With Spectre coming to Blu Ray soon, experience the fantastic opening shot that tracks Bond through The Day of the Dead, into a hotel, up an elevator, into a room, onto the roof of said hotel, and to a vantage point for a good old fashioned shootout. Classic Bond, probably the best moment in the film, and quite possibly the single greatest shot in the series. Great work from Sam Mendes, Hoyte Van Hoytema and smart mask cuts by Editor Lee Smith.

+Dufffaaa93 In all fairness, I've been to Mexico city. A lot of yellowish smog and stuff, but beige brickwork too. As London being grey, I can vouch for that overall color as well. Always has been. Just like for New York I'd say beige, and for Tokyo silver/white, Rome a bright grey/brown color, Rio a rusty red/brown[favelas] and bright beige color. And for Beijing, smog color, and not much else visible. [I think my lifespan lost about 3 years while I was there.] I travel a lot, and its safe to say I've definitely seen some color differences in places.

@Ja Herrera It's not a grenade launcher at all, it's a glock pistol with a carbine kit conversion, he just fired to the explosive that the bad guys were going to use to blow up the stadium, he even shot some bullets to them before the explosion. When I first saw this at the theater I didn't understand, but I knew that the gun was just a pistol so I quickly understood what happened, it's actually a momentum thing, really cinematographic (it's made on purpose to create that reaction on the public)

There are a mistake. In the elevator, the viewer feels like there are three person I mean de camera man. Because they wait till de camera goes inside to activate it. Then when it arrives they wait till the camera man goes out to start walking. After that they dont close the door of the room as a normal movement because they wait till the cameraman gets in. It feels so intrusive.

+Movie Maker Personally for me, I think it is a very good Bond film but not great. I agree that the script is weak, Lea Seyoux's character is very underwritten and that the nostalgia can get in the way at times. However thanks to the crisp cinematography, gorgeous locations, performances, entertaining action, humor and set pieces it does hold out strong in spite of its flaws. So it's pretty much a guilty pleasure for me. 7/10

+Kyle Sofia Nolan To be fair it was highly unlikely they could of topped Skyfall...it was the 50th anniversary after all, despite what you say it is one of the highest grossing bond films made thus far so it isn't nearly as much as a disappointment as you are saying. I do agree that it had its rough patches here and there and some of the worst cliches imaginable, but me and my friends loved it when we went to see it, there is no such thing as a bad bond film.

+JayCee I'm inclined to agree with you on how unlikely it could topped Skyfall. As a fan of Skyfall I think one would have to appreciate that once Sam Mendes set the bar high with one of highest grossing and most critically acclaimed bond film to date, the pressure is on to meet expectations and sometimes that can contribute to a directors downfall in a sequel. Take JJ Abrams Star Trek: Into Darkness for example, he was met with acclaim with his 2009 reboot (while having some backlash from hardcore Trekkies or Trekkers) only leading himself to create a film that is not as strong as its predecessor. The same could be said for Peter Jackson when he directed The Hobbit trilogy. The schedule and pressure was so intense that the result was not so withstanding. The point is that I think its best not to expect too much (we're all entitled to our opinions either cause film is subjective) from an anticipated follow up.

@@DunkIeosteus bird man has like 15 cuts by the end of the film. I would say the majority of it is “one” shot but bird man is a bad example because the ending does have obvious cutting. I think the first film to truly do it was Russian Ark, which was filmed completely in 3 takes (2 rehearsal I think). You also have Rope (1948) which was 9 takes (or setups in this case) that were edited together to make it seem like one (though it’s usually a simple fade to black by going behind a shirt or object). Then you have 1917, which seems like it is completely “one “ take. ( reason for quotation marks is it isn’t actually one take, but multiple takes that are seamlessly edited together to mimic a single take). But overall, they are all still fascinating in their own way.

The other two just make me want to throw up in the theater. (Seeing the first Hunger Games movie in IMAX was not a pleasurable experience, even though I enjoyed the movie as a whole. So much shaky-cam...) I saw Spectre at the Seattle Cinerama and by the time this shot was over, I had already gotten my money's worth. (But I went ahead and enjoyed the rest of the movie anyway.)

OK let me tell you how it was done. 0:06 to 1:26 - the longest shot. Single take with a crane, then a handheld. Old school stuff. Digitally morphs into the next shot by focusing on the sign. 1:26 to 2:21 - handheld shot, one extra goes in front of the camera to disguise the cut. 2:21 to 2:25 - cut disguised by rapid camera movement to the right and some digital morph. 2:25 to 3:02 - shot pans to the right and now cuts to a CGI shot at the edge of the wall. 3:02 to 3:48 - the "money" shot. Complex mix of CGI (the buildings Bond goes through), motion contoled shots in location (background), CG to enhance the background, Daniel Craig on bluescreen and some digital replacements of his body to hide some cuts of his bluescreen shots. Very complex. Morphs into bluescreen shot from the back. 3:48 to 4:04 - Daniel Craig in front of a bluescreen, gets down into position, camera focus on bluescreen. 4:04 - 4:10- Now we see the actual background for that bluescreen shot, partial location partial CGI, hidden by some fog.
@2thirty9
@2thirty9 5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to see where you get that from, to me there's 3 cuts, first shot is a steadycam op standing on a crane that continues the shot t'ill the sign, then another steady cam shot going with them in the elevator, cuts with the extra coming in front, in the hotel room, one shot steady cam again t'ill he goes out where they cut to a technocrane, and finish the rest in one shot. No blue screens, that's for certain. Possible slight CGI, but nothing like the craziness you're describing.

+Dufffaaa93 Ive been studying this scene so many times already. Trying to determine not only the cuts but the copy and paste, cloning, CGI and other photoshop wonders they've done for this scene

+rycka1983 Hey hommie, i was in the movie as an extra, the 1:25 cut was made with a green screen "door" with marks, the camera crane stoped a few seconds after the entrance, and replaced with the interior of "Gran Hotel de México" wich contains a beautiful roof and elevator. the second cut was made with simple masking out another croma.

That scene is amazing! I just found out that it was done in one take. When I saw the movie I was following the story, but when you realise it is the same camera for the whole scene. That's incredible!

I love how all the ambient music from the festival and band performing in the hotel stays in sync with the beat

Nobody is commenting on how seamless this was shot from the beginning. Outstanding Camera work and planning execution. Sometimes things are just so good that they are overlooked because they are invisible.

2:52-2:58 Great scene way it was done comical brilliant She gazes down to lay on the bed looking enchanting in the moment and poetically gazes up to see Bond’s with his suit on a gun strapp around his shoulder walking towards the window lol @ her facial reaction. Bond never came back & she would have never guessed how he made his exit that day from that city lol hands down great scene crafty shot. Her acting was brilliant as well

I just realised now why the scene is so compelling - It is one scene single scene with one camera. Genius.
