This video has nothing less than revolutionized my life! My QY100 finally came to life. In combination with my Keystep 37 and a powerbank, it’s a match made in heaven! CC messages from knobs makes all the difference: 1=Lfo, 7=Volume, 10=Pan, 71=Resonance, 72=Attack, 74=LP filter, 91=Reverb level, 93=Chorus level. So much better sounds and realtime mixes with this simple setup!

I've had a QY100 for many years now that someone had abandoned at a studio where I was recording in the early 2000s. I haven't touched it in ages because I've always found it to be a pain to program, but I've recently begun to incorporate more synth and "electronic" sounds into my music, and this video has inspired me to give it another chance. So it might be time to dust it off and re-learn all that I have forgotten about it.

Thanks for watching! Compared to bigger hardware solutions, the QY100 still is a gadget and you have to make a lot of compromises and workarounds to get the result you're looking for. But then again, sometimes that's the fun part, and often, a source of inspiration. Plus, I found, the QY100 wipes the floor with most modern gadgets feature-wise. New machines have better UI, but only a fraction of the QY100 song creation tools.

I'm sitting on about 200 clams trying to decide on a sequencer/rehearsal/comping tool. I'd been about to jump on a Circuit Tracks, but then I started seeing all these videos about these little Yamaha bricks. I'm most interested in the sequencing and drum sounds, mostly for trying out compositional ideas and building rehearsal/demo tracks for playing behind my guitar. The Tracks looks very user-friendly, but the QY seems to be the much more capable sequencer.

Amazing jam. Love seeing older gear paired up with modern stuff. I have a QY-70 and a PMA-5 (which I gave to my father to use as a sound module for playing keyboard) The QY still holds up to this day on its own (good for on the go music sketching) and then plug it into the other stuff in the studio and just go crazy

Thank you! Yes, I entirely agree. The QY's chord function as shown in this video really blew my mind (and I don't say that often). One thing about "synth jams" that always irked me was the lack of chord progressions. With a feature like this, it's absolute no problem to add some nice and meaningful chord changes _while building your sequences_ . I would like to see this feature in modern day sequencers.

Hello Floyd, very watchable video. I wonder if you can advise me on the QY100? I just bought a Novation Launchkey 49 MkIII ~ intending to start working with Ableton. (I'm 'oldschool' and had always previously worked with CoolEdit) However, I find that Ableton isnon-intuitive, and difficult to understand or get to grips with. (not to mention the irritation of uploading, downloading, registering, and installing all sorts of programs and interfaces ~ When I just want to make music. I managed to pick up a QY100 secondhand here in China, and so now I have the Launchkey, a QY100 and my laptop - and have a 'DAW' ~ Cakewalk which is still available as a free download and install ~ No updating, upgrading, subscribing necessary! My query is this: How can I, if it's possible (!), utilise my LaunchKey 49 as a controller for the QY100, and combine with / record into Cakewalk?

Hi, thanks for watching. Your Launchkey should have a MIDI out port. Connect that to the MIDI in port of the QY100. Then, watch my video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3vVlGaOa9iNi9E ;-) There's a list of "MIDI CCs" here so you can set up your Launchkey to send these: anotherproducer.com/online-tools-for-musicians/midi-cc-list/ - the CCs can be used for playback control, sound selection, sound modification and so on. The QY100 is an GM/XG controller. Connect it to you Computer using a USB to MIDI interface. Then use a control template for General MIDI devices in Ableton. You should be able to select all the Instruments and so on then.

Floyd- Thanks for the reply. Your video was excellent as usual, but still left me with questions. In the QY100 manual it states: “To use the variation effect settings in the SONG effect connec- tion and edit display, play a song consisting of only sequencer track (1...16) data. It’s sometimes useful to execute Expand Backing job on page 176 to “expand” pattern track data to the sequencer tracks.” Is this the key to applying Variation effects to individual tracks? I’m OK with the Reverb and Chorus functions, but the Vari remains a puzzle. Thanks again for your expertise and superb KZbin presentations…
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 8 ай бұрын
Ah ok, I think you're overestimating the QY100s technical prowess here ;-) The whole QY100 can only have 3 send effects active any given time: Reverb, Chorus/Delay and "Variation". You can then adjust the dry/wet ratio of these effects for each channel individually, but you can't assign an individual effect to each channel. The third effect is named "Variation" because it can be changed in the course of a song. The song editor has control data for this. You can also create some patterns each having it's own variation effect, and then line up your patterns to a song. Play back the song and the QY100 will switch between effects when another pattern is played. Hope this helps ;)

Thank you very much! Much appreciated. I've seen Jeremy's video, too. He's right in many ways but in some ways he's missing the point. There are a lot of people who make YT videos because it's fun. In the "real world", most people are not really interested in synths & keys. But on YT, you can get into a conversation with other people and even get an audience for your music. I think this is a big motivation for "synth tubing". And only after that, gear comes into play. I could write an entire video script on this topic, haha. Perhaps I should do ;-)

Hi. If your data is really important to you, you have two options to recover it (if the card doesn't work any more): 1.) Send it in to some experts who'll try to salvage it. This is not cheap. 2.) In the past, a program named RecoverIt by a company named Wondershare yielded the best results for me. They have a free trial that doesn't salvage anything but shows you what it could salvage so you can decide if you want to pay $60 to use it properly. There are other apps around that might help you, but I found their UIs extremely frustrating / you had to deal with cryptic command lines that were not documented properly.

If you're in pattern mode, you have to turn on midi out in the system, midi settings. By default, the QY will then send on channels 9-16, unless you manually change it to 1-8. (Your Nova presumably listens on channel 1).

