The left hook that throws Louis out of the ring shows the amaizing streangth if this gient and how dangerous boxing is. But this film shows that Louis could "fight" as well as box. I meen in the next round he drops the technique and slugs it out. Why ? He had to get some "respect" from the big guy...Calm him down...get things back into the pace of a normal boxing match.

Baer had no business being in the ring with Louis. He never once made any attempt to slip or duck a punch. He never used his superior reach to keep Louis away with a jab. His only defense was to lean on Louis. I don't think any of Baer's punches had any steam after the 3d round.

Thing was, aside from his monster punch, Joe Louis was a very good boxer. You could take away his big punch somehow he would stil outobox you. He had the best form and technique of any of the greats. Look how relaxed and deadpan he is, the fluidity of his punches and body movements. He had a good defense with the gloves (catchig, picking. Parrying)head movement and of course footwork of a master boxer. He didn't waste steps like Ali who ran around wastng energy, Louis was economical. He didn't waste a step or a punch and he could knock you out cold with either hand. I believe he is not only the greatest heavyweight in history, but he is also a top p4p fighter and proved his p4p status taking on superheavies like Buddy and Simon😊 when he weighed only 200-205 in his prime.

Joe Louis was one of the all-time greats without question but in my opinion no one was as great a heavy weight boxer as Muhammad Ali in his prime (1964 - 1967). Anyone doubting this should see his 1967 fight with Cleveland Williams, possibly the greatest exhibition of pure boxing skill ever.

@@michaeltrumph121 the fact his prime was from 18-24 proves Joe Louis is greater. Joe Louis got results WELL AFTER HIS PRIME because he was the more skillful fighter, Tyson needed a late round KO for Holyfield, Lewis, Buster Douglas, Jack Blackburn passed away when Joe was fighting, that is a dumb excuse that directly shows the difference in quality between the two. Mike only knocking guys out early is a testament to what he lacked compared to Joe Louis, Bonecrusher showed holes in a prime mikes game by showing his inability to fight inside and work out of clinches. Joe Louis was more solid, more focused and more consistent than Iron Mike. Tyson fell apart because of his character, he was emotional fighter and couldn't hold it down p4p Schmeling was much greater than Buster Douglas. Joe Louis spent his best years serving in the worst war the world has ever known, Tyson spent it behind bars for rape, and he was already on the slide by your own admission 😂 Tyson

