incoming rant:
this is an attempt to put all my complex feelings about merlin and arthur’s relationship in one video. there’s a very visible contrast to my other merthur edit. this one’s in merlin’s pov and it highlights the negatives more than the positives. i think it makes sense arthur would have a better concept of the relationship than merlin since merlin KNEW him like ACTUALLY knew him. he was always there for him and helped him with everything he could. he sacrificed so much just for his sake. but that it’s not a good thing if you really think about it.
merlin was told by so many people, directly or indirectly, that he existed for arthur and for arthur only. he had so much fight and light inside himself in season 1 but then he was put into a position where he had to hide himself and protect the son of someone who wanted him and his kind dead. and he did it 1. because he was manipulated by everyone into thinking it was his number one priority and 2. because in the process he actually started loving arthur. that makes it even sadder because arthur didn’t do what everyone told merlin he was supposed to do. magic was still illegal, his people were still being killed and even worse yet, merlin did some of the killing himself. he lost who he was. he lost sight of what was really important.
about the technicalities of the edit: omg i had everything ready to post (description, subtitles, thumbnail) and then i checked my video in my phone and realized the coloring was all wrong. turns out i had to calibrate my laptop’s screen which i did but i’m still not sure i can trust it 100%. and i'm not happy with the greyscale so might have to recalibrate it again ugh.

you're right and he was told so to have lost sight of who he was by Gillie and Mordred (you included that one yourself). it was a very one-sided 'love' too. sure, Arthur loved him back to a point. from Arthur's p.o.v. he was more than generous to Merlin but if we are honest, Arthur just saw him as his sidekick and Merlin couldn't be more than a [trusted] servant who is worth saving. Arthur repeatedly risked his own life saving Merlin and that is noteworthy and shows his love but at the same time he would never see him as equal. to his credit he finally came around after a few days digesting Merlin's powers as warlock to forgive him the lies and grant absolution for his deeds. the true tragedy of Merlin is not the imbalance of power and social station between the pair or the different levels of loving the other person but Merlin's failure to make Arthur do what he was supposed to do: uniting Albion, lifting the ban on magic and free all those unjustly persecuted for it. maybe aiming for a united Albion was a pipe dream all along but Merlin had a unique chance to right the wrongs for magic users in s05e05 'The Disir' were Arthur asked him point blank whether to lift the ban on magic or not. Merlin's logic was ill-advised or downright stupid. he made many mistakes on the magic front but this one was his biggest blunder.

@@granville7 You're totally right. I would just say that in the episode "The Disir", when Merlin make the choice to not lift the ban on magic, I think that is just because Merlin became so attached to Arthur, that he made the choice of saving Arthur instead of take the opportunity to make Arthur accept magic in his kingdom. This is not a stupid choice, this is a choice directed by his feelings. It shows how strong his attachment for Arthur has become, to left aside his life's goal in order to save him. At least that's how I interpreted it. ^^

@@defelozedd94 In 'The Disir' Arthur's life wasn't threatened. It looked like Mordred's life was in danger but it was all a ploy by the Disir or the Triple Goddess (not sure). Merlin demonstrated in another ep that he can take on the Triple Goddess and defy her will. So what is his problem here? Take his own logic when he explains it to Arthur and find the flaw.

@@granville7 Well, Arthur's life has always been threatened as long as Mordred was alive. Merlin's logic was that if Mordred died, Arthur was no longer threatened with death. So he chooses to not accept magic in Camelot in order to let Mordred die. But in the end, as you said, it was just a ploy by the Disir: if Arthur would have accepted magic in his kingdom, the Disir (or Triple Goddess, I'm not sure either ^^) would have stopped the prophecy and let Arthur live. Instead, they let Mordred live to punish Arthur with the prophecy.

@@defelozedd94 not sure if I can follow you. yes, Merlin feared Mordred would eventually cause Arthur's death and letting him die here might solve that. But this isn't really how Merlin functions, it it? That would make his character mean. He doesn't do anything to Mordred (despite the dragon telling him to kill the boy years ago) since Merlin isn't a monster who kills preemptively. He needs a valid reason and Mordred hasn't given him one yet. The Disir demand total obedience from Arthur in order to save Mordred. That ofc is utterly unacceptable and Merlin is right to advise Arthur that way. However, the question whether to allow magic back or not isn't a simple matter of black&white. Merlin didn't even attempt to argue for the benefits of magic like healing etc. Magic is like a weapon, a sword. The wielder determines whether it is applied for good or evil. The blacksmith who made the sword is not responsible for the damage/death the sword caused. Allowing magic back doesn't also mean Arthur would allow back the sinister side of magc as well. Merlin doesn't make Arthur see this option at all. That is where he fails. Magic harming Camelot could still be outlawed but magic benefitting Camelot would be welcomed. Why didn't Merlin sell this to Arthur?

