When I was around 9 years old, my dad was out in a field mowing a field of cover crop, and accidentally went over a fawn and nicked it's ear. He rushed to grab her and take her to the house to give her first aid [stitched her back up]. The mother didn't come back, so he had to bring her back to the house and we bottle fed her until she could eat food. She slept on our enclosed porch for a couple months. He named her PEGGY! When he put her outside she would wander off, then keep coming back to our back open porch and wait there for him to bring her food. If she wan't there on time, he yelled PEGGY, and she came running. This went on for a couple of years. He had to go out and cut greens for her to eat, and even kept a greenhouse with fresh greens growing to keep her fed in the winter. Then 1 day the game warden came [someone turned him in], and they found nothing, since she was off wandering. She always was free to go off and do her thing. She was never locked up. BUT when deer hunting season was open,, he ditched her in a far back shed that wasn't even used anymore for anything other than grain storage. The game warden kept coming back and coming back, cause a twisted neighbor kept calling them. They probably wanted to kill her. BUT because she was on the domesticated side, he had contacted a zoo, and asked if she could go there to live out her days in peace without being killed. So she went to a great home. She had a couple of babies, then she died in 1975 of old age. He was always so sad that she couldn't just stay on the farm in the barn with the animals. He no longer has Animals, and only does farm to table growing. The entire 380 acres is all now, farm to table fruits, nuts, vegetables and botanics. NO ANIMALS at all. Just 100% all organics.

I finally found out what is "stock" in polish :) The polish name of this flower is "lewkonia". When you pronounce name of this flower, you rather say "lewkonija" which, basically means lionhorseandme :D Just a fun fact :)

I was out in the woods at work (I work in cultural resource management on a large military installation) and came across one the mom had stashed in a nice little grass bed next to a tree. I had a peony I bought from a peony farmer years ago. I never planted it. Every winter I'd bring the pot into my garage to try to keep it alive one more season until I knew where I wanted to plant it. (The farmer said it was his favorite, Moonstone.) A couple years ago, I FINALLY chose the spot. It looked so pathetic. Just one straggly stem. This year, it's fully leafed out and looks super healthy. No flowers, but maybe next year.

The mock orange is the perfect finishing touch on your lovely spring bouquets. Lily is a generous lady!! I let my peonies keep their leaves in spring (great in fall bouquets), but I use forsythia greens (after bloom), immature green-purple seed pods of honesty (money plant), and immature blooms of snowball viburnum as greens this time of year.
@Edu_Kate2 жыл бұрын
Oh, that mock orange! I have a small hedge of the dwarf variety under my bay window and I noticed tonight it's covered in blooms. In about 15 years, I don't believe I've ever seen that many blooms. Last year, I copiced the hedge to about 6 inches tall. Now that I learned I was pruning it too late (like Lilacs, prune immediately after it blooms) I hope to have blooms regularly in future seasons. I thought there's a fragrance to these blooms. It used to smell heavenly, but I didn't detect anything. I don't know how one can choose a bouquet. They're all so lovely. This is a case when the last people to pick up have the advantage. Makes choosing easier when fewer choices.

The mock orange was just gorgeous in the bouquets. Unfortunately, deer pressure here is too high and they kill every one I plant. I started my ranunculus way too late and they are just about as small as when I moved them outside over a month ago. It's still cool here, but doubt I will get any flowers this year, but I will try again. Deer also cropped about 1/3 of them, so that didn't help, lol. As for the fawn, so sweet. The does will often leave them hidden all day long so any predators dont find them and the does only return to them a couple times a day to feed. I guess that works but I think it's a bit sad to see the babies alone and I think it's why people assume they have been abandoned , but they haven't. So glad you included the message about if you care , leave it alone. By the way, it's pic-o-tee. Bouquets were all glorious.

I tried them for the first time this season. Soaked---sprouted in trays------planted in field in burned holes fabric-----then it got hot here, and pretty sure they're toast. Cool when I planted them.... the weather here has become so unpredictable. Heat wave and 90's for over a week..and no rain in sight. So glad you love the hoophouse. Sorta thought you would. I don't know if I should rip them out or not. There's still a little green on alot of them...but they don't look good. Just a hundred or so for my market----but still wanted to try them. Wholesale?!!!! WoW!!!