He hit this baer guy so many times and he still kept coming forward and Louis was knocked out of the ring but such an amateur boxer. Louis would not make the top 10 today and the only thing buddy baer has in common with guys like wlad Klitschko Anthony Joshua and the likes are size. Thats like me saying Ricky Hatton sucks because he lost to Pacquiao and Mayweather. You can argue all you want if Carnera is the worst or not. At the end of the day he was a good challenger for Louis and Louis made mince meat out of him. And he fought Louis usimg your "flawless gameplan" of simply using the jab. some not sane odd person said this to me, I've seen your videos on Deontay, as well as your ones on Wlad and the 70s-90s comparison. I find most of it disagreeable, mainly with how you describe the techniques being shown in their respective clips. I agree that Galento, Baer, Braddock, and Carnera were crude boxers, but they were also seen as crude for their own time. I also agree with Marciano's technique being vastly overrated. I disagree with your views on Louis the most. In fact, I think Louis looks great in most of the footage that you use to try and prove your point. In the 70s-90s video, you use Carnera footage to argue that Louis has stiff and sluggish movement, but Louis is moving beautifully in that footage. He's constantly circling with Carnera, moving in and out, feinting, using head movement, parrying, and slipping his jab, while peppering him at will with his own jabs. You argue that Louis looks unsure of himself, but I'd say he looks extremely confident and that Carnera is the only one looking terrified. Carnera has a decent jab but overall looks crude, but Louis looks like a modern boxer in that fight. It's the same case for the footage you use for the Baer fight. You argue that Louis looks sluggish, lacks upper and lower body movement, and can't effectively punch from range or punch while moving. I disagree; in fact, I think Louis pretty much does this in the examples you use. Louis is effortlessly jabbing and hooking from range and is doing it incredibly smoothly. He's using nuanced lateral movement and punching beautifully while doing it. He's dominating the crude Baer like any great boxer would. In your Deontay video, you use a terrified Schmeling getting bulldozed by a rushing Louis in a minute as an example of how Louis and Schmeling can't fight from range or manage distance. I don't think that's really fair; it's clear from the other fights that Louis knows how to use range, angles, and manage distance. I also don't think Louis looks horrible at all here; in fact, he's constantly feinting and anxious to parry that right hand, since you emphasize looking at their hands. They both do well at defending themselves on the inside at 1:18-1:25. Very tight guards. Schmeling cleverly blocks, then rolls Louis' punches at 0:54. I don't think this is the best exampleofr either of their technical brilliance, but I don't think they look bad either. It's important to note that Schmeling said that he was scaredsh*tlesss before the figh, and basically lost before the fightbegan,n like Spinks against Tyson. You also use a pastprime,e Louis and Conn, who had just fought 4 years in the war, from their 1946 fight as your example for why they're inefficient at range, mostly punch just when they stop, stand in front of their opponents waiting to be hit, and even in thiscase,e I still disagree with you. The past prime, basically shot Billy Conn effectively uses lateral movement and isn't predictable with it, parries and overall defends himselfwell,l and jabs from range well. I still think theydido all of these things much better in their first match, especially Conn. I also don't think a pastprime minister,e Ezzard Charles, who reportedly had symptoms of ALS as early as 1951, is the best example to use to define that era's techniques either. Same with the Moore and Dempsey clips. Dempsey,Charles,s and Moore didn't fight like that normally atall,l and when you watch their fights in fulllength,h that becomes clear. Dempsey displays crisp head movement and good technique in his fights with Brennan, Gibbons, and in his training footage with Bill Tate. He even displays good defenseand,d attimes,s technique in his past prime footage against Sharkey and Tunney. 4- yea- old Moore was cooking Marciano at range in the early rounds of their fight, and effectivelydefendingd himself while countering Rock.,Evennthen,n I find Moore's performances against Bivins and Davidson much more impressive. Charles looks modern in his fight against Lloyd Marshall. They're all much more skilled than Deontay. Can you watch my video of Deon/Foreman Louis Vid and tell me if you see anybody that fought Deon or himself or if anybody I showed Foreman fought or himself was less skilled or using the same obsolete tech as the guys I compared them to?

For his era I believe he was easily the best of all time that includes the narcissist Ali during his era....the Muslim of convenience. What is missing in any of the comments I read is the absolute beating Baer took. The fight today would have been stopped for certain. It was like watching a golfer tee off on defenseless balls. While boxing remains a savage and violent sport rules and regulations concerning the health and welfare of a man such as Baer have improved for the better.

Loved Baer's strategy after the 3rd round: Duck...keep your head down! The only thing keeping Baer up was Louis, as Baer desperately did his best to use Louis's body from falling down. I wonder if Louis ever gave these guys credit for taking so much punishment (being the gentleman he was, I'm sure he did). What was the ref doing at the end? waiting for Louis to kill Baer (amazing that he got up twice)

I just read n article online saying Baer was a better boxer than Wlad Klitschko and Deontay Wilder. Truth is, Baer is a terrible boxer. As ric ricland mentions below, Baer doesn't even know what a jab is, and for a guy 6'6" tall, that's inexcusable. He should be using his reach to keep Louis off of him, and instead he's walking right to him--all while holding his hands low and his head still.

@@yourroyalhighness7662 A lot of what Ali said about being the Greatest was for show. He admitted it to Jack Dempsey. In terms of PURE BOXING, I take Joe Louis over any heavyweight of any era. Ali, admitted that its styles more than anything. Like, he felt he might have trouble with Marciano. Its styles. Ali, was the Super Athelete. He might not have been the pure boxer, like Louis or have his power, so Ali relied on dancing, and his evasiveness in the 1960s. Later that changed. Early Ali could literally dance all fight. Til the very end if he had to. No one, that I have ever seen though, threw punches like Louis. There is something very unique in his punches. Perhaps, its the economy of motion. Its just something very unique.
