Patterson was a clear winner here, despite Ellis putting on a good show. Two of my favourite boxers . Had Floyd got the decision he may well have suffered a similar fate had he met Joe Frazier, although I suspect he may have lasted longer and troubled Frazier. Sadly both Patterson and Ellis contracted dementia later in life. We watch boxing, and dont always appreciate what it does to good people.

Patterson was truly a great fighter. He's always been a bit underrated, but he is an absolute joy to watch in the ring. Constantly moving, boxing smart, and swarming when appropriate. He ran a clinic on Ellis. When Patterson threw his haymakers you can even see shades of Tyson in the way he "spring loaded" his shots. Incredible.

Talmadge33 I don’t think he was “underrated” I’m not sure what that means, but he was undersized. It’s too bad there wasn’t a cruiserweight division in his time, that’s where he should have fought.

Patterson was an excellent fighter. Would've been interesting to see a Marciano/Patterson fight. Similar in size. I think the rock would probably take it due to more power and better chin. The 2 fights against Liston tarnished Floyds rep, unfairly in my opinion. Liston could've beaten Godzilla at that stage of his career.

Several viewers of the video said Patterson won this fight and I remember one of my mother's friends, who was a big fight fan during the time, saying the same thing years later.. He said Floyd had fast hands and moved well ,but was small for a heavyweight. A few years later, when I began watching fights myself, I saw Ellis get beaten by Joe Frazier in a championship fight. It was one of the most brutal beatings I've ever seen ! Maybe that is why Floyd wasn't given the decision against Ellis, because Frazier and Ellis represented younger, marketable fighters and Floyd was not. In so many ways, yesteryear is really a mirror of what we see today!

The reason Patterson has an underrated legacy is because his two reigns weren't dominant. Same reason Sonny Liston has an underrated legacy. People are very bad at gauging everything boxers did outside of winning belts. The reality is Patterson looked sensational nearly until the very end of his career, despite being much more suited for light heavyweight. The only 2 boxers who truly got the better of him were Liston and Ali, one is a top 10 all-time heavyweight, the other may be the greatest boxer we'll ever see, both were significantly bigger than Patterson. I don't think I'd put him in the top 10 of heavyweight history, but he's close. And that's in a division full of great fighters over the years.

Did you know that he asked his trainer if he was winning in round 13 and his trainer told him he was "way ahead ,don't take any chances".He could have knocked him out.Two years later against Charlie Green his trainer told him he was losing so Floyd knocked him out in the 9th of a 10 rounder. His trainer later said he didn't want history to repeat itself but actually Floyd won almost every round in the Green fight.

It seems that Patrerson, indeed carried Ellis. It was a right cross in the 2nd round that did in Ellis' nose...Ellis is just too upright and stiff from the waist up, an easy target. Outside of a couple combos which staggered Ellis and also cut him in addition, Patterson literally took mercy on him as the bout wore on.

Years later, Valan had the nerve to come up to Floyd's table when him and his wife were having dinner at a hotel one night to tell them this. Angelo Dundee was no good. @@active.7universal Ali ,then Clay was younger and lighetr too when he was fighting Cooper. Even Ali himself once admitted that he would have get stopped earlier in first Frazier fight if it took place a few years ealier. He was not as quick, but much more durable after his come back in 1970. In early 1960's Bob Foster knocked Ali/young Clay down with a single left hook in sparring session too. Ali fought Cooper in 1963 which was only an year earlier from he was fighting Liston to win the title. Yet he was not in his prime then. People believe Ali's peak was in mid/late1960's, but I think he was better fighter in early 1970's. He was much more experienced and physically and mentally much more stronger/durable in early 1970's. Henry Cooper had many coins in his pocket when he weighed in for Clay fight to not give Clay extra confidence, but he was really like only 185pounds when he fought Clay/Ali. Ali couldn't physically bully Cooper like the way he did against Bob Foster who weighted 188 for Ali fight in 1972. There's no way Ali in mid 1960's could handle guys like George Foreman. He had lost speed, but he gained more tricks in his bag when he was older besides he was physically much more stronger.

