was my fault for not confirming all the cells were capped. Fred Dunn you tube the way to bee is the expert and well worth watching. He says he contacted the manufacturer of his Flow hive and they advised he would not have any leaks the second time he did an extraction. He says he did not have honey leaking into the brood second time but the first time all his bees evacuated the hive....... All the cells may well have been capped the second time. I noticed the cells in the centre of the 7 frames at the rear were the only ones that backed up. Because I'm an old engineer I noted that can happen if too much oil is poured into a funnel and backs up quicker than the outflow. The narrower the tube the more resistance of flow. I bought two 45 deg clear 1" elbows that will be tight against the frames next time so the honey will not be hindered by 4" of nigh on level pipe. Best wishes

@@BlackMountainHoney I firmly believe it is 'backing up'. It seems to be honey backing up out of cells that are not capped. Centre rear at bottom are as per Frederick Dunn ( you tube the way to bee ) Flow hiver since 2015 = the ones capped last. The open mesh floor catch tray shows the 'evidence'. Another bit of 'evidence' proves that any beekeeper who gets less than a full 4 pints of honey from each frame has done his extraction too soon. Patience is a virtue = especially when it comes to Flow hives.

lol i didn't have that kind of problem with the bees, but then i've only got a couple of flow hives atm, extracted from 6 out of 7 frames on a super today, and they filled 45 12oz jars. that was my first harvest from a flow hive, i'm very happy, agree about the gabled roof though, it's nice aesthetically but not so practical for feeding. still hopefully nxt year i'll have five flow hives up and running.

The honey production over a season is much higher for the flowhives because all of the wax is still there. Wax takes a huge amount of energy for the bees to make, so not having to make it every time we harvest a super saves them a ton of time.

Hey Laurence, thanks so much for this video. I look forward to all of them , especially the Flowhives. I would suggest a bit of cling film covering the tube and over the jar opening so its basically sealed up. Easy, cheap, job done. 😁 I also let the honey in the tube at the bottom of the frame, drain out of the little gap at the bottom of the tube. The bees tend to seal it up with propolis, so it just needs unsealing and the bees clean it up. I have been told it will ferment if left in the tube, and will then taint the honey that comes out behind. I do have a bit of trouble with the frames leaking honey out the sides and going down into the brood box. That would be my negative on them. Otherwise I LOVE mine. Cheers

If we had been more patient we would have got 49 lbs. This was due to not waiting till all the cells are capped. People with flow hives think this is leaking but I firmly believe it is honey backing up and out of any open cells at the very bottom row centre back which are the last to be capped.

I'm a new beekeeper. My first hive was a Flow hive. It's easy to use if you follow the instructions. It's WAY easier to extract honey from my Flow hive, than my 3 other Langstroths, as I have no extracting equipment. I just crush and strain or cut out the honeycomb from them. Whatever you do that is new, you need to learn properly.

Best design for years. Looking at honey extraction through the eyes of an engineer it is a very cleaver idea. The only drawback for me was the cost so I looked on A and was pleasantly surprised so I've now got two...... and yes if the bees are treated with care and the full Flow hive instructions are kept to, then and only then the Flow hive is fantastic. I could have made a stainless centrifugal extractor that would have cost a lot so I thought it was a good idea to try the new fangled Flow hive and I'm glad I did.

You misunderstood the advice about putting the bar key in. You don't put it all the way in and turn it 1/4. You put it 1/4 of the way in and turn it all the way... then you put it half way in and turn it , then 3/4s and turn it, then put it all the way in and turn it. And yeah, all you need is a small piece of plastic wrap to save those bees... that was just ridiculous doing it like that.

Am not at all sold on these flow hives, this video helps confirm my suspicions of the kind of problems you can have with them. I prefer the traditional way of removing frames of capped honey in one go for processing as I like to cause as little stress as possible to my colonies and zero drowned bees. By harvest they're used to you being in the hive so they won't suspect they're about to be robbed of their honey frames. In my experience taking honey multiple times from the same hive is a recipe for making pissy, defensive bees-they aren't stupid.

