I actually also fell down this rabbit hole as well like a few years ago A more in detail lore (from what I remember): So after the success of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, Hasbro decided to make the Ponies real. Due to Peta the creation of the Ponies was stopped early causing them to be developmently challenged and also caused them to escape. They then overpopulated and that's about it

You got the lore a bit wrong - fluffies are early prototypes, so Hasbio wasn't ready to release them yet. They were supposed to be like real life My Little Ponies. It's because of Peta, because they ambushed the Hasbio lab and released the early prototypes to the streets and the wild. The state of Ohio eventually got so overflooded with fluffies and their feces and corpses that they had to skip animal rights for them and announced them to be just biotoys, so people could treat them as pests and lawfully do anything they want to them (unless it's someone's property). And it's not all about fluffy abuse - there's also a hugbox section of this community, which involves love for those little critters :) And some people wish to have a fluffy in real life to simply have it as a regular pet, so there's that~ I'm a former member of this community and I miss those little shitrats ❤
