Superb display by Floyd. So fast yet elusive and able to deny Archie punching room by getting close in with both arms positioned defensively. Terrific combinations attacking both body/ribs and then the Head. Designed to confuse and unsettle and it worked. Great KO punch. Archie was clearly on unsteady legs when the Ref stopped it. Thanks for the post. After many years, I've now seen it :-)

@@Yobachi2007 I don't think Archie ever had dementia before he died. His longevity and health in later years probably come down to his excellent use of the cross guard. A lot of boxers used it to great effect after him, including George Foreman in his comeback.

Very good commentary from Rocky Marciano. I enjoyed his analysis and it was honest. Great leaping Left Hook from Floyd to end the fight. He even lifted Archie off his feet. He was still dazed when the Ref stopped it so it shows that he was probably concussed. Very capable and organised stance and posture by Floyd. A worthy winner and Champion.

Patterson was a world ranked contender from the age 19 to age 37. He was 25 years old when he had what was probably his best ever performance in the rematch against Ingemar Johansson. Moore was great but Patterson was a bad match-up for him, especially a hungry, motivated Patterson. On a better night Moore may have caught him but not on this night.

The Floyd Patterson of the Archie Moore fight deserves alot of greatness and skill. Floyd of 56 era against 65 Floyd against Ali would have been a fight look at Floyd he would have given Ali alot more trouble if it was the floyd that fought Archie Moore. I respect Floyd however he should have proven himself more against Foley, Cooper and Machen, Williams and seen his real talents proper. Even Willie Pastrano fight would have made him a greater champion than he was given. Go Floyd the best

Rocky gives Floyd his due in the commentary. Thoughtful remarks on Moore's strategy but real enthusiasm for young Patterson's skills. I've always thought Archie looked flat in this fight, though. Reflexes and punching were sharper vs. Marciano, and there was some talk wondering if this bout was on the level. No way to tell. But you can tell Floyd was a superb, small heavyweight, and even against moderate sized big guys, he could look impressive. But once you get up to the Liston-sized heavies, Floyd was a man without a country. Too bad Cruiserweight wasn't around.

Marciano was the commentator but it was Jimmy Breslin who wrote the commentary.Styles make fights.The only thing that could beat an old Archie Moore was speed, and Patterson had the fastest hands of all.Big strong punchers were made for a crafty fighter like Moore, look at how at his advanced age he beat Durelle. It's just that Marciano was SUPER strong. Now on the other hand Patterson was made for a a human boulder like Marciano. He was destroyed by Johansson in the first fight and almost lost to him in the third. But I loved all three.Moore was the master, Patterson proved his greatness in his later fights, look at how much more easily he destroyed Cooper than did Ali.And as for Marciano, well - Angelo Dundee said he would have destroyed Lennox Lewis. If McCall and Rahmann kayoed him with one punch, so could Marciano.

I agree. Marciano's opponents were permanently damaged after fighting him. Roland LaStarza needed surgery on both of his arms because of his crab defense. Archie, Ezzard Jersey Joe, Joe Louis, Don Cockell, Lee Savold were never the same after getting beaten by Marciano. Marciano was brutal in a way the fans don't understand today.
@Cableguy15

@@browntrout611 I'd take Archie and Louis out of there. Louis only came back because he had to and was already past his prime. Archie went on to box for more than another decade and only lost to some of the greats like Patterson and Ali. Add Vingo Carmine to the list, though. His career ended the very day he faced Rocky!
@browntrout611
@browntrout611 Жыл бұрын
@@Cableguy15 Archie's eight year record after the Marciano fight is questionable when you look closer at it. He fought two wrestlers who never boxed before, fighters with 50/50 records or 20 and 0 with no contenders on their resume. Archie's chin was shot for awhile after the Marciano damage as evidenced by how easily Patterson knocked him around. But chins of veteran fighters like Arch can improve with time and a little rest even though they're never quite the same as before. I see this in the UFC fighters like Stipe Miocic and George St. Pierre who took time off and came back pretty strong. So did Arch to a degree. He had a passion for boxing like nobody else.

This is weird like watching a skinnier version of Mike Tyson in black and white. Floyd Patterson also grew up in Brooklyn, both got arrested at a young age and were sent to boys schools and both started training w/ Cus D'Amato about the same age 13 & 14, both became youngest ever heavyweight champs. I think Tyson was a lot more aggressive, a little better head movement and defense, and a lot more power. Tyson seemed to have perfected D'Amato's style. Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas probably made a difference too. Tyson emulated Jack Dempsey's aggressiveness.

Marciano really really hurt Moore in their famous, and great bout. The knockdowns and the knockout Moore sustained that night probably ruined him for good -- at the very least they robbed him of speed, reflexes and also some endurance. The cumulative effect of concussions is now well-established. Here Patterson was young, fresh, powerful and fast, and he himself had yet to be knocked out. Moore should never have been licensed to fight Ali later on at his age and with his history of having been knocked out; and Patterson shouldn't have faced Ali either because he too was too damaged by that time by Liston and Johansson. It's a brutal and unforgiving 'sport' ...

Interesting. Most of the comments here are about the loser not the winner. All I'll add about "ageless Archie," is that in his memoires he said that he overtrained for Marciano and undertrained for Floyd. As for Floyd he'd have had a better legacy, had he defended his title against the dangerous contenders of the time, rather than the likes of Pete Rademacher and Brian London.

Ezio Trinacria he did say that. And I would agree. Floyd was a different kind of fast. He was good at ducking punches. But he didn't really throw good shots after the duck. Mike moved his head side to side, slipping the jab. But he didn't lose any stamina doing that. He would take a quick step to the side throw 2 shots to the body and a vicious upper cut to the head. Mike moved quicker, and had way faster hands and I don't think I even have to say that he hit waaaaay harder then Patterson. Mike truly mastered the peak a boo technic. Floyd did not
