I lived in Juneau from 2000-2009 and remember ROMEO dearly. Every time I went to the glacier, I hoped to see him, but I never did. The closest I got was hearing him howl on a cold and sunny (tho snowy), February day. I will treasure that, forever. RIP, dear black wolf and thank you for gracing us with your presence.

What a lonely sound. I was glad to hear that locals have made sure that Romeo is safe. Too many times I've watched or read about wolves being hunted in Alaska and the American southwest. Nature created wolves for a reason, that being balance. As long as there is enough food there is likely to be no reason a wolf would attack humans. As for Palan's allowing the hunt so that human hunters could have more Elk to shoot..I've always felt she was criminal for allowing it. Peace, love and hugs..thanks.

@Deblyla acually. it is true. because its very logical that romeo went to look for his dead mate. juliet was a love one with her wolf pup. the pup and vixen got ran over by a car. romeo was out looking for some food.then he tried looking for them. but never saw them. romeo did not know it happen. so he thought they were still alive. so romeo looked and looked for his loved one until he found her. the Reynard was brave and bold to look for juliet. and now romeo deserves to rest in peace with her.

According to one of the previous comments, someone was arrested. Which makes me VERY happy!! I don't know what his punishment was, but I hope it was more than just a slap on the wrist!! Wolves deserve to be free just like the rest of us!!

@TheWolfkilla1 i hope the case is solved; they are innocent until proven guilty. but at this point, according to investigators, it's too early to tell if it was romeo. apparently they were arrested for poaching 2 bears, and the black wolf skin was found incidentally during a search of a house. the state says there is no way to tell if it is romeo - but apparently OSU has his dna and testing could be done. we will see how the court case goes.
A remarkable wolf, just read Nick Jans book, "A Wolf Called Romeo" really stired deep emotions in me for the wolf, unfortunately there are deviants in all societies who destroy icons an Alaskan community held in high regard and they were further let down by a corrupt and weak legal system.

Romeo’s disappearance triggered a community response. Reward money was put up and missing posters were posted all over Juneau. Friends of Romeo began investigating and in May of 2010 an arrest was made: Park Myers of Juneau and Jeff Peacock of Lebanon, PA were charged with a number of hunting violations, including an illegal wolf kill. The wolf, while not confirmed as Romeo, was an adult male taken from the Mendenhall Lake region on September 22, 2009 - 4 days after Romeo went missing. And it was black. Photographs confiscated from Myers and Peacock show a lone black wolf confidently approaching vehicles in a parking lot, later the two men posed with the carcass of a black wolf, and an image of a Juneau Empire article entitled “Romeo, Where Art Thou?” DNA analysis of the wolf was never performed but Harry Robinson examined the photos and identified the wolf by a recognizable scar. “That is definitely Romeo,” he pronounced. The hunters were found guilty of numerous hunting violations and the penalties handed down were typical of those for first-time violators - fines of several thousand dollars, suspended six-month jail sentences, and loss of their hunting licences for three years. As much as he was loved by the Juneau community, Romeo was still just a wolf, with no special rights or status beyond those of the rest of his kind or even that of the bears that were also illegally taken by the convicted hunters.

@Deblyla they did not do any dna testing, so it's not 100% scientific. but they showed the skin at sentencing and everyone who saw it, was sure.

Our somewhat less informed and not well educated culture today , with little exception , will not be happy until it has "humanized " or killed every wild creature on earth and beyond .! Romeo is one fine example of the do-gooder mentality of wolf -huggers , and the lawless mentality of the radical "sportsman ", The wolf should have been relocated - early on to save him ! And the lawbreakers who killed him should be severly punished !
