Spent a couple years on CV-43 USS Coral Sea, based out of FPO Alameda back in the 70's. Talk was already beaming about UAV's back then, but the tech didn't exist back then for comms. I'm a tech savvy and fan, but now at my age this technology could be better served in more humanitarian ways than militarily. Imagin remote rotorcraft that could be sent out on SAR missions as well as recovery of stranded hikers or water swept campers without incorporating a pilot and or co-pilot. The possibilities are endless as well as the FAA to find itself in in a nut squeeze when it has found that it has to push all all GA aviation PPL pilots aircraft as well as all the new 103 Ultralight and SPL holders to well above the 1500 feet AGL because they will soon find the need for another entirely new airspace for the UAV crowd weather that be the sport enthusiast or the commercial pizza delivery boy flying his route delivering pizzas or even UPS and DHL making house calls. Look how far UPS has come getting ready to deliver packages from a moving truck, it is amazing.

You may would want to know that the US Navy does not refer to the X 47B as a drone. It is an unmanned aircraft that operates autonomously. No one controls it like a normal drone. Takes off from aircraft carrier completed mission and returns and lands without any human interaction necessary.

Imagine the possibilities drones can do for logistics. Within the next 20 years I believe most if not all refueling and resupplying will be done with drones. No more giant slow moving aircraft tankers that are very vulnerable to enemy jet fighters to take on the risk. They can just have 6-8 tanker drones stay within 2-400 miles of the battle zone and our fighters taxi to them and get right back in the fight

Different drones. Only similar. This X-47B is the super expensive one. Takes off and lands on a carrier by itself, air refuels by itself. The Iranian captured one is the RQ- 170. It's a more basic remotely operated spy drone type operating from a landbase airfield. Much smaller than the Navy drone.
@harleyb.birdwhisperer
@harleyb.birdwhisperer 2 жыл бұрын
The drone itself is some metal, some plastic, some glass - all pretty cheap. The cost reflects the skills, precision, educations and capabilities to arrange those materials into a complex item. Loss of the item might present some damage due to a reverse-engineering opportunity for the enemy, but really, all the loss is metal, glass and plastic. Armament production is a jobs program for engineers and scientists. So is space exploration. But we produced all of them and have to keep them busy somehow.

The US military technology is far more advanced than everyone else's, by years. All this technology we have, makes it easier to do pretty much everything, faster, and more efficient. While saving so many lives of soldiers, that would of been out doing what ever it is, instead of a drone, or what ever. @@laaaliiiluuu Exactly. The GOP story is that we need a strong military. I think most can agree on this. Then the story proceeds to we are lagging further and further behind China and Russia. However, when you look at the numbers, we spend $200 billion per year on defense, which is multiple times more than the other two combined. So either it's a lie that we are lagging, or we are getting way less for our money than they are, per the example of this billion dollar drone. It's probably both.

@ What am I talking about? Are you living in a cave? lol You must not read or listen to the news? Listen to any republic politician or conservative journalist, the story most often revolves around how the US is lagging behind China and Russia when it comes to newer and better jets, bigger air-craft carriers, more hypersonic missiles, etc etc etc. This of course leads to the conversation what we need to increase defense spending or we'll be inadequately behind in the arms race.

I’ve always said this drones features could be made as a manned air-speed fighter that maneuvers beyond any fighter jets out there,with smaller weaponry drone capable within its belly controlled by via pilot gps or ships plus the size with fold up wings would allow almost triple the amount to fit inside ship’s hull...you could also reduce size of ammunition but with more power in each ammunition.

Ya ever think that the size of the vehicle yet such a small kg of warheads it can carry is a deliberate tactic by the manufacturers to encourage governments to purchase more...? The 1944 USNF Corsair could carry more ordinance.
@johnfake6031
@johnfake6031 2 жыл бұрын
First off, the F4U corsair could only carry about 4klbs of ordinance. This can carry 4.5klbs and it does so all internally with the cross section on radar about the size of a small bird maybe less. The F-18 could take off with the F4U strapped to it with enough left over to carry its ordinance.

I'm surprised there was not a single mention of Boeing's MQ-25 Stingray, which is in development currently and will eventually provide air-to-air refueling capability from aircraft carriers. The MQ-25 had its first flight in April 2019, but it's still in development and at least 1-2 years away from fielding.

I don't understand why this video included the Northrop Grumman's X-47B since that drone was cancelled and retired in favor of the Boeing's Manta ray tanker drone. Also I don't understand why the Navy made such a stupid decision given that the X-47B was a broadband stealthy recon and strike platform in favor of a much less advanced Manta Ray which is only a tanker with some mild stealthy characteristics. I guess that the new 6th gen platform that is being developed by the Navy, known as the F-XX will control drones in a loyal wing man configuration that will be much more advanced than the Manta ray..

The fight between X-47 and the MQ-25 was never really settled I thought. They squabbled over the two devices constantly but never really backed one I thought However the Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel for the CIA by USAF was impressive too
@ameritoast5174
@ameritoast5174 2 жыл бұрын
I think you already said it. The navys next gen fighter is also having a drone made to go with it. Most likely want a more stealthy and better fighter drone. If anything the X-47B was a technology demonstrator. Also I suspect that Boeings Manta Ray is cheaper so they can have more of them to go with their missions.
@vegass04
@vegass04 2 жыл бұрын
Well not really. The X-47B was a part of the Navy's UCLASS program whose goal was a stealthy strike drone capable of penetrating the most advanced air defense zones and take out high value targets. Unfortunately the whole UCLASS program was scrapped in favor of much less ambitious tanker drone program whose result was the Manta Ray. US Navy's fly boys were scared to see the USVs replacing them so they postponed the inevitable.. This decision also resulted in a missed decade in which the Chinese have developed their own flying wing type combat UAV, therefore overtaking the US Navy in that department. Let's hope the new F-XX program will rectify this and put us on the bleeding edge of naval aircradt/UAV technology.

Nothing much, it all depends how it’s spent. A billion dollars isn’t really that much now a days, when you calculate inflation, a billion dollars is more like 400 million. Also it depends where you would spend that billion. A billion wouldn’t change much in the US, however take that same billion to let’s say Haiti and instead of giving it to the government you started your own foundation to feed the hunger. And you tried controlling every step of the process from scratch. Buying your own farm, creating many different factories that supply your farm, growing your own feed for your animals. Having your own livestock farm and new companies that could meet the needs of all the animals and veggies, fruits, spices etc. Even controlling the packaging of all your food. A billion dollars could go a long way then and would start generating more money which in return you could reinvest to increase the productivity and output of your charity company. People would start working at your companies so you would help employ a lot of unemployed locals, to control this you would start your own Job hiring agency and send all new people to your new factory jobs you just built, to help support the new job agency you would take $1 - $3 an hour from every employee working for you. Create a new bank for all your workers, a place where they can cash their checks for a small fee, a place they can secure their money and earn interest, all free bank accounts for all employees who cash their check with us ;D Open food places at all my buildings that are being constructed to feed the workers fast and cheap and make them buy off of my place only(offer incentives) Had lots more but I think I already over did it xD
