Exploring the semi-abandoned Flugplatz Werneuchen.
Built in 1935 as a Luftwaffe Training Facility by the Nazis, it was later expanded to include the "Erprobungsstelle Werneuchen" - a secret testing facility for experimental radar equipment.
Captured by the Soviets in 1945, it was taken over by the occupying Soviet Army who expanded the facilities to include a 2500m long concrete runway to accommodate its Tupolev Tu-4 long range bombers as well as MIG fighter jets, as well as a Granit-2 Bunker to store their nuclear weapons.
After German reunification and the collapse of the Soviet Union, they Russian army moved out of the Flugplatz Werneuchen in 1993.
The Flugplatz Werneuchen has been cleared for civilian air traffic use, though it sees less than 1000 take offs and landings per year (the majority of them, being light and ultra light aircraft).
