Having spent 16 years in the navy, it's not the cat shots but the recoveries that always scared the hell out of me. One thing was drilled into my head, if you don't need to be on the flight deck, stay off it. Great video though.

Agreed, a miss or snap of a recovery will slice you in half. a catapult is pretty casual but looks cool as hell, especially when the pilot salutes and grabs that "oh shit handle".

Got a ride out to the Mid one morning in company with a USN CT and a package for delivery and installation aboard a Navy "boat". Can't talk much about that part of the mission but the ride out to the Mid in a C-1 Trader, the trapping aboard and subsequent launch to return home to the Japanese Air Base where we we stationed was MOST interesting. I've often wanted to go visit the Mid as I understand that she is now an afloat exhibit close to San Diego. I want to see if I can even remember the compartment where they stashed us while a rotor was being prepared to carry us out to the boat. Some day I may get there. My impression as an amateur recreational sailor of the ship --- DAMN!! These floating bird farms are HUGE !!!. My impression as a small acft pilot (Cessnas and Pipers) --- DAMN!! That runway is SHORT !!! Signed, A retired USAF Senior NCO Electronic Tech.

I spent 1 week on a tiger cruise on the USS John Stennis. I was able to watch the aircraft takeoff and land from the tower. My daughter served on the tower and I was able to access her work station. It was the most exciting experience of my life. I stood in the rain for hours watching these aircraft. Thank you US Navy for allowing families access into the lives of our children who serve.

What's the story behind the moniker "the sorry Sara". Had cardplaying buddies in 1977 that were CT's. Guy came into room ,bitched about getting orders for sea duty on her. 1980 in yards in Philly for overhaul. Saratoga was in for slep work. Berthing compart.ent had radioman bunks and 3rd class came down to get RMC and RM1 ,told them ship was closed down and everybody ordered off the Saratoga. Yardbirds had opened up a sealed void and found human remains. The third class said "Sorry sara" ,asked the rm1 what that meant,he looked at rmc who nodded his head. Rm1 said they let shipmates down when they could have helped them. Then said "I can't say anymore." Ever hear anything about that?

It's a different Navy. In the 80s approval for NAMs was delegated down to the CO in most cases, and they began handing out NAMs as end-of-tour awards (provided you didn't screw up). I'd always thought a NAM required something extraordinary, like "disregarding his own personal safety, Petty Officer Mayweather braved withering machinegun fire and ran across the burning deck, dislodged the fallen ladder, opened the compartment and led his trapped shipmates to safety." Evidently not.

I was thinking the same thing. Was on the Independence cv62 and rarely was anything given out except in extreme circumstances. But ship's company never got much compared to a squadron. We basically cut someone in two, blew up the LOX shop and burned up a whole berthing compartment in a few years. I don't think anyone got more than a CO's letter dealing with them.