Three Bad decisions in a row Quarry1 Quarry2 Ellis. It caused Floyd to 'retire' for 2 years. This fight has been haunting me for all these years. Floyd Should have been given the belt for the third time! Then he could have gotten a Liston rematch instead of Leotis Martin. Liston was ripe for the plucking and Floyd learned from the Chuvalo fight how to fight him. He could have given Quarry a shot but this time at MSG instead of Jerry's backyard. He could have fought Frazier in a unification fight. none of this happened because he was robbed -plain and simple. The ref was the ONLY judge. Refs should not even be judges, they are too busy and too close to the action. You need 3 judges in the first row unobstructed.

Yeah, it was in no way close. I have a lot of respect for Jimmy Ellis, but he would be my all time boxing hero if he walked up to the mike and said "Ain't no way I won that fight!" They're not going to take it back from him, it won't change what went on his record; but these "political" decisions will plague us all until the boxers, themselves, stand up for the sport. Like I said, they can't take your money, title or change your record so there's nothing to lose but less pride than it takes to stand their and pretend that you've won. Still, Frasier set things aright and Ellis was never again a contender. I have respect for Paterson and Ellis, I just respect Paterson more and that could have been very different, if Ellis (or anyone else for that matter) would stand up to these stupid decisions.

Because Dundee handled Ali, people often don't like to hear about the strange decisions and strange goings-on that took place when Dundee was handling one of the fighters. The decision here is just one example but there are many more. Just ask Chuvalo (Alongi, DeJohn) or Harold Johnson (Pastrano) or others about it. Further, one could just look at how Ali magically received the benefit of the doubt in at least 3 fights and the ring tactics he could get away with where others couldn't (although that part might not have been just about Dundee). The point is that there are ways to move the odds over to your fighter that are well outside the rules and Dundee was not above resorting to them. Certainly, Dundee was neither the first or last to use such methods and I am sure his fighters were glad for it but that doesn't mean he should not be called out for it.

The judges must have been thinking that it would be pointless giving Floyd the decision because had they given the decision to Floyd Patterson he would have lasted less than a year as champion or quit without making any defences which would have seemed pretty pointless in their eyes. Lets face it. Frazier and Ali were around and it would only have been a matter of time before one of them got him out of there and given him a really bad beating. The judges probably did Patterson a really big favour in not letting his health get worse than it did. It shouldn't be that way but unfortunately bad judging happens and it clearly happened here and it could have been with the view of thinking about Floyd's long term health and hoping that he'd take the hint that he's more or less finished and that it's time for him to retire.

Every damn time I revisit this fight I get angry over the decision! Now I will readily admit that Floyd Patterson was my boyhood hero. But putting that aside, Floyd took it to Jimmy Ellis. The "slip" as called by Harold Valan, was a legit, for real KNOCK DOWN! Patterson was the first 3-time World Heavyweight Champion, it was "STOLEN" by one of the worst decisions in boxing history! Gosh, Jimmy's face was swollen and disfigured from the pounding he had taken, yet this bid, deaf, and very dumb ref called it for Ellis! Enough criticism, I could not help but notice the high sportsmanship exhibited by both boxers. The chilvalry that I wish was present in boxing today.

Having only one judge is bad enough. Having that judge be the referee is worse. Refereeing is a hard job, especially with heavyweights. Judging a fight is a hard job. Having to do both jobs simultaneously is pretty much impossible. I can't blame the referee for the decision. His attention was divided.

Floyd won the fight period! It was close, but Patterson had the better. He broke the nose of Jimmy early and from that point seem to take control for the most part. He won, Ellis lost!

This referee did a fine job as just that, being a referee, but his judgement,... He hopefully was never allowed to score a fight again in his life. Anyone who was there, anyone watching this fight with any brains and powers of observation can clearly see who won, and it certainly was not Jimmy Ellis. This was a bad day for professional boxing. Regardless of whether the fight was any sort of legitimate contest to decide who was the holder of a part of the heavyweight championship, just as a strait up boxing match between two, well, by today's standards they would both be cruiser weights, but in any case, two fighters, again, it's obvious to anyone who's ever boxed, in my case only as a kid in silver and one golden glove match, that Patterson deserved the decision here.

Patterson won the fight but Ellis got the decision because there was a lot of clamor for a Frazier-Ellis fight and Frazier didn't enter the tournament saying"I'll beat the winner". There would have been no money and very little interest in a Frazier-Patterson fight. Given what Frazier did to Ellis, Floyd was probably lucky Ellis got that decision.