As a new flow hive user I have to say I am speechless with this video! First I am not sure if your bashing flow hive or praising it? I don't think you looked at the video's they offer on how to use the flow hive. First off I am not sure what you were talking about with the shelf, the brackets go on the bood box and are easly ajusted for your jar size! Also those bee's looked way too stirred up for a hive not even open yet. That seems scary to a new hive person if they saw that and didn't know. On that key, after you said about how far you were told to put it in and turn, you rammed it all the way in and tried to turn it. NOT THE WAY TO DO IT! It looked also that you have a another super on top maybe saving for some honey cone, if you had of waited before adding that the flows in the super would have been super filled and capped ready. I was also very sad to see those bee's in the honey and you filled that jar right to the top and put the lid on it with your bee's in there. You could have easly stopped all of that from happening. Those little guys worked so hard to make that honey for you and you should have respected them better, shame on you! Cover the tube and jar top with a cloth or netting and they won't get in the jar! What was the smoker for? As you didn't open the brood and don't have to smoke when getting the honey from the flow. This video is a good show on everything not to do with the flow hive or any hive for that matter. You seem like you do a lot of hives but not sure how you have not had those bee's come after you the way you handle them. I'm not being rude to you, but as a new bee keeper I would have been scared to death if I saw your video before I started! Also to some of the commits about the cost of a flow! Why not also point out that this is a research delvelopment project and a lot of money when you buy goes to bee conservation and teaching new bee keepers. From the way they handle, talk and care for the bee's, they treat them as any other pet and care deeply about not smashing or killing them in the process of getting the honey! Thank you for hearing me out there!

Hi Thanks for your comment. Your points pretty much nail why I did this video. To give an alternative and unbiased view of what the bees/situation can be like when you take it out of a marketing situation. I am not paid by Flow and bought my own equipment - so deserve my opinion. I've always maintained. I LOVE the Flow Hive. Its cool and there is nothing quite like it. BUT, its not at easy as the marketing videos make out. Not all bees are super calm. Most bees will come and get interested in the honey so there needs to be a way of blocking the bees from it. I knew this in advance of the video and I assume Flow did as well. But i wanted to show what happens when it doesnt work. When the honey is ripe for flowing, its generally robbing season in the UK. One drop of honey and it stirs them up like this. Just a fact of the UK timing. Not mentioned anywhere in marketing videos. With regards to full turns vs quarter turns, its all about preference. Quarter turns will do it but it takes AGES. Works fine on a full turn. Maybe not quite as efficient as you lose a bit of honey in the hive, but it works just fine. All about preference. Smoker always on hand when I am doing any inspections. My job isn't to sell Flow Hives to new beekeepers, rather give them an honest appraisal of the system and how it works. Its faults, its flaws, what I dont like - and also what I do like. And there is no mistake. I love the Flow Hive and recommend it all the time. I am just not paid by Flow to say that so I dont have to sugar coat the message ;) Regards to cost. I guarantee. Anybody and EVERYBODY would prefer if they did away with bee conservation (a problem that isnt actually a problem anywhere) and teaching (something I do for FREE) and took 50% off the cost of the hive. Its a marketing ploy unfortunately to enable to sell them at extortionate prices. You can buy a fake flow hive for £100. That means the £700 difference on the RRP is PROFIT. Nice margins. Again you are mistaking a product promotion video for an honest appraisal of a product. Of course they arent going to show you bees getting caught in the jars. Why would they? I didnt want mine to get stuck - but I knew if I followed the staged marketing videos advice, they would get stuck in the jar. Look at the next video in the playlist where I devised a system to ensure bees didnt get stuck. I did that because I care about the bees and have shown that to everyone to help protect their bees as well. FLOW have a multi million dollar marketing team who are brilliant at what they do. They also have TONNES of dead loyal fans who will protect them under all circumstances. All I am offering is an alternative view to the product from a non paid perspective. Would I buy another Flow Hive? - Yes. Do I recommend Flow Hives to people? - Yes I am big fan of the Flow Hive, the product, the marketing team, the owners etc.. All brilliant in what they do. But, Ill continue to use the Flow Hive in the UK and give my honest, unfiltered views and reflections :)

It just seems like you did everything wrong. Almost like you didn't do any research or read instructions. First of all, why do you have so many bees flying around the backside of your hives where you are trying to harvest with the Flow super? And why didn't you just use some wax paper or plastic wrap to cover the flow tube and top of jar? then no bees could get into the jar. The negative points that you point out were actually caused by your erroneous use of the Flow Hive. I suggest you start over and get things setup properly.
