As a Shanghainese speaker, the book is fantastic as well. I think the film is a perfect example of how to adopt a book to screen. Basically most of the movie scenes are what the book glossed over, "then everyone eat, drink and partied.", and yet it was 100% faithful to the book. One of Hou's best movie ever.

Don't know if you've found a copy yet, but there are DVDs for sale very affordably on eBay, or there's this: rarefilmm.com/2018/03/hai-shang-hua-1998/ One of my all-time favorite films.
