Charlie Gordon is a thirty-two year old retarded man. He works at Donner's Bakery and attends reading classes at the Beekman College Center for Retarded Adults. Recognizing Charlie as a hard-working and friendly young man, doctors at Beekman College choose him for an experimental brain operation that raises his IQ of 68 to that of a genius. Charlie's intellectual progress is astounding; he learns obscure languages and performs complex mathematical equations. This intelligence comes with a price, however. Charlie's stimulated memory allows him to recall painful abuse from family and friends. He becomes bitter, arrogant, and lonely, and his 'emotional retardation' interferes with his love for Alice Kinnian. Tragically, Charlie discovers a flaw in the experiment and he realizes that his mental regression is inevitable. With little time remaining, Charlie visits his mother and spends time with Alice. At the end, Charlie commits himself to the dismal Warren State Home and Training School.

I remember reading the original book in high school, and got a copy as a birthday present. A personal favourite of mine, because I sympathize Charlie Gordon, because how hard life can be with a disability. I have the thought, that I would sell my soul to be rid of my autism.

Andy Slaughter. It's without a doubt that you have had to live life with challenge, with exploration, with having to play a video game where you cannot alter the degree of understanding. I've seen the same people with autism overcome things I would be too afraid or impatient to tackle. Andy Slaughter. You are aware of your impediment, but I encourage you to realize that what you have is no impediment. It is insight! It is an understanding to a perspective alien and far-removed from what us "normal" folk live by day to day. Andy Slaughter. You speak of paying a price to remove yourself of this talent. I say you do not realize what gift you have! I say you have surely endured a tough childhood, but can surely flourish in this world where people understand and can show compassion. Andy Slaughter. There are few people like yourself in the world. I ask only that you take another hard look and realize what gifts you have for this world and our nation. Andy Slaughter. Carry on, and know that you have my blessing!

Buddy, I'm 28 years old, work a job that pays little despite a college degree, and I'm also a virgin. Ain't that a bitch? Virginity is nothing to worry about. Trust me, I hit that mental "wall" when it came to sex and it's the last thing on my mind. I too know isolation, loneliness, and rejec *cringe* rejection, man tell me about it because you're preaching to a choir that doesn't like to sing. My counselor keeps trying to tell me I have PTSD, and I got pissed because that shit belongs to the military. I'm not military. You're coherent enough to spell properly and make good sentences in your comment. I say your "curse" can be overcome. I believe in you, and I will pray for you. However, prayer can only do so much. It's still all up to you. I know you'll do the right thing.

Andy Slaughter I have Aspergers Syndrome and epilepsy and it has been a huge burden my entire life. Im 27 and I too am on disability. It fucking sucks. This world is made for neurotypical people who can drive. Don’t listen to the other guy, he doesn’t know what he is talking about. Neurotypical people don’t understand.

Jimmy and Andy... i am very sorry the two of you, and so many others have suffered with disabilities. i wish with all of my heart that cures were available. i am sobbing uncontrollably while trying to write this. i'm sure the other person is only trying to help you feel happy with what you have. Don't be too hard on the guy. i feel the system is rigged. against everyone. nobody seems to try to educate the bullying behavior out of these so called normal people. it's almost encouraged to act like charlie's so called friends, the ones he had at the bakery. honestly, i wish this book had a better ending. its fiction after all. why couldn't charlie have landed somewhere in the middle at the end of the book? i wish he ended up with an I.Q. of around 120 maybe 130. instead of soaring above 200 at the peak of his development then falling back to his original levels of somewhere between 60 and 70. know it's only a story. BUT, speculative fiction seems to always have a warning message that says "Don't try it... you'll end up breaking something". it's just not fair... not even in a book.

I like the 1970s version better... but the best is to read the actual "progress notes" as they are portrayed in the book. I read it when I was a little kid and it has stuck with me my entire life... such a nuanced approach to the concept of intelligence: intellectual vs. emotional. In real life of course we need to mesh those two together and even then many of us (myself included) tend to mess it up. To me, this is the ultimate psychological story... there is such a clear arc, matching the beginning perfectly to the end, with the middle being his peak of genius. And yet, he was more unhappy there than anywhere else. What a great story. I hope another movie version comes out that truly honors those progress reports from Charly.

After Keyes had such success with the original short story, ( won the prestigious Hugo Award, ) he expanded it into a novel. Cliff Robertson won an Oscar for his portrayal of Charlie in 1968. In my opinion, the short story is the definitive work. Told in first person narrative form, the reader can see the rise and fall of Charlie's intelligence through spelling and grammatical errors. There is no sadder last line in literature. " Please if you get a chanse put some flowrs on Algernons grave in the bak yard..." Heart-rending.

I haven't seen this in years, thank you for posting! And it brings to light the paradox of neuropsychological enhancement through psychotropics and invasive medical procedures. Except for possibly modifying self depricating behaviours, the temptation to elicit "smart drugs" to have an advantage or competitive edge, rarely has the desired outcome longer term. Again, thank you for posting.

It's so interesting to see the different comments on this. To clear up some questions, in the abridged version for middle schools the text is very different than the full novel, changing it from a bakery to a factory, changing his age from 32 to 37, removing characters and entire plot lines.
@markpettigrew3482
@markpettigrew3482 10 жыл бұрын
There is a SparkNotes page regarding this movie which sums up another aspect of the story which is very likely minimized in the abridged middle school version: "Charlie picks up the habit of wandering through the streets of New York at night. One night, he meets a strange and sad woman in Central Park who tells him about her problems and then offers to have sex with him. Charlie almost goes home with the woman, until she reveals that she is pregnant." Retarded people who have never had sex don't usually have the expectation that they will ever experience that kind of pleasure. Unfortunately, my IQ was tested when I was in grade school, and it was 140, not 70 or less. And I am tired, at the age of 57, of still being a virgin. Maybe I should go to New York, in the hopes of meeting a "strange and sad woman".

I got to read this twice in school; in Junior High and High School. I only saw this version back in Junior High since my teacher had a copy recorded on a VHS tape but in High School we watched the 1966 version known as Charly, which omitted the stuff that happened in his childhood such as his family and the kids at school that ended up getting him beat up by some older kids who trick him into writing a nasty letter to girl he liked.

Most of us are harmless, wishing to cause no harm to others. And likewise there are those that bully the weak, and harass the timid. These lost souls are as wolves. Thankfully there are sheep dogs amongst us too. People who protect those of the minority. Brave and honorable people who defend those who society might scorn. It’s OK to be gentle as a lamb. It’s OK to be a sheep dog. And if you choose to be a wolf, causing harm to those less strong than yourself; keep in mind you’re giving the sheep dogs something to look forward to.
