Can you Transplant Oriental Poppies? Watch me do it!

We are told that Oriental Poppies can't be transplanted successfully and I say "Phooey!"
There are many plants that we've been told you cannot transplant and I have went ahead and done it. Not because I am a rebel gardener but because I had to move them for one reason or another and rather than not even try I did my best to transplant them.
And you know what? They lived. Sure, they went into shock and lost their leaves but within weeks they were sprouting new growth and are growing in their new spot in the garden beds just fine!
The moral of the story is don't be afraid to try something even if others say it is impossible.
So this video is how I transplanted a beautiful Orential Poppy so I could save it from the gophers.

*I garden in zone 8 but I face the challenge of being surrounded by evergreens (I live in the mountains) that cast a lot of shade. Plus we get very cool nights even in summer. Many lower zones will actually get blooms long before I do.

I was so thrilled to see it worked too. I am starting many more again this year from seed with my winter sowing. A friend gave me loads of seeds from her poppies so it should be interesting to see the results.

I love my Oriental poppies! Here in Montana I have seen the deer tear them out or chomp on them. Also rabbits like to nibble on most things! Sure glad I don’t have gophers too! Interesting to see a successful transplant of your poppies. Ruben is cute!!

@@maryrasnick7642 Yes, though they are deer resistant it does not prevent them from trying them. I have several other plants that are deer resistant too and the rascals tear them out but after nibbling a bit they toss them aside. It is as if they are mad because they are not to their liking. Either way, the damage is done! When deer are hungry nothing is sacred! Rabbits too.

I have some that are coming back. I need to dig them up and pot them so the gophers don't eat them too!

Get dog fur it helps with gophers. After I vacuum, I take the fur and spread it in my flower beds. I'm also using blood meal. I sprinkle it all over my gardens, and so far, knock on wood. The gophers have left my flower beds alone. You can try cat fur, too. Blood meal is also good for your plants. I also heard shaved soap like irsh springs can keep them away.

Great idea, I will try the cat fur. I have a new little battery vac that I use everyday to keep up with the cat hair and it is so easy to empty. I just need to walk it out to the garden. I had hoped my kitties would be gopher hunters and I have watched them stalking the gopher mounds and tunnels but I haven't been brought any. So time to try the cat hair!

I thought about doing that with the dog fur! My grandmas nieghbor puts cat poop in mole holes around his yard.. he swears it helps lol Thanks for the tips!

A friend claimed a simple solution for gophers, he lived next to an open field, was chewing gum. He recommended a brand called "juicy Fruit", Simply drop a piece down each gopher hole. He said it worked because gophers could not digest gum. He claimed not only did this work but the gophers left and rarely returned. Never tried it myself, but its a cheap hack.

I'm so sorry to hear about your gophers... the tone of your voice is so relatable... absolute disappointment. I have the same issues with Rabbits. Try granular chicken manure, seems to keep them at bay, not completely, but somewhat

Interesting! I had heard the gophers don't like some things that are heavily scented. I have tried the castor oil spray but I don't think I keep up with it well enough. Plus I am not sure what it does to the biosphere in the soil. I do mulch with my chicken pen debris, you would think that would help keep them away.