Well, the most uncomplicated thing would be: 1) MIDI out on the 100 to MIDI in on the 300, make the 300 listen to MIDI control data, press record, then push play on the 100. ;-) Of course, that will transfer your song in realtime, so it's not the best option propably. Second option: Try to make the QY100 data filer run on your PC. @JayB has a copy of it on his homepage www.jaybmusic.net/tools.html

That's just the MIDI out channels. I did that for no particular reason, 1-8 would have worked as well. It's just that the QY100 does the same if you convert your patterns into MIDI data - the patterns will then occupy tracks 9-16 in your song while 1-8 will be free for you to use.

Amazing demo as always, Floyd! I really want to get into this world of synthesizers, but I have no background in music at all - there is a question that has been on my mind for ages, perhaps you can answer it: In order to be able to play a synthesizer, do I need to learn to play a piano? (sorry this might sound strange) or can I simply take out my Yamaha Reface DX out of the box and start messing around? I am a software programmer/engineer but have no clue about playing instruments. I DO want to be self-taught & I really want to be able to play and make music on Synthesizers. Thanks in advance!
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It helps to be able to play the piano (that is, you need to know how to play melodies and chords, and that's not that hard). Once you got that, you can start making ambient music ;-) - create some huge sounds and just hold the chords and try to play a melody on top. If you already own a Reface DX, just press the keys and maybe try some sounds from soundmondo. If you don't own a synth yet, I think the Roland JD-XI is a very good keyboard to start with: It's small, it has a sequencer, it's also a real synthesizer. The sequencer will play the music you recorded, and it can be a big help as you can play things slowly and let the sequencer replay them at higher speeds, also you can just step sequence (hold a button, play a note, done). Hi , I just wanted to jump in here and say this , I’m a Musician and I teach , I always say to my students “can you count to 4 “ when they say yes , I tell them the rest is easy , if you are struggling with piano keys , try aN MPC an Maschine or a novation circuit , with those devices you have the ability to set the scale and the key , so every note you hit will be the right one

@@mr_floydst Wow...that is the answer I've been looking for for ages! thanks so much Floyd, sorry for the late reply - I really appreciate it. I never even thought about starting off with ambient music, that sounds great and I personally love ambient tracks in general. Yes, I already own a Reface DX, it is still inside the box, I also have a pretty decent arranger keyboard (CASIO CT-X 5000). I am going to try this out & see how it goes. Cheers! ^ O ^

Does anyone know if the QY70 can sequence external gear too or is it just the QY100?

Yeah, I used to have a QY70 and used it with other gear as the main sequencer. I have an underused QY100 now but that will change!

Hello Floyd I have a problem I hope you can help me with. With the QY 100, it seems so that The Yes command button and a few notes aren't responding . Is there any way I can repair this myself , Or would i have to send it in for repair and if so is there an address that I can send it to ?

Hi, the first thing I'd try is cleaning the contact. Get a can of compressed air and try to clean them from the outside, if that doesn't help, open up the unit, lift up the rubber pad and clean the contact with q-tips and alcohol.

Thanks My QY is a close to top operation. The Yes command button and The board it makes contact with had a bit of a Shine that most of the board didn't. So with a q-tip and alcohol I went in and gently rubbed off some black residue also being light enough not to overdo the chemical that's there for it's purpose . Anyway so far so good. Wish I could send you some pictures I took !!! Thanks a million bruh. But eventually I will probably have to send My QY in for repair. Does Yamaha Lab have a address I can send the QY 100 to. I have to have It At it's Best form Or Is there a remote control one can use. That could take the stress Off of my device ?

Sequencing is kind of my Achilles heel, I keep buying them hoping this will be the one, and each has it's quirks or weird feature holes. e.g. the rm1x is almost the qy100, but I don't recall the scale feature, yet it has midi delay among other midi effects. I don't recall the scale feature on the rs7000 either. If yamaha would just combine these 3, they would make so much cash, omg ps the qy100 has 32 notes polyphony as a tone generator, but 64 total for external devices(as does the rm1x)

That would be a great device, but I don't think it would be viable to develop it - I think the problem is the real world need for such a device, compared to 2001, is relatively low. We've got smartphones, tablets and notebooks now - and most musicians will use these. So those tiny hardware desktop synths we see now cater to a relatively small group of hobby enthusiasts. (And that's why synth tubers seldom get past the 200.000 subscriber mark - the audience just isn't bigger)

@@mr_floydst squarp pyramid among others is one of the reasons I politely and with respect, disagree with you. :) The novation circuit sequencer is probably the best of the 'modern' ones for my workflow, I just wish it had longer patterns without the need to chain(something other modern sequencers do have; mpc, even the mc707 in a handicapped way). If I knew where to begin to learn to make the aforementioned hybrid, I would head in that direction right now. Do you think rasberry pi could handle the data flow if someone were to take the time to learn it and make it from scratch? We're talking just straight midi sequencing, patterns, polyrhythm, etc?
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 2 жыл бұрын
@@gossamyr yes, the pi can easily do that (I think someone _cough_ make some videos on javascript sequencing or a midi door using c++) ;-) mpc is a great box, I have one in my setup. This page helped me getting started: ccrma.stanford.edu/~craig/articles/linuxmidi

Hello Floyd! Nice tutorial about this vintage beast! I am considering buying one for my 4 Volcas (beats, kick, keys, bass) and I am wondering if you happen to know if I will be able to individually control (make patterns) for each of the voices of the Beats? These are individual midi channels as far as I can tell (based on this: i.korg.com/uploads/Support/USA_volcabeats_MIDI_Chart_E.pdf), but I have not seen any video so far where someone does this.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! That should work. Just daisy chain your Volcas by MIDI and assign each individual one to listen to it's own MIDI channel, and then just sequence on the QY using multiple channels. Maybe @volcaniced can help? ;-)
I swapped an MPC One for a QY70 ...
