How rude! Lol. Our 1st summer at our house we bought (last year) my tomatoes were root bound by the time we got the ground prepped & I got them planted so they stayed very small & didnt produce a lot. Even though he KNOWS from years past that I can grow a 10 foot tall tomato!, he said "What are you doing wrong with these tomatoes?" "Why are they so small?" I could've smacked him! 😆 Well now I have 20-something plants growing big h beautiful & producing a ton (like usually) & I'm like "What NOW?"

Thanks to Mike "Dickson" for direction to your channel. I live in Harlem (Manhattan -- NYC)and most of the flowers and bushes in the landscape around my apartment building were placed on my behalf by a friendly maintenance man. On many of my previous trips via Amtrak, the flowers, rootings, etc., were taken from my mother's yard and just randomly driving down backroads in South Carolina. A couple of years ago, management for my apartment hired a professional landscape company to plant trees, etc., and fortunately they did not uproot any of my plantings (by the way, they and management never knew that I was the one who had maintenance do the plantings. I've never been the type for patting on the back). Most of the landscaper's planting have not survived. My Rose of Sharons/Hibiscuses, Hydrangeas, Butterfly bushes are still flourishing. Matter of fact, the "mother" of the Rose of Sharon has spread its seeds all around the neighborhood. I have no botany knowledge and did not know about this until the maintenance guy told me. The novel " A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" should also have included Harlem. LOL.

As I mentioned in a previous comment dahlia's are my favorite flower so I will enjoy learning from you. If you dig up some of your tubers I would love to see a video on how you store them? Do you ever save the seeds? I know that they are not true to the parent but wonder if you have ever had any good ones come from seeds? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Hi thanks so much for your information just finding your channel last week. I’m a new flower farmer 1st year in NC have started my channel but really haven’t been consistent. I love the dahlias started mine from seed this year and now I am looking for tubers. What was the foliage that you were cutting ? I am always foraging but not sure if I have seen that one here in NC. I didn’t know fish emulsion deters deers. Do you make your own? Also, would love to learn more about cutting, deadheading, getting straight stems. Also, when storing, you dip in cinnamon and then do you wrap in newspaper, plastic?
@WindyBrookRidgeHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Cool! I’m excited to making a video on this. Fish emulsion is great for deer. Maybe I can go over in a very future video! Storing always becomes a big scare for people. I dip the stems in cinnamon and then sprinkle lightly over the roots cinnamon. I place and store them in black crates that have good airflow. I store them around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. In this case for me I put them under my house in the crawl space. I just cover the tops of the baskets. The main thing is keep them dry and not frozen !

You said something about using cinnamon on your tubers for storage, can you elaborate?
@WindyBrookRidgeHomestead3 жыл бұрын
Like sulphur, cinnamon is a natural fungicide that helps most plants root, while inhibiting the spores that cause rot in stems. Dip prepared plant stems in cinnamon. It's an effective way to to store for the winter. A teaspoon to one gallon is fine. Then, lightly sprinkle them when finished.