This vid is so perfect and so freaking sad oh my. Most vids/fics tend to overlook this darker part of their dynamic: how Arthur is in a position of power over Merlin, how Merlin has to constantly hide his true self, how cruel Arthur can get (knowingly or unknowingly), how unequal their bond is... It's not all there is to it (we wouldn't be here if it was the case!) but you captured this part of their relationship extremely well. Thank you so much! All the best x

I love it. Like in every relationship, there are flaws in Merlin & Arthur dynamics, Arthur can be really self absorbed and blind to Merlin's suffering, and Merlin doesn't tell him much about what he's going through, either. You captured it perfectly. Thank you for this extraordinary piece of art.

Hi, it’s the me who just finished the 5th season… I was so surprised when Merlin convinced Arthur that magic had no place in Camelot. It made me realize that he gave up his beliefs and the benefits of magical people to save Arthur and only Arthur. He denied his very nature for Arthur. If that’s not toxic, I don’t know what is.

This just shows all the pain the Canon Merthur gave to us all, especially Merlin. They're just full of obstacles and Merlin sacrificed everything for him, man! This is so good. I'm in love!

Oh gods, sweet motherfcking jesus, this video and that description is everything that I see as problematic in their relationship. Don't get me wrong I love merthur but... Their relationship was so unhealthy in some aspects and everything that was put on Merlin just made him into someone that made me more and more angry with at him each season. And all of this, all of his souls sold for the future and it was all just a lie, a lie told to him by a dragon that wanted revenge so who knows if his advice was even truthful and not to hurt Merlin and Arthur and Albion as a whole. I hurt-loved this, thank you so much for creating this video!

thank you!! i think what's worse is that it wasn't just the dragon who told him all that. the druids and many other people talked about merlin and arthur's destiny and what they were supposed to accomplish and yet... the only thing that came true was arthur's death.

@@flowerbookmark Yeah, I think we were meant to read in Guen becoming the sole ruler that the future of Albion is changed for the better but if Guen was supposed to be the one that will change the world then why wasn't she part of the supposed prophecy? And gods Merlin waiting for thousands of years and this is supposed to be what, romantic? It's just depressing, not being able to live your life because your whole existence is serving your King that didn't even really ever knew you and what you sacrificed for him wholly.

@@RedWolfhound yeah i think it mostly can be summarised in it being bad writing gjdjfj. also yes a lot of people tend to glorify many aspects of merthur that shouldn't be glorified or looked at in a romantic way. i personally have a love/hate relationship with their dynamic. unfortunately i feel like the negative outweighs the positive and it makes me sad. i used to really be into them as a couple but in canon they're a mess.

@@flowerbookmark Yeah eh, the saddest thing is people interpretating Merlin's absolutely devotion to Arthur as something admirable. Like, healthy relationships (romantic, platonic or familial) aren't based on sacrificing everything for that one person. But yeah, a lot of stuff in the show sounds like bad writing and lack of understanding of psychology because when you have to interpret those things in the in world frame then there is soo many red flags for unhealthy relationships, charakters' lack of morals when safety of someone important to them comes into question (but yeah Morgana is somehow the only evil one eh) and for the whole prophecy not being actually real. It's all just ugh.

@@RedWolfhound exactly, love isn't about that. sometimes i think about that one scene where merlin tells arthur he was born to serve him and oh boy. that's not romantic or admirable, it makes me angry. if one person has to sacrifice everything he stands for and everything he is then that isn't love. i wish merthur in canon was better but it isn't. if the writers would have spent more time developing the characters and their relationships instead of making dumb and cheap jokes where arthur hits and mistreats merlin then everything would be better lol.

I read the comments (channel owner and his/her replies) and I think they're not very fair to Arthur because ı am literally sure Merlin wasn't just a servant for Arthur. He was a friend that he could sacrifice his life even first season it was like this. Sorry guys but ı need a hope to survive ı need to believe this friendship. But it doesn't mean ı don't think same as you. You have a point.

it's okay lol i made this video when i was in my very critical of arthur phase i've changed my mind a little ever since. i still think i made several points and i still think it's sad that sometimes their relationship would feel so one sided. i do think arthur cared about merlin but he was just so hard on him sometimes and very frustrating. i think arthur was hard to root for at times but i still like him regardless. and i still wish they could have changed some things about their relationship or that the show would have given them more time to get to know each other for real before killing arthur off and ending the series. it's just so sad but i guess that's the point? i'm not sure anymore

My comment was dramatic ı know that, sorry. It was because of this (even me and my bestie's profiles are complete each other as Arthur and Merlin) that I wish we could watch a good friendship in which Arthur knows the Truth, sees Merlin's courage, and is thankful to him.
